Book excerpt: This book contains c. 670 illustrations in full colour, most of which are published here for the first time. They mainly come from 36 churches from Mylopotamos province, examined in this publication. After a short description of the architecture, the author investigates the iconographic programme, iconography, style and date of every church. A ground plan with the layout of the paintings recorded on it and a list of subjects decorating almost every church are included. A chapter of conclusions summarises the iconographic programme and the iconography of the various scenes and saints of the entire province. Special attention is always paid to the particularities appearing in every part of this study. The wall paintings of the Amari province greatly contribute to our knowledge of Byzantine art, not only with rare and singular subjects but also with the artistic quality of the paintings, which occasionally can be compared to that seen in Constantinople and other great artistic centres of Byzantium.

Book Cross Cultural Interaction Between Byzantium and the West 1204 1669

Download or read book Cross Cultural Interaction Between Byzantium and the West 1204 1669 written by Angeliki Lymberopoulou and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-03-29 with total page 591 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The early modern Mediterranean was an area where many different rich cultural traditions came in contact with each other, and were often forced to co-exist, frequently learning to reap the benefits of co-operation. Orthodox, Roman Catholics, Muslims, Jews, and their interactions all contributed significantly to the cultural development of modern Europe. The aim of this volume is to address, explore, re-examine and re-interpret one specific aspect of this cross-cultural interaction in the Mediterranean – that between the Byzantine East and the (mainly Italian) West. The investigation of this interaction has become increasingly popular in the past few decades, not least due to the relevance it has for cultural exchanges in our present-day society. The starting point is provided by the fall of Constantinople to the troops of the Fourth Crusade in 1204. In the aftermath of the fall, a number of Byzantine territories came under prolonged Latin occupation, an occupation that forced Greeks and Latins to adapt their life socially and religiously to the new status quo. Venetian Crete developed one of the most fertile ‘bi-cultural’ societies, which evolved over 458 years. Its fall to the Ottoman Turks in 1669 marked the end of an era and was hence chosen as the end point for the conference. By sampling case studies from the most representative areas where this interaction took place, the volume highlights the process as well as the significance of its cultural development.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The imagery of Hell, the Christian account of the permanent destinations of the human soul after death, has fascinated people over the centuries since the emergence of the Christian faith. These landmark volumes provide the first large-scale investigation of this imagery found across the Byzantine and post-Byzantine world. Particular emphasis is placed on images from churches across Venetian Crete, which are comprehensively collected and published for the first time. Crete was at the centre of artistic production in the late Byzantine world and beyond and its imagery was highly influential on traditions in other regions. The Cretan examples accompany rich comparative material from the wider Mediterranean – Cappadocia, Macedonia, the Peloponnese and Cyprus. The large amount of data presented in this publication highlight Hell's emergence in monumental painting not as a concrete array of images, but as a diversified mirroring of social perceptions of sin.

Book Byzantine Wall paintings

Download or read book Byzantine Wall paintings written by Myrtalē Acheimastou-Potamianou and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With their simple, accessible materials, the precise, effective flexibility of the painter's brush, and the efficient, frequently inspired artistry of their creators, Byzantine wall-paintings are a vigorous yet modest expression of the monumental painting of Byzantium, a worthy equivalent of the precious mosaics. Their easily executed, albeit demanding, technique, the immediacy and charm of their style, and the instructive potential of the representations (vehicles of the fervent faith and the doctrines of Orthodoxy), combined with their low cost, were all factors contributing to the widespread dissemination of wall-paintings throughout the entire chronological and geographical extent of the Byzantine Empire and the countries under its religious and cultural influence. In the populous cities and major monastic centres of Byzantium, eloquent, dignified religious paintings inundate the walls of both small, insignificant houses of prayer and renowned churches, adding equal prestige to their donors: important state officials, high-ranking members of the Church hierarchy, and humble believers alike. A representative sample of outstanding wall-paintings from forty-one celebrated monuments is presented in the volume 'Byzantine Wall-Paintings'. This treasury of visual artistic material covers, historically and stylistically, the development of the art of wall-painting from the 7th to the 16th century inclusive, which is fully documented, and discussed with great sensitivity by the author in her introduction to the volume. The particular visual physiognomy and artistic contribution of every ensemble of wall-paintings included in this book can easily be appreciated by the reader with the aid of a full, readily comprehensible discussion of the artistic style and aesthetic value of each of the paintings, together with a brief account of the monument it adorns.
