Book By Ways of Nature and Life Classic Reprint

Download or read book By Ways of Nature and Life Classic Reprint written by Clarence Deming and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-26 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from By-Ways of Nature and Life The chapters of this volume, having already appeared: over the initials of the author in the columns of the New York Evening Post, need no formal introduction to the readers of that journal. To other readers, who see these sketches now for the first time, it may be explained briefly that they have been penned in out-of-the-way places of nature and life, during trips on two continents, extending over three years of time and some eighty thousand miles of distance. Often composed during the hurry of travel or of transitory sojourn, they must crave the readers kindest indulgence for not a few errors of form and, it may be, some errors of fact. If, for the faults of the volume, any variety or freshness of its themes shall compensate, the writer's largest hopes will be abundantly fulfilled. Book Life in Nature Classic Reprint

Download or read book Life in Nature Classic Reprint written by James Hinton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-13 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life in Nature It is just in this way we feel when we are relue tant to admit evidence which tends to demonstrate an identity between the organic world (that is, of plants and animals) and the rest of nature. When argu ments of this kind are suspected of a tendency to banish life from the world and interfere with the Creator's prerogative, it is surely forgotten that those forces and laws to which the phenomena of Vitality are thus referred, are to be judged of by their fruits, and not to be pronounced beforehand incapable of bearing them. To assume that we know what those laws and forces are, and are capable of doing, is arbitrarily to limit our own capacities. If the organic and the inorganic worlds in nature are two presenta tions to us of one thing, how much more penetrating and worthy may our knowledge become of both, each being interpreted to us by the other! Book Observations Upon the Natural History of Epidemic Diarrhoea

Download or read book Observations Upon the Natural History of Epidemic Diarrhoea written by O. H. Peters and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Observations Upon the Natural History of Epidemic Diarrhoea The causative agencies from which springs the plentiful harvest of child mortality in large cities may be conceived as a felted mass of rootlets almost inextricably intertwined. Those of poverty, bad housing, bad feeding, and neglect, may be severally recognized, but the extent of their interrelations with actual respiratory and alimentary disease - those to which the greater part of the mortality is referred - can be traced only with difficulty. It is the object Of this work to aid ln the labour of cutting away the matrix and entangling fibres and to lay bare the hidden ramifications of at least one important causative agency - epidemic diarrhoea. This affection - if we accept provisionally the more novel and generally favoured conception. As to its nature - is revealed as something very like an ordinary infectious disease, and one which permeates all classes, while the excessive mortality it gathers round itself in urban centres must be regarded as something superadded, owing to the vicious circle it forms with those baneful conditions of slum life mentioned above. On the other hand, its peculiarly intimate association with the circum stances of domestic life, from the continual faecal pollution of the interior of the household by infants and others, tends to make it more so than other affections of the kind peculiarly a class disease, and an especial scourge of dirty neighbourhoods. Dirty towns may however be saved from excessive mortality by a high percentage of breast feeding. A notable point in the interesting comparison that can be drawn between diarrhoea and typhoid fever is that, in accordance with their peculiarly opposite age-incidence curves, the marked and habitual depositing of infectious excreta within the household in the former disease may make the question of water-closet versus conservancy pan a matter of far less importance than in the latter. Book The Way of Nature

Download or read book The Way of Nature written by Zhuangzi and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2019-07-02 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Way of Nature brings together all of Tsai's beguiling cartoon illustrations of the Zhuangzi, which takes its name from its author. The result is a uniquely accessible and entertaining adaptation of a pillar of classical Daoism, which has deeply influenced Chinese poetry, landscape painting, martial arts, and Chan (Zen) Buddhism. Irreverent and inspiring, The Way of Nature presents the memorable characters, fables, and thought experiments of Zhuangzi like no other edition, challenging readers to dig beneath conventional assumptions about self, society, and nature, and pointing to a more natural way of life. Through practical insights and far-reaching arguments, Zhuangzi shows why returning to the spontaneity of nature is the only sane response to a world of conflict."--Provided by publisher

Book The Origin and Nature of Life Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Origin and Nature of Life Classic Reprint written by Benjamin Moore and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Origin and Nature of Life Whether the human mind be dealing with the problems of some branch of natural science, or constructing systems of ethics, philosophy, or religion, it is equally essential to clothe its thoughts in language derived from those things in the material world which appeal to the human senses. The extent and accuracy of our knowledge of external phenomena increase all the time, and it is this increase of knowledge which makes all science progressive. True religion apart from dogma is the sublimed essence of the knowledge of the highest things in the world, and in itself is never opposed to natural science; but when there is error in men's conceptions of religion or of natural science, then there may for a time appear to be a conflict. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Nature and Origin of Life: In the Light of New Knowledge Living organism is a mass of matter acting wholly in the causal sequence, they must be reckoned with before they can be pronounced of no avail in the body's conduct. If life is supposed to be a transcendental entity entering into or transacting the chemical processes, causing them in the sense of using energy, then there is no evidence that such an entity exists. But if on the contrary life is supposed to be a transcendental entity that is associated with the body, and in some measure interacts with it and guides it without interference (and that is by no means inconceivable since recent physics has plunged the ultimate nature of matter.
