This book was released on 2017-11-28 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from By Trolley Through Eastern New England The publisher of this Guide has been before the pub lic so long that a word may be pardoned respecting his work. When, in 1896, the first Derrah's Guide was pub lished, it was a small book and its reception was doubtful. Since then it has grown year by year, until the present volume, with its maps and many illustrations, its complete ness in every detail and its full descriptive matter, may be said to reach high-water mark. The compiler has devoted years of study to the work, bringing the public and the street railways into more cordial relations, and the large editions of the Guide which are now called for annually are the best proof that the work has not been done invain. The publisher, having travelled from Boston to De troit, Mich., by trolley, studying the various lines, methods of operation and possibilities of business, is convinced that nowhere in the world is there a greater Opportunity for the street railways to increase pleasure travel, nor anywhere such an Opportunity for the trolley tourist to find such varying charms of landscape, historical spots and delight ful rides as here in the old Bay State. With a conscious pride in his work, he asks the continued patronage of the public, h0ping to better the Guide each year, although fully realizing that a large measure of the success of the Guide in the past has been due to the fact that it has given more than was promised. In the following pages the descriptive matter will enable the tourist to know what he is seeing as he is car ried through the cities or across country on the trolley. The illustrations have been selected with care from several thousands taken especially for this work, and it is believed will add much to the value of the Guide. This year, for the first time, a new departure has been made in the issu ing of a limited library edition in cloth, which contains not only the lines of Eastern, but of Western New Eng land as well. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Trolley Trips Through New England Here we get a fine view of Long Island Sound, and also first enter the Old Boston Post Road. Along this, perhaps the most characteristic of New England streets, galloped in Olden days the post, or rolled the stage-coach, from New York to the Hub. This fine old road, extending all along the shore, keeps throughout a note of peace and pleasant order. Its great days have returned. For under its quiet elms dash daily a thousand motor cars, while hordes of trolley tourists traverse it each week. Book Straphanging in the USA

Download or read book Straphanging in the USA written by Martin W. Sandler and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2003-09-04 with total page 65 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A riveting look at the evolution of transportation in American cities, Straphanging in America begins with an examination of the horsecar and omnibus, then traces the extraordinary impact of the cable car, elevated railway, interurban, and subway on city life -- and the nation. Capturing people's imaginations with its "magical" use of electricity, trolley cars made pollution-free, inexpensive, mass urban transportation possible and created suburbs. Interurbans connected cities, spawned new towns, and made overland travel a national pastime. Subways solved the problem of street congestion. Beyond the effects on landscape, urban transport unified cities as people of all economic backgrounds rubbed elbows. Vividly illustrating America's urban transformation, Straphanging in America captures the excitement of a nation and its burgeoning technology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Trolley Trips Through Southern New England: New York, Bridgeport, New Haven, Hartford, Springfield, Worcester, Boston If we wish to stop over at any point it is easy to do so, and the next car will carry us along on our journey. A great many people have found a trip, even as long as from New York to Boston, delightful and profitable, and the number of long-distance trolley travelers is increasing rapidly. The route of the trolley cars is, for a good part of the distance along the shore of Long Island Sound, either on or near the old Boston Post Road, and some reminders of Benjamin Franklin and his efforts in establishing good postal service in the Colonies are still to be seen, notably one of the old mile-stones set under his direction, which is still standing in Stratford and of which an illustration is given. But we are getting ahead of our story and must remem ber that New York is our starting point. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
