Download or read book Barons of Banking written by Bakhtiar Dadabhoy and published by Random House India. This book was released on 2013-09-18 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Barons of Banking highlights the contributions of six distinguished personalities from the world of banking—Sir Sorabji Pochkhanawala, Sir Purshotamdas Thakurdas, Sir Chintaman D. Deshmukh, A.D. Shroff, H.T. Parekh, and R.K. Talwar—who not only played a pioneering role in the growth of the institutions which they founded, or were actively associated with, but left an indelible mark on the banking industry as a whole. Through the narration of the history of five key institutions - the Central Bank of India; the Reserve Bank of India; the State Bank of India; the Industrial Credit and Investment Corporation of India Ltd; and the Housing Development and Finance Corporation Ltd—the author gives us a keen insight into the contributions of these luminaries to banking in India. Also included is a narration of the recommendations of important committees and commissions which influenced the course of Indian banking. Divided into four parts, the book uses hitherto unused archival material recently put in the public domain by the RBI. Of particular interest is a discussion of the acrimonious relationship between Sir James Grigg, the Finance Member of the Viceroy’s Executive Council and Sir Osborne Smith, the first Governor of the RBI, which throws fresh light on a spat which remains unprecedented not only in the bank’s history, but possibly in all of banking history. Meticulously researched and engagingly written, this book will be of interest to both the academic and general reader and, of course, to the professional banker interested in a selective peep into the history of his profession.

Download or read book The Postcolonial Moment in South and Southeast Asia written by Gyan Prakash and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2018-02-22 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By exploring themes of fragility, mobility and turmoil, anxieties and agency, and pedagogy, this book shows how colonialism shaped postcolonial projects in South and Southeast Asia including India, Pakistan, Burma, and Indonesia. Its chapters unearth the contingency and contention that accompanied the establishment of nation-states and their claim to be decolonized heirs. The book places key postcolonial moments - a struggle for citizenship, anxious constitution making, mass education and land reform - against the aftermath of the Second World War and within a global framework, relating them to the global transformation in political geography from empire to nation. The chapters analyse how futures and ideals envisioned by anticolonial activists were made reality, whilst others were discarded. Drawing on the expertise of eminent contributors, The Postcolonial Moment in South and Southeast Asia represents the most ground-breaking research on the region.
Download or read book Lost Glory written by Sumit K Majumdar and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-07-05 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lost Glory: India's Capitalism Story deconstructs India's industrialization story, challenging contemporary ideas about her economy. Based on careful and detailed empirical analyses of India's industrialization, for a period of almost seven decades, the book provides deeply-nuanced depictions of the history of political economy, that have affected India's industrialization over the course of a century. These dimensions of India's economic history have never before been collated and presented. The presentation takes readers on a definitive evidence-based survey of India's industrial landscape. It includes a detailed historical description of the intellectual origins of India's modern industrialization, anchored in a privileged view of economic policy making. Grounded in deep historical and political analyses, that account for the variations, continuities, and changes in institutional contingencies, the facts derived on India's long-term economic performance are used to put the record straight. The findings of the book will transform debate, and set the agenda for thoughtfully assessing what course the Indian economy needs to follow.
Download or read book Capturing Institutional Change written by Himanshu Jha and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-09-10 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Institutions are norms that undergird organizations and are reflected in laws and practices. Over time, institutions take root and persist as they are path dependent and thus change resistant. Therefore, it is puzzling when institutions change. One such puzzle has been the enactment of the Right to Information (RTI) Act in India in 2005, which brought about institutional change by transforming the 'information regime'. Why did the government upend the norm of secrecy, which had historically been entrenched within the Indian State? This book uses archival material, internal government documents, and interviews to understand the why and how of institutional change. It demonstrates that the institutional change resulted from 'ideas' emerging gradually and incrementally, leading to a 'tipping point'. About the IDSA Series: This series interrogates the interplay between globalization, the state, and social forces in the making and un-making of institutions in South Asia. Why do institutions persist and change? Do we need to transcend materialism and dwell in ideas and culture as well to understand why institutions perform and fail? The first book in the Institutions and Development in South Asia series, this volume studies the historical institutionalism in the information regime in India by presenting an alternative narrative about the evolution of the RTI Act.
