Book excerpt: “An electric page-turner that reads like a thriller.” — MOLLIE HEMINGWAY “No prominent journalist covered the story as completely as Byron York. Obsession . . . is a definitive history and a cautionary tale.” – ANDREW C. McCARTHY From the moment Donald Trump was elected president—even before he was inaugurated—Democrats called for his impeachment. That call, starting on the margins of the party and the press, steadily grew until it became a deafening media and Democratic obsession. It culminated first in the Mueller report—which failed to find any evidence of criminal wrongdoing on the part of the president—and then in a failed impeachment. And yet, even now, the Democrats and their media allies insist that President Trump must be guilty of something. They still accuse him of being a Russian stooge and an obstructer of justice. They claim he was “not exonerated” by the Mueller report. But the truth, as veteran reporter Byron York makes clear—using his unequaled access to sources inside Congress and the White House—is that Democrats and the media were gripped by an anti-Trump hysteria that blinded them to reality. In a fast-moving story of real-life Washington intrigue, York reveals: Why Donald Trump—at first—resisted advice to fire FBI director James Comey The strategy behind the Trump defense team’s full cooperation with Mueller’s investigators—and how they felt betrayed by Mueller How the Mueller team knew very early in the investigation that there was no evidence of “Russian collusion” Why the Trump defense team began to suspect that Mueller was not really in charge of the special counsel investigation Why Nancy Pelosi gave up trying to restrain her impeachment-obsessed party Why Trump’s lawyers—certain of his innocence in the Mueller investigation—were even less worried about the Democrats' Ukraine investigation. Byron York takes you inside the deliberations of the president’s defense counsel, interviews congressional Republicans who were shocked at the extremism of their Democratic colleagues—and resolute in opposing them—and draws an unforgettable portrait of an administration under siege from an implacable—and obsessed—opposition party.

Following Byron's departure from England in 1816, the author accompanies the restless poet on his travels through Southern Europe, where he encounters fellow Romantic authors Percy Bysshe Shelley and his wife Mary. Later, he enlists for the Greek army in their war for independence against the Ottomans, during which he dies of a violent fever. Book excerpt: Lord Byron (1788-1824) was a poet and satirist, as famous in his time for his love affairs and questionable morals as he was for his poetry. Looking beyond the scandal, Byron leaves us a body of work that proved crucial to the development of English poetry and provides a fascinating counterpoint to other writings of the Romantic period. This guide to Byron’s sometimes daunting, often extraordinary work offers: an accessible introduction to the contexts and many interpretations of Byron’s texts, from publication to the present an introduction to key critical texts and perspectives on Byron’s life and work, situated in a broader critical history cross-references between sections of the guide, in order to suggest links between texts, contexts and criticism suggestions for further reading. Part of the Routledge Guides to Literature series, this volume is essential reading for all those beginning detailed study of Byron and seeking not only a guide to his works but also a way through the wealth of contextual and critical material that surrounds them.

Book Lord Byron at Harrow School

Download or read book Lord Byron at Harrow School written by Paul Elledge and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2003-04-01 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first book-length scholarly examination of the four critically formative years of Byron's public school experience, 1801-1805 How did Byron become "Byron"? In Lord Byron at Harrow School: Speaking Out, Talking Back, Acting Up, Bowing Out, Paul Elledge locates one origin of the poet's personae in the dramatic recitations young Byron performed at Harrow School. This is the first book-length scholarly examination of the four critically formative years of Byron's public school experience, 1801 to 1805, when Harrow enjoyed high subscription and fame under Dr. Joseph Drury, headmaster. Finding its genesis in the boy's intrepid appearance on three Speech Day programs, the book argues that Byron's early performances addressed anxieties, conflicts, rivalries, and ambitions that were instrumental in shaping the poet's character, career, and verse. Elledge carefully examines the historical and biographical contexts to Byron's Harrow performances, showing their relevance to Byron's physical and psychic landscapes at the time—his connections to his mother and half-sister, his headmasters and tutors, his Harrow intimates and rivals, his lameness, his London theatrical spectatorship. Byron's performances in the characters of King Latinus from the Aeneid, Zanga the Moor from Edward Young's The Revenge, and King Lear provide an opportunity to examine his early experiments with self-presentation: as Elledge argues, these performances are "auditions or trials of performative and autotherapeutic strategies, subsequently refined and polished in the mature verse." Throughout, Elledge reads the boy for the sake of reading the poet; he shows how young Byron's introduction to theatricality at Harrow School prepared him to make a confident and spectacular debut on Europe's cultural stage. "His selection of texts for declaiming—the discourse of two kings and a show-stealing, scene-chewing villain—participates in a larger pattern of deliberate self-fashioning that began at least as early as Byron's Harrow years and evolved into the elaborate mode and vogue of self-representation that partially, with his hefty patronage, helped to define the era. To discern his initial experiments with identity formation, to watch his auditions, his inaugural performances of "Byron"—in the provincial run, so to speak, before his London premiere—to track the emergence of these constructs from a confluence of wondrous adolescent energies is to understand anew why and how enduringly certain events and relationships wrote themselves into the text that Byron famously became."—from the Prologue
