Book excerpt: By Native Hands describes the history and context of Native American basketry with full-color photographs and scholarly text. The objects are brought to life in words and pictures, including such rare objects as a feathered Pomo blazing sun basket that took three years to create. This book presents baskets from every major geographic region of North America, with examples from the Choctaw, Panamint Shoshone, Salish, Ojibwa, and many others. By the turn of the nineteenth century, Catherine Marshall Gardiner had begun to collect woven baskets from Native American cultures across the continent. Her collection, the first donation to the Lauren Rogers Museum of Art in 1923, is widely known as one of the finest and most representative Native American basketry collections. It now includes baskets from 88 tribes, almost all of the basket-making tribes in North America. The contributors include Stephen W. Cook, Betty J. Duggan, Dawn Glinsmann, William Ashley Harris, and Joyce Herold.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To learn about its territories in the New World, Spain commissioned a survey of Spanish officials in Mexico between 1578 and 1584, asking for local maps as well as descriptions of local resources, history, and geography. In The Mapping of New Spain, Barbara Mundy illuminates both the Amerindian (Aztec, Mixtec, and Zapotec) and the Spanish traditions represented in these maps and traces the reshaping of indigene world views in the wake of colonization. "Its contribution to its specific field is both significant and original. . . . It is a pure pleasure to read." —Sabine MacCormack, Isis "Mundy has done a fine job of balancing the artistic interpretation of the maps with the larger historical context within which they were drawn. . . . This is an important work." —John F. Schwaller, Sixteenth Century Journal "This beautiful book opens a Pandora's box in the most positive sense, for it provokes the reconsideration of several long-held opinions about Spanish colonialism and its effects on Native American culture." —Susan Schroeder, American Historical Review

Book Nationalism and African Intellectuals

Download or read book Nationalism and African Intellectuals written by Toyin Falola and published by University Rochester Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An examination of the attempt by Western-educated African intellectuals to create a 'better Africa' through connecting nationalism to knowledge, from the anti-colonial movement to the present-day. This book is about how African intellectuals, influenced primarily by nationalism, have addressed the inter-related issues of power, identity politics, self-assertion and autonomy for themselves and their continent, from the mid-nineteenth century onward. Their major goal was to create a 'better Africa' by connecting nationalism to knowledge. The results have been mixed, from the glorious euphoria of the success of anti-colonial movements to the depressingcircumstances of the African condition as we enter a new millennium. As the intellectual elite is a creation of the Western formal school system, the ideas it generated are also connected to the larger world of scholarship. This world is, in turn, shaped by European contacts with Africa from the fifteenth century onward, the politics of the Cold War, and the subsequent collapse of the Soviet Union. In essence, Africa and its elite cannot be fully understood without also considering the West and changing global politics. Neither can the academic and media contributions by non-Africans be ignored, as these also affect the ways that Africans think about themselves and their continent. Nationalism and African Intellectuals examines intellectuals' ambivalent relationships with the colonial apparatus and subsequent nation-state formations; the contradictions manifested within pan-Africanism and nationalism; and the relation of academic institutions and intellectual production to the state during the nationalism period and beyond. Toyin Falola is the Jacob and Frances Sanger Mossiker Chair in the Humanities and University Distinguished Teaching Professor at the University of Texas at Austin.

Book Giving Account of Faith and Hope in Africa

Download or read book Giving Account of Faith and Hope in Africa written by John Samuel Pobee and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2017-07-10 with total page 489 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is African theology? What are its distinctive traits and characteristics, modes of investigation, and style of expression? Can African theology reach wider and run deeper than simple propositional articulation? What concerns and special circumstances have shaped its outlook? What unique burdens or hurdles imposed by the past must African theology surmount? What challenges and opportunities lie before it? What are African theology's prospects? As a field of Christian engagement, is it condemned to be only an appendage to theology imported from the West and the North? Or does it have a distinctive contribution to make and gifts to share, not just within the continent of Africa, but also with the Christian world at large? These questions exercise the mind and soul of the African church. A worthy capstone to a lifetime of service as a theologian, educator, and ecumenical leader, this volume offers John Samuel Pobee's considered and mature reflections on issues he raised nearly forty years ago when he published Toward an African Theology.
