Book C J Beschi SJ Veeramamunivar A Missionary Tamil Scholar and Theologian

Download or read book C J Beschi SJ Veeramamunivar A Missionary Tamil Scholar and Theologian written by William M. Lourduraj and published by Indian Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge. This book was released on 2021 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research work enumerates the contributions made to Christianity in Tamilnadu, India, by C.J. Beschi (1680-1747), popularly known as Veeramamunivar, an illustrious Jesuit of the Madurai mission. This work attempts to portray Beschis contribution as an itinerant missionary, as a man of literary works and as a theologian. This book presents Beschi as a tireless missionary among the subalterns and as one of the key founders of Christianity in Tamilnadu. It highlights Beschis acquired proficiency in Tamil language leading him to become one of the pioneers of Tamil theology; He expresses the Christian faith effectively and creatively drawing inspirations from Tamil literary sources. Thus, he reaches out to both the literates and illiterates. Till now we do not have any book on Beschis theological contributions rooted in the cultural and religious traditions. This book would certainly be an inspiration to all Christians to fulfil their call to evangelize and to rediscover the efficacy of Christian mission.

Book Linguistics and the Teacher

Download or read book Linguistics and the Teacher written by Ronald Carter and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Linguistics and the Teacher is a collection of essays by linguists on different aspects of the relationship between linguistics and education. All the contributors are united in their belief that linguistics should be a central element in the education of teachers, and argue for principled and systematic analysis in the study of the role of language in learning. The essays range from theoretical accounts of the nature of language study in teacher education to practical examples of how linguistics can help the teacher in such diverse contexts as the assessment of difficulty in textbooks, the teaching of literature, and analysing children's writing. The book offers models for analysis, specific syllabus and course proposals, and, in a key essay, discussion of those areas relevant to language and learning upon which most linguists would agree. The collection as a whole presents teachers with all the materials they need to make informed judgements about what has hitherto been regarded as a difficult area.

Book Caste Class and Catholicism in India 1789 1914

Download or read book Caste Class and Catholicism in India 1789 1914 written by Kenneth Ballhatchet and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-12-16 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a study of the ways in which changing social expectations among Indian Catholics confronted the Roman Church with new questions, as well as giving fresh urgency to the old problem of the persistence of caste among Christians. Low-caste restiveness prompted different reactions among European missionaries and high-caste Indian priests, and the socio-economic significance of religious conversion became a problem that reached the level of the Apostolic Delegate, and eventually of the Pope. The English brought their social attitudes to India, where they became racial attitudes while retaining their triple functions of supporting authority structures, protecting vested interests and providing psychological reinforcement, Roman Catholic missionaries came from different European countries and brought with them different national attitudes to social mores. A major question asked in this book is how far such national differences were reflected in attitudes to caste, class and sexual behaviour, how similar were the attitudes of Indian Christians, and how far the functions of such attitudes remained constant.

Book Passions of the Tongue

Download or read book Passions of the Tongue written by Sumathi Ramaswamy and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2023-09-01 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why would love for their language lead several men in southern India to burn themselves alive in its name? Passions of the Tongue analyzes the discourses of love, labor, and life that transformed Tamil into an object of such passionate attachment, producing in the process one of modern India's most intense movements for linguistic revival and separatism. Sumathi Ramaswamy suggests that these discourses cannot be contained within a singular metanarrative of linguistic nationalism and instead proposes a new analytic, "language devotion." She uses this concept to track the many ways in which Tamil was imagined by its speakers and connects these multiple imaginings to their experience of colonial and post-colonial modernity. Focusing in particular on the transformation of the language into a goddess, mother, and maiden, Ramaswamy explores the pious, filial, and erotic aspects of Tamil devotion. She considers why, as its speakers sought political and social empowerment, metaphors of motherhood eventually came to dominate representations of the language.
