También se detalla la lactancia materna y artificial y cómo evolucionan las deposiciones, sin olvidar la higiene, los cuidados del cordón umbilical, la ropa, los paseos, la seguridad y la prevención de accidentes. Y algo que pocos padres conocen, los signos de alerta más fiables que de verdad pueden avisar de que algo no marcha bien, y consejos para conocer y prevenir la temida muerte súbita. En la segunda mitad se relatan los problemas, dudas o motivos de consulta más frecuentes como la presencia de gases, bocanadas, temblores, tos, mocos o incluso la ictericia. De la piel se explican las principales manchas o marcas, las dermatitis, las infecciones o las lesiones como posibles bultos, tumoraciones e incluso hernias. De la cabeza se comentan las deformidades del cráneo, su tamaño o los problemas en el pelo como la costra láctea o la calvicie. De los ojos se explican los ojos bizcos, las conjuntivitis o por qué a veces no dejan de lagrimear. A nivel digestivo se tratan las intolerancias y los estreñimientos. A nivel osteomuscular, las posibles lesiones de brazos, clavículas, caderas e incluso parálisis de nervios. En los genitales, las adherencias de los labios en las niñas y la fimosis y la ausencia de testículos en niños. Por último se explican cuadros como la fiebre, poco habitual en estos niños, o los llamados «soplos» en el corazón. Esta guía está realizada con información científica avalada por autores de prestigio y por las sociedades americana y española de pediatría, pero también basada en mi experiencia personal de quince años tratando con niños, en la que he aprendido que no todo viene en los libros y que, en la mayoría de las ocasiones, el miedo y la incertidumbre se solucionan con información, pura y simple información explicada de forma sencilla.
