Sin embargo, en esta introducción queremos recalcar, en primer lugar, que adoptar un animal conlleva una gran responsabilidad. No se trata de asustar a nadie con esta contundente afirmación, sino de entender que ser dueño de una mascota implica, ante todo, entablar una relación con un ser vivo que merece nuestro respeto y cuidado. Al contrario de lo que parecen pensar algunas personas, un animal no es un juguete que podemos comprar para que nuestros niños se diviertan y desechar sin más cuando los pequeños se cansan de él o a nosotros se nos hace muy difícil u oneroso mantenerlo. O, al menos, no debería ser así de ninguna manera. Por ello a la hora de decidir la entrada de un animal en la casa, es necesario meditar acerca de algunas cuestiones que nos aclararán si realmente queremos una mascota y, en caso de que la respuesta sea afirmativa, qué tipo de animal queremos y podemos tener, ya que —como el lector podrá darse cuenta— no implica la misma inversión de tiempo ni de dinero, tener una tortuga que un gran danés. En principio, es fundamental que todos los miembros de la familia estén de acuerdo con la elección. El animal vivirá en la casa, participará de nuestra vida y establecerá un vínculo real y afectivo. Si hay en el hogar un animal que alguien rechaza (por ejemplo, un lagarto a quien alguien teme o un gato por el que un miembro de la familia experimenta antipatía o rechazo) todos se perjudican: la persona en cuestión que se siente a disgusto en su propia casa, el animal que, de una manera u otra, percibe el rechazo, y el mismo grupo familiar que sin duda sentirá el impacto de esa situación.
