Book Echoes of Old Lancashire Classic Reprint

Download or read book Echoes of Old Lancashire Classic Reprint written by William E. An; Axon and published by . This book was released on 2015-09-27 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Echoes of Old Lancashire This volume is intended for those who find it pleasant, at times, to wander in the byways of topography and local literature. The development of Lancashire, especially in its relation to modern industrial life, has been told by more than one able historian, and all that is here attempted is to glean in the ample harvest fields. The bygone customs, forgotten worthies, outworn superstitions, historical episodes and travellers' tales here recorded, will, it is hoped, not be without interest. If some of the articles seem more modern than the title would strictly justify, it must be remembered that the changes in the condition of the County Palatine have been so rapid that many things have become obsolete in the life time of the existing generation. To several friends, and especially to the Rev. Dr. Casartelli and Mr. C. W. Sutton, thanks are due for various suggestions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lancashire IT has been said, by one not prone to indulge in superlatives, that there are not, perhaps, in the king dom, two mountains more thoroughly pleasing to the eye than the Lancashire fells of the Old Man and Wetherlam. The same writer, in another place, has ventured the Opinion that of all the monastic ruins in Great Britain there is none which combines extent and beauty of detail to a greater degree than Furness. It was a river scene close to the Lancashire border that Ruskin - noting the wonderful com bination in it of moorland, hill, and Sweet river, and English forest-foliage - described as one of the loveliest in England, and therefore in the world; and it was in Lancashire, we may remember, that Ruskin found his own beautiful home, of which he wrote himself, on the occasion of his first visit in 1871 I think it gives the finest View I know in Cumberland or Lancashire. This book was released on 2017-10-12 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Old Church and School Libraries of Lancashire Somewhat over one hundred and thirty of these circular letters were sent out, and I received answers from eighty eight incumbents, to all of whom I tender my thanks for the information afforded, even though in the great majority of cases the information was that no library either existed or had ever done so. Some few incum bents informed me personally that there were no libra ries in their parishes, but about forty did not think fit to reply to my circular, although in every case an envelope stamped and addressed was enclosed. In the case of some of these forty parishes I made further enquiries, but in the case of others it is not impossible that traces of a library may yet be found. All the Masters of Grammar Schools to whom I have applied have very courteously replied to my letters, and from many of them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Kid: With Other London and Lancashire Sketches All these sketches may claim to be true, for there is not an action recorded, hardly a phrase repeated, in any one of them which is not taken from life. Yet all are fiction, for the characters are not photographs but composite pictures with traits from more than one original in each. Old friends and fellow-workers will recognize familiar scenes and the echoes of old battles. I hope they will feel no inclination to charge me with having dealt hardly with old Mission friends now long dead, or with having set down aught in malice. My thanks are due to the Editor of the Manchester Guardian for permission to republish the sketches, which appeared in his columns. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes on the Churches of Lancashire He left home in the Summer of 1874 to visit some of the Suffolk churches: On his return to London, whilst walking along Bishopsgate Street, he was suddenly seized With an affection of the heart, and fell. He was carried into the house of a medical man, and revived for a few moments and spoke, and then quietly passed away, in his sixty-seventh year. He was thus engaged in what was to him the study and pleasure of his life up to the very last. Whilst however he was keen and enthusiastic in following this pursuit, he was an active magistrate, and punctually discharged his public duties, especially those of Chairman of the Board Of Guardians and of Lord Lieutenant of Flintshire, in which his estate, Hawarden Castle, was Situated. He was a humble-minded man, Of simple tastes, full Of kindness and thought for others. An Old parishioner said Of him Sir Stephen is as innocent as a lamb. The Editor of this volume had the privilege of meeting him several times, many years ago, at Middleton Rectory, Where he often stayed with Archdeacon durnford (now Bishop of Chichester). The impression he gave the writer of this preface was that of a typical English gentleman, very unassuming, highly cultured, and a most pleasant companion. Sir Stephen's altar tomb is in the chancel of Hawarden church. His only brother pre-deceased him; his eldestsister, the wife of the Right Hon. W. E. Gladstone, m.p., survives him, and inherits for life Hawarden Castle, which afterwards devolves on the Widow Of her eldest son, the property having passed to her grandson, a minor. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lancashire Nonconformity, or Sketches, Historical Descriptive, of the Congregational and Old Presbyterian Churches in the County: The Churches of the Blackburn District It is necessary to repeat what has been so often said, in one way or another, that this work does not seek to supersede (even if that were possible) Doctor Halley's Lancashire Nonconformity. The two works proceed along different lines, and will be found to be mutually helpful. Indeed, whilst Doctor Halley's book is not always accurate on minor points, I have been repeatedly laid under heavy obligations by my cultured pre decessor in this entertaining field of research. Download or read book A Discourse of the Warr in Lancashire Classic Reprint written by Edward Beamont and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-26 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Discourse of the Warr in Lancashire "History, in some of its most essential members, dies even as generation of men pass off the stage, and the men who were occupied in the busy scene become the victims of morality. If we could call up Cromwell from the dead, - Nay, if we could call up some one of the comparatively insignificant actors in the times of which we are treating, and were allowed the opportunity of proposing to him the proper questions - how many doubts would be cleared up, how many perplexing matters would be unraveled, and what a multitude of interesting anecdotes would be revealed to the eyes of posterity! But history comes like a beggarly gleaner in the field after death the great lord of the domain has gathered the crop into his mighty hand, and lodged it in his garner which no man can open." (Godwin's Commonwealth.) As Sir Thomas Trenchard was seated at dinner with his family at Wullich, his mansion in Dorsetshire, on the and November 1640, they were startled by seeing the sceptre drop from the hand of King Charless statue in the hall, and fall with a loud noise on the floor. Times of public commotion often cast dark shadows before them. There is a vague idea of some impending calamity, from which men create the portents they expect, and in this way the future precedes the present. Book Lancashire Registers III

Download or read book Lancashire Registers III written by J. P. Smith and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 478 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lancashire Registers III: Northern Part Following the practice adopted in Volumes XV and XVI, the book now issued consists of a number of registers from adjacent parishes grouped together for convenience of reference. These three volumes include fifteen registers, and with those of Robert Hall and Hornby given in Volume IV, cover practically the whole of the northern part of Lancashire down to the River Ribble, the only exceptions being Goosnargh, Fernyhalgh, and Alston Lane, which will probably be included in the next volume of Lancashire registers along with Preston. It is very unfortunate that the old mission of Ulverston, which represented all Lonsdale north of the sands, cannot produce any register older than the one now printed. Fr Thomas Daniel alias West, S.J., who was a well-known historian and genealogist, was in charge of this mission from 1767 to 1779, and it seems hardly credible that he did riot keep a register; but although every effort has been made to find one in various likely places, the search has so far proved fruitless. A similar attempt at Thurnham was more fortunate, and resulted in the finding of a burial register not previously known to be in existence. As the archdiocese of Liverpool contains some sixty old registers, all of which are now transcribed, whilst the diocese of Salford may yield about twenty more, some of which are also ready, and the total number printed is only twenty-one, it will be seen that there still remains much to be done for Lancashire alone. Subscribers in the County Palatine, however, cannot expect to have any more work done at the expense of the Society for some time; but as it is extremely desirable that these records should be preserved ere it is too late, it is to be hoped that when the present war is over, some effort may be made locally to collect funds for this purpose. It seems only right to add that the cost of printing to the Society has been appreciably lightened by the payment by Mr W. B. S. Smith of 55, being 50 promised by his father, the late Mr William Smith, and an addition of his own. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
