La formulación de casos clínicos es una integración de la información recogida durante la evaluación del paciente y de los juicios que sobre ella se forma el terapeuta con el objetivo de elegir la mejor intervención posible. En esta obra se hace una presentación, paso a paso, de la formulación de casos clínicos, señalando qué variables evaluar y con qué o cómo hacerlo, cómo extraer inferencias, establecer juicios bien fundamentados y realizar su representación gráfica de forma útil con el objetivo de que tanto el clínico como el paciente logren comprender qué le sucede a este último, por qué le ocurre y qué habría que hacer para solucionar su problema y mejorar su calidad de vida. Esta representación gráfica, por ser altamente intuitiva y comprensible, puede contribuir a que el paciente vea con claridad lo que hay que hacer en terapia y por qué conviene hacerlo, favoreciéndose, por tanto, que aumente su motivación y su colaboración. Este manual no sólo ayudará al clínico a elegir el mejor tratamiento entre los posibles para su paciente, si no también a idear cómo aplicarlo. Aunque se expone con especial detenimiento la formulación de casos clínicos en terapia de conducta, no cabe duda de que también resultará de utilidad a los profesionales clínicos que siguen otras corrientes teóricas, ya que, en última instancia, en todas ellas lo que se pretende con la formulación clínica del caso es averiguar cuál es el mejor tratamiento que se puede emplear con cada paciente concreto y cómo conviene aplicarlo dadas sus circunstancias particulares.
