Who should dare To add one line or lesson unto these? And in this year of loss, this first blank year For us whom he held near and dear to him, The heart is far too full to speak of thee, Except through speaking of thy faithful ones, Joseph Mazzini, Master, first of those The Sons of Men who are the Sons of God! Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Spirit of a Disciple This chapter reveals more passion than any other address of Jesus. His feeling is so intense that it expresses itself in vituperation. He who charges his disciples to call no man fool, calls the Pharisees hypocrites, fools, blind, serpents, vipers, and the damned of hell. Such terms as these, in a calm nature like that of Jesus, signify unspeakable intensity of passion. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. BY AN UNKNOWN DISCIPLE MARK JOHN was only a boy then, and what he wrote down he learnt from Peter. Peter was there, but he was hauling up the boats, and didn't know what had happened until he heard the shouts and saw the swine break away and rush down the hillside into the sea. He never saw the madman until all the swine were dead. How, then, did he know enough to tell Mark John? Well, of course, he heard the others talk. And then that was Peter's way. He was always sure that he knew everything until he did some hot-tempered, silly action, and then he was sure that he knew nothing. He would belie DEGREES_eveiylhing_caiJio DEGREEShin DEGREES DEGREEScoj DEGREES DEGREESg_ to his tem er_tpwards_ the teller. He did not care for the labour of weighing facts to decide between false and true. You could never make Peter believe that even when people describe a thing as they think they saw it they may still speak falsehood. If a man told Peter that he had met a demon or a magician in the mountains Peter would be quite sure that it was a magician or a demon, unless the man who said he saw it was a Scribe or a Pharisee, and then Peter would say he was a liar. Always Peter hated the explanations given by others. He never wanted to ask how things had happened. He felt so strongly that he was sure he knew and that other more subtle explanations smelt of the Scribes. Later he grew into somewhat of a tyrant, but always he was lovable. Luke was not there. I do not know who told him. Yes, he was an educated man; but he was a physician, and he seldom saw beyond the things of the body. Witness the way he changed the Blessings. Peter never made such mistakes about DEGREES > the Message; to the end he loved the poor, but Luke wanted to keep them orderly

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Disciple Whom Jesus Loved: With Some Remarks on the Passages Where These Words Are Used Here, however, some one may ask whether, by using this title, he is not placing himself above the other disciples, as held in higher regard than the rest of the twelve. The answer which can fairly be made to this question is that while Jesus loved him with a special and tender love, it does not appear that this title was given him until after the resur rection; and indeed perhaps not until years after that event, and even When a number of the old apostles may have been called to be with Christ. The title, again, must have been affixed to him by others who had heard of the especial regard in which Jesus held him. If this gospel was the latest of the four in its publication, as can scarcely admit of a doubt, it might disclose recollections which at an earlier period would not per haps have been given to the world. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gospel of Jesus: Compiled by His Disciple Matthew, From His Own Memoranda, and Those of Peter, Luke, Mark, and John, and Lastly Revised by Peter Now, if these writings are forgeries, they must have been exe outed at a very early period. And, allowing the supposition, what could have induced their author, or others, to conceal them so carefully in the vaults of the Catacombs, where, by mere accident, the place of their concealment was discovered? But the idea of forgery is not admissible here. The writer who could put forth the sublime, beautiful, perfect, moral teachings found in this volume could not be guilty of a forgery. The man who uttered the sayings of this book must have been more than a Plato or a Socrates. He could have been no other than a Jesus, inspired from on high. It is a doctrine among the learned - not generally understood by common readers of the Bible - that our four Gospels were not written by the disciples Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, whose' names they bear, but by unknown persons, who professed to write according to them. Book John and His Writings Classic Reprint

Download or read book John and His Writings Classic Reprint written by D. A. Hayes and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-22 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from John and His Writings There is a disposition at the present time with a certain class of writers to emphasize the dependence of John upon Paul, and these writers try to make it appear that the author of the Johannine books was a disciple of Paul even more fully than he was a disciple of Jesus. We believe that John always was a receptive soul and that he probably learned much from Paul, as from every other strong per sonality with whom he came into contact, but the supreme influence in all his more mature life was that of the Master. For the most part he was one of the quiet in the land, and he stood nearest to the Master, and he saw deepest into the Master's spirit and truth, and he meditated longest upon these things, and in the end he formulated more fully than any other the essentials of the new faith; and as far as he went we believe that he has spoken the final word in this field. Paul was taught by the Spirit, but John had had the additional advantage of the three years of teaching by the Incarnate Lord. After Pentecost the Spirit of Jesus led him into all the truth. His personal experience and the history of the church taught him new significance and fresh result from many of his early memories of the Master's teaching and life. At last he was prepared to write the consummation of the New Testament revelation, the final residuum of the first century's experience in the origin and the development of Christian truth. After Peter had been crucified and Paul had been beheaded, John was left to carry on the work and to perfect the faith for an other entire generation in the church. What Jesus had taught in the first third of the century and what Peter and Paul had preached in the second third of the century John meditated upon through the last third of the century, and in this period he wrote the epistles, the Apocalypse, and the Gospel. They represent the highest reach of apostolic inspiration. This book will be perfect anathema in the eyes of those who are accustomed to treat the Johannine literature as anonymous or pseudonymous, and to regard the contents of these books as composed mainly of such stufl as dreams are made of. We believe that the church tradition is vera cious and trustworthy which assigns the authorship of the five Johannine books to the apostle John. We believe that the fourth Gospel is no romance, to be interpreted either allegorically or rationalistically. We believe in its historical trustworthiness, and we follow the apostle John as our supreme authority both as to fact and to faith. Download or read book The Fourth Gospel in Research and Debate written by Benjamin Wisner Bacon and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-25 with total page 558 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fourth Gospel in Research and Debate: A Series of Essays on Problems Concerning Cerning the Origin and Value of the Anonymous Writings to the Apostle John It is possible that Bishop Lightfoot, were he living to-day, might modify somewhat the terms by which he characterizes his Opponents. Those who antagonize - not the claim of this Gospel to be the work of John the son of Zebedee; for, Bishop Lightfoot to the contrary notwithstanding, the Gospel does not profess to have been written by him - but the theory traceable to about 170 A. D. Imputing its authorship to the beloved disciple, are still accustomed to being de scribed as rationalists and Unitarians, and by no means anticipate that the defenders of the Gospel will altogether refrain from the imputation of evil motives of which the example has been SO conspicuously set. In this no im mediate change is to be expected. But inasmuch as on the one Side a considerable and increasing number of scholars of Bishop Lightfoot's own evangelical type of belief are to-day joining the ranks of his Opponents on the Johannine ques tion, while on the other one of the most eminent and con spicuous defenders of the genuineness is both a Unitarian and a denier of that most stupendous miracle the raising of Lazarus, it is possible his phraseology might be altered.
