Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bygone Surrey In issuing "Bygone Surrey" it is felt that an A apology is due for the unusually long space of time which has elapsed between the first announcement of the book and the appearance of the finished volume. The delay has arisen from a variety of causes, into which it is needless to enter; the editors, however, wish to explain that they are not in any way responsible for it. From the first the editors have received many acts of kind assistance and suggestions, for which they now desire to express their sincerest appreciation. The contributors, by their special and local antiquarian knowledge, have long been identified with the county, and thanks are particularly due to them for their various papers contained in this volume. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old West Surrey: Some Notes and Memories So many and so great have been the changes within the last half-century, that I have thought it desirable to note, while it may yet be done, what I can remember of the ways and lives and habitations of the older people of the working class of tire country I have lived in almost continuously ever since I was a very young child. It is the south-western corner of the county of Surrey; so near indeed to the actual corner, that the adjoining portions of Hampshire and Sussex come within a radius of a very few miles, and are considered as within the district. After all, geographical distinctions are purely arbitrary, and only really appreciable on the map, whore they show in different colours; whereas, in the real world, one steps without knowing it from Surrey into Hampshire on the dry heath-land, and out of Surrey into Sussex from one clay puddle into the next, without being aware in either case that the land is called by another name. The practical boundaries of our country that we commonly call West Surrey, without any reterence to parliamentary or other authorised divisions, are the long chalk line of the Hog's Back on the north, with its eastern prolongation beyond Guildford, and the Weald of Sussex to the south. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old Cottages and Farmhouses in Surrey Mr. Davie's experience in the other volumes of this series no doubt made my part lighter than it would otherwise have been. He found several of the buildings illustrated, and drew my atten tion to some of their details. Amongst others, my thanks are due to the Rev. Gerald S. Davies, of Godalming, and to Mr. Penfold, of Haslemere, for pointing out interesting examples. Mr. Penfold also kindly lent some of his photographic views, shown in the text, of cottages since disfigured by the hand of the restorer. Mr. George Jack and Mr. A. B. Hayward have supplied me with valuable matter regarding Great Tangley and the Guest House at Ling field respectively. My brother, Mr. A. Romney Green, of Hasle mere, has helped me throughout with criticism and counsel. My notes make no claim to originality of thought or research; the authority for statements of facts are the recognized text-books upon English domestic architecture, and are, as far as I am aware, duly acknowledged in the footnotes. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dariel: A Romance of Surrey Knowing that if I could cross that valley I should probably strike into a bridle-lane which would take me home at leisure, I turned my Old horse, much against his liking, into this dark and downhill course, away from the main road, which according to the wisdom of our forefathers followed the backbone of the ridge. Soon we began to descend steep places broken with slippery falls Of rock, while branches Of thicket and sapling trees Shook hands overhead, and shut out the sky. My horse, who had never been down on his knees, and knew perhaps by instinct the result Of that attitude in the eyes of men, was beginning to tremble exceedingly; and in fairness to him and myself as well, I jumped Off and led him. He looked at me grate fully, and followed without fear, though sometimes sliding with all four feet, and throwing back his head for balance. And perhaps he Observed, as soon as I did, that no horse had ever tried that descent, since the rains of winter washed it. When I was ready to think myself a fool, and wish both of us well out Of it, the sweetest and clearest note, that ever turned the air into melody and the dull world into poetry, came through the arching bowers Of spring, and made the crisp leaves tremulous. Then as a bud, with its point released, breaks into a fountain of flower, the silvery overture broke into a myriad petals Of sensitive song. Book The Surrey Hills Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Surrey Hills Classic Reprint written by F. E. Green and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-07 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Surrey Hills But before the Roman legions ever flashed their shields before the astonished vision of our Iberian ancestors, the North Downs were used as the road from the west of England to the sea-coast at Kent by the British tin merchants, who carried their ware from Cornwall to the port of Sandwich. It was this old track that the pilgrims used in doing penance at the shrine of Canterbury, which the Saxons and the Danes made use of when they fought their bloody battles on the Slopes of Botley and Tandridge Hills, and finally on the slopes of Leith Hill. This old track along the North Downs recalls the great name of England more than anything else in the whole of our British Empire. It is the England of Caesar, of Alfred the Great, of Saint Augustine, of Harold, of William the Conqueror, of Chaucer, of Jack Cade. It is the England of the great barons, who were in their own province stronger than kings. Blechingley, Reigate, Betch worth, Guildford, and Farnham became their castle homes. Book Old Kew Chiswick and Kensington Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old Kew, Chiswick and Kensington Vol. III of his History of Surrey From the book of Surrey Fines, edited by Mr. F. B. Lewis, and from the Calendar Of the Patent Rolls, I have been able to establish the separate existence Of the hamlet so far back as the fifteenth century; and if no earlier mention Of it is to be discovered in the Patent Rolls and Close Rolls, the presumption must be that Kew formed until then an unidentified part Of West Sheen and the Royal Manor of Richmond. In dealing with its later annals I have endeavoured to keep within the present parochial boundaries, but it has been no easy matter to separate Kew from the rest of the Manor. Book The Old Surrey Fox Hounds

Download or read book The Old Surrey Fox Hounds written by Humphrey R. Taylor and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-27 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Old Surrey Fox Hounds: A History of the Hunt, From Its Earliest Days to the Present Time The reasons which have induced me to collect sufficient material, and to compile it in the form of a History of the Old Surrey Fox Hounds, may be briefly stated. They are, in effect, that, so far as I am aware, no previous attempt has been made in this direction, and that - in consequence of the inevitable and rapid expansion of the Metropolis bringing about (together with other causes) changes inimical to foxhunting near London - the passing of the "Old Surrey," as at present constituted, can only be a matter of time. It would be infinitely to be regretted if the annals of a Hunt which has supplied so much sporting history should be allowed to lapse without an effort being made to preserve some record of its long career; and with an ambition to fill this vacancy the following chapters have been prepared, with a due sense of their shortcomings. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Holiday on the Road: An Artist's Wanderings in Kent, Sussex, and Surrey When the old stage-coaches ceased to run, and post-chaises became a thing of the past, road travel practically ended. Cheap and rapid transit has caused the present generation to make long journeys to see much badly instead of a little well, forgetful of the fact that it is not the distance traversed, but what is seen and appreciated, that forms the true delight of travel. Did not Humboldt say of a great wanderer who circumnavigated the globe, that 'he had journeyed further and seen less than any one he knew'? Book Surrey Archaeological Collections Vol 55

Download or read book Surrey Archaeological Collections Vol 55 written by S. S. Frere and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-11-10 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Surrey Archaeological Collections, Vol. 55: Relating to the History and Antiquities of the County One curious problem remains: Why was that sharp angle made just north of the Lime Works crest, involving a very steep little hill which could easily have been avoided by a north-eastward course past the Works? It is the oddest and most unpractical feature on the whole course of this well - planned road. N ow we know from the work on Stane Street at Ewell3 that the road was diverted there to a course half a mile eastward of the original London alignment in order to get at once upon the Chalk as a more convenient soil,4 and that it followed this subsidiary alignment right on to the Vicinity of Burford Bridge. If the London alignment had been continued it would have passed a little to the west of Bradley Farm and would thus have met the northward alignment from the Lime Works there. Is it possible, then, that this curious layout represents the southern end of the diversion begun at Ewell? It seems just a possibility though we shall never know it for certain. As soon as the importance of this discovery was recognized the Ordnance Survey was informed, and Mr. C. W. Phillips visited the site and reported: I think there can be no escape from the fact that this is the road Stane Street itself).
