This book was released on 2017-11 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from C. Julii Caesaris Commentarii De Bello Gallico Cams Justus Canaan, one of the most distinguished characters in Roman history, was the son of C. Julius Caesar and Aurelia a woman not unworthy of being ranked with Cornelia, the mother of the Gracchi - and was born on the 12th of Quintilis (july), in the year s. C. 100. He lost his father at the age of sixteen, but his mother was still living at the time of his victorious career in Gaul. By her his education was superintended with the utmost care; and the facility with which he comprehended the most dilfi cult subjects submitted to him, and the zeal he displayed in the acquisition of knowledge, produced a strong conviction that he Would one day exercise great influence on the aflairs of his country. Beyond this, little is known respecting his early youth, for the two biographies which we have of him by Plutarch and Sue tonina are unfortunately defective, the beginning being wanting in both.' Book Studies on the Text of Caesar s Bellum civile

Download or read book Studies on the Text of Caesar s Bellum civile written by Cynthia Damon and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2015-09-24 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studies on the Text of Caesar's Bellum civile is a companion volume to Damon's revised Oxford Classical Texts edition of Caesar's Bellum civile, his account of his civil war with Pompey. Comprising three parts, this volume investigates the detailed philological arguments that underpin the revised edition of the text. The first part supplements the preface of the Oxford Classical Texts edition, providing an expanded background on the history of the text and a more detailed argument for the shape of the stemma. The second part is a discussion of nature and the causes of the difficulties present in the text of the Bellum civile and their consequences for the revised edition. The third part presents a series of around 75 notes on different areas of the text, exploring in depth the contentions behind the various remedies suggested in the critical apparatus of the Oxford Classical Texts edition.

Book Classical Scholarship and Its History

Download or read book Classical Scholarship and Its History written by Stephen Harrison and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2021-04-06 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is unusual for a single scholar practically to reorient an entire sub-field of study, but this is what Chris Stray has done for the history of UK classical scholarship. His remarkable combination of interests in the sociology of scholars and scholarship, in the history of the book and of publishing, and (especially) in the detailed intellectual contextualisation of classical scholarship as a form of classical reception has fundamentally changed the way the history of British classics and its study is viewed. A generation ago the history of classical scholarship still consisted largely of accounts of particular scholars and groups of scholars written by other scholars from a broadly biographical and ‘heroic individual’ perspective. In these works scholars often sought to find their own place in the great tradition, choosing to praise or blame those whose work they admired or deprecated, and to identify with particular schools or trends, and there were few attempts to provide a broader and less prosopographical perspective. Almost all the chapters in the volume originated as papers at a conference in honour of the honorand, and have been improved both by discussion there and by the rigorous peer-review process conducted by the two experienced editors. It covers various aspects of classical reception, with a particular focus on the history of scholars, their institutions, and their writings; the main focus is on the UK, but there are also substantial engagements with continental Europe and (especially) the USA; the period covered runs from the Renaissance to the present. The cast contains a number of world-famous names. Unusually, the volume also contains an essay by the honorand, but we are very keen to include this, especially as it focusses on the topic of scholarly collaboration.
