Agata Luksza places special emphasis on the most engaged spectators, known as "theatremaniacs"--from what they wore, to what they bought, to what they ate. The theatre was one of the key areas where early fan cultures emerged, and theatremaniacs indulged in diverse fan practices in opposition to the forces reforming the theatre and its spectatorship.

Book Vasily Zhukovsky s Romanticism and the Emotional History of Russia

Download or read book Vasily Zhukovsky s Romanticism and the Emotional History of Russia written by Ilya Vinitsky and published by Northwestern University Press. This book was released on 2015-05-31 with total page 603 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first major study in English of Vasily Zhukovsky (1783–1852)—poet, translator of German romantic verse, and mentor of Pushkin—this book brings overdue attention to an important figure in Russian literary and cultural history. Vinitsky’s “psychological biography” argues that Zhukovsky very consciously set out to create for himself an emotional life reflecting his unique brand of romanticism, different from what we associate with Pushkin or poets such as Byron or Wordsworth. For Zhukovsky, ideal love was harmonious, built on a mystical foundation of spiritual kinship. Vinitsky shows how Zhukovksy played a pivotal role in the evolution of ideas central to Russia’s literary and cultural identity from the end of the eighteenth century into the decades following the Napoleonic Wars.

Download or read book Myself and My Aims written by Kurt Schwitters and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2021-03-10 with total page 589 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kurt Schwitters was a major protagonist in the histories of modern art and literature, whose response to the contradictions of modern life rivals that of Marcel Duchamp in its importance for artists working today. His celebrated Merz pictures—collaged and assembled from the scrap materials of popular culture and the debris of the studio, such as newspaper clippings, wood, cardboard, fabric, and paint—reflect a lifelong interest in collection, fragmentation, and abstraction, techniques he also applied to language and graphic design. As the first anthology in English of the critical and theoretical writings of this influential artist, Myself and My Aims makes the case for Schwitters as one of the most creative thinkers of his generation. Including material that has never before been published, this volume presents the full range of his prolific writing on the art and attitudes of his time, joining existing translations of his children’s stories, poetry, and fiction to give new readers unprecedented access to his literary imagination. With an accessible introduction by Megan R. Luke and elegant English translations by Timothy Grundy, this book will prove an exceptional resource for artists, scholars, and enthusiasts of his art.

Book excerpt: This book details my childhood, moving from Rockfort Kingston to St. Johns Road, Spanish town. Life was hard for my parents. I drop out of school and started learning welding with my father, I started doing things to make money, mainly construction. Life was rough, on the site wasn’t easy. I was exposed to hard core stuff like knives and gun violence, among other things. I learnt that life lesson, things spiralled and I went to prison. It was while in prison I learned it was a dark place which I will discuss in this book. I encounter the most ruthless criminals, rapist, robbers to murderers. I spoke to a lot of inmates daily who details things that they did. For instance, Wes man, who killed and ate his victim’s, a man by the name of John that killed his daughter, another man that assaulted and tortured his baby mother in most inhumane way , by inserting a piece of hot steel inside her. I learn about the Galas, the area, where the death penalty is carried out. I spoke with a girl called Andrea who was raped by her brother a police officer. I also speak with Selena, who used her menstrual to cook stew peas and gave it to an English man to control him and his money. These are some of the stories that inspired me to write Vision of Byron Needle.

  • Author : Dan Norder
  • Publisher : Inklings Press
  • Release : 2004-10
  • ISBN : 9780975912911
  • Pages : 112 pages

Download or read book Ripper Notes written by Dan Norder and published by Inklings Press. This book was released on 2004-10 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Ripper Notes: Madmen, Myths and Magic" is a collection of essays about the notorious Whitechapel serial killer Jack the Ripper and other topics that shed new light on the case. Jan Bondeson discusses "Serial Sadistic Stabbers" throughout history, including the interesting case of the London Monster, a man who stabbed women in London in the 18th century and who is in some ways a precursor to Jack the Ripper. Amanda Howard gives a short overview of serial killers who predate the Whitechapel murders of 1888. Wolf Vanderlinden follows with "The Supernatural Connection," a detailed study of the various psychics past and present who claimed to have otherworldly knowledge of the Ripper killings. Famed expert Paul Begg in "On The Matter of Milk" examines witness Mrs. Malcolm's testimony that she saw victim Mary Jane Kelly on the morning of her murder (after the time the doctors later told the police that Kelly must have already been killed) as she went to buy milk. Bernard Brown investigates the site of the murder of Jack the Ripper's first canonical victim, Mary Ann "Polly" Nichols, and uncovers a history of persecution of women in "The Witches of Whitechapel." Tom Wescott then explores a possible link between the Ripper murders, magic rituals desecrating Christian symbols, and the Lindbergh baby kidnapping tragedy. Dan Norder's "Connecting the Dots" explores the various theories that the Ripper crime scenes were chosen in advance in order to form a symbol, describing the various patterns that have been suggested and looking into the statistics to try to determine if they were a result of forethought or blind chance. Antonio Sironi then asks if the murder of the Elizabeth Stride, usually named by experts as the third victim, in Dutfield's Yard was a change in the Ripper's normal methodology. The essays are concluded with Roger Peterson's "Did Jack the Ripper Visit Leadville?" which chronicles an example of Ripper hysteria that reached all the way to a booming Colorado mining community in the United States not long after the Whitechapel murders. All of the articles are extensively illustrated with woodcuts, photos, diagrams and other illustrations. In addition, the back cover features a color map of the East End of London in the 19th century with the locations of the five generally accepted Jack the Ripper killings marked for easy reference. Ripper Notes is a nonfiction anthology series covering all aspects of the Jack the Ripper murder case.

Book The Future Revisited

Download or read book The Future Revisited written by Francoise Schiltz and published by Andrews UK Limited. This book was released on 2012-05-04 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Future Revisited examines Hollywood adaptations of Jules Verne stories and is an interdisciplinary study that offers a fresh perspective on film history, French literature, science fiction and America in the 1950s. It is a fascinating and authoritative account of how the stories of Jules Verne, a distinguished French novelist better known around the world as the father of science fiction and an accurate predictor of much of the twentieth century, found particular resonance with US filmmakers in the 1950s. Schiltz looks at four of the most popular films - Around the World in 80 Days, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, Journey to the Center of the Earth and Mysterious Island - and argues that there were many parallels between Verne's technological adventures and postwar America, with its themeparks, shopping malls, Levittowns and plethora of consumer goods. Just as nineteenth-century readers of Verne's books could experience travel from the comfort of their seats, viewers of these films could be swept away on an imaginary flight, a voyage in a submarine, or a trek to the earth’s core, all in spectacular widescreen and with ground-breaking special effects. Yet the pleasures offered were ambivalent: encounters with exotic places and cultures might have led the audience to question common assumptions such as gender roles; seeing futuristic domestic spaces could highlight the confusion of attitudes to private and public life in suburbia, and the films’ blending of nostalgia and progress might draw attention to society’s tug-of-war between innovation and conformity.
