Book excerpt: Excerpt from Curious Punishments of Bygone Days Equally with personal libel did all good citizens and all good Christians fiercely resent of word, not only of derision or satire, but even of dispassionate disapproval of either government or church. A tithe of the plain speaking criticism cheerfully endured in poli tics to-day would have provoked a civil war two centuries ago; while freedom of judgment or expression in religious matters was ever sharply silenced and punished in New England. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alice Morse Earle was a social historian of great note at the turn of the century, and many of her books have lived on as well-researched and well-written texts of everyday life in Colonial America. Curious Punishments of Bygone Days was published in 1896. It is a catalog of early American crimes and their penalties, with chapters on the pillories, stocks, the scarlet letter, the ducking stool, discipline of authors and books (egad!), and four other horrifying examples of ways in which those who transgressed the laws of Colonial America were made to pay for their sins.

Download or read book Old Time Punishments Classic Reprint written by William Andrews and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-03 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old-Time Punishments The cucking-stool in the early history of England must not be confounded with the duck ing-stool. They were two distinct machines. It appears, from a record in the Domesday Book, that as far back as the days of Edward the Confessor, any man or woman detected giving false measure in the city of Chester was fined four shillings; and for brewing bad ale, was placed in the cathedra stercofls. It was a degrading mode of chastisement, the culprits being seated in the chair at their own doors or in some public place. At Leicester, in 1467, the local authorities directed scolds to be punished by the Mayor on a cuck-stool before their own doors, and then carried to the four gates of the town. According to Borlase's Natural His tory of Cornwall, in that part of the country the cucking - stool was used as a seat of infamy. Book The Punishment of Children Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Punishment of Children Classic Reprint written by Felix Adler and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Punishment of Children Our business is to cure faults, and in order to accomplish this end the punishment should be meted out in due proportion to the fault. Instead of following this principle, the great majority of men when they punish are not like reasonable beings, selecting right means toward a true end, but like hot springs which boil over because they cannot contain themselves. We ought never to punish in anger. No one can trust himself when in that state; an angry man is always liable to overshoot the mark; we must wait until our angry feeling has had time to cool. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rationale of Punishment It has been said, that these additions, these changes, should hear some distinctive mark; but though this species of fidelity is desirable, it is impossible. It is only necessary to imagine what is the labour of finishing a first sketch, of com pleting unfinished and unreviewed manuscripts, sometimes consisting of fragments and simple notes, in order to comprehend, that it required a continued freedom, a species of imperceptible infu sion, if I may so speak, which it is scarcely possi ble for the individual himself to remember. This is, however, of no importance. It may be believed that the author has not found his ideas disfigured or falsified, since he has continued to entrust me with his papers. Download or read book Vacation Thoughts on Capital Punishments Classic Reprint written by Charles Phillips and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-25 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Vacation Thoughts on Capital Punishments IN proposing to expunge from our statute-book the punish ment of death, I am not unaware of the opposition to be encountered. The same opposition has however met every attempt to mitigate the cruel severity of our penal code, and in every instance it has been overcome. There never yet was an error which could plead prescription, that had not its worship pers; or a proposed correction of it, which did not fill them With alarm. But the errors have been slowly and effectually exposed, and yet the world has gone on as usual, and men have lived to smile at the phantoms which formerly peopled the pathway of reform. Our penal code especially has been humanized, and capital punishments have all but disappeared from its enactments. This has been attained, however, but by slow and painful progress, against a dogged opposition in both houses of parliament, and, strange to say, amid the outcries and lamentations and minatory predictions of the Wise and good.
