Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alfred Adler states that "The supreme law of life is this: The sense of worth shall not be allowed to be diminished." His view supports a central theme in Boss Canvasman. The setting involves the O'Donnell family and ex-circus workers during the 1930s, a time of the Great Depression and Prohibition in the United States. Devlin O'Donnell strives for a sense of well-being only to experience painful shame through the bizarre behavior of his brother, Egan. As Devlin seeks the love of Eileen Coleman, he fears Egan's mannerisms will convince Eileen that Devlin is also mentally unbalanced. Throughout the narrative, he struggles to deny this interpretation. Egan's closeness to his mother, Maura, adds mystery to the novel. Determined to uncover its meaning, Devlin engages in a search that brings him to a secret Egan shares with Maura. At a pivotal point in the tale, the mystery unfolds, and Devlin explodes in drastic action. The ex-circus people provide further structure to the narrative. Jerry Burke is a former boss canvasman, the person responsible for erection of the main tent. Sean Sweeny who had unloaded flatcars befriends Devlin. Sean's ambiguous references to the boss canvasman puzzle Devlin, adding intrigue to the story. Injured in a circus accident, Sean longs for a return to the circus, a life maintaining his self-esteem. Sean's use of Irish lore and circus language bind the novel together metaphorically. His desire for recognition creates disturbing consequences for himself and Devlin.

Book Talkin Greenwich Village

    Book Details:
  • Author : David Browne
  • Publisher : Hachette Books
  • Release : 2024-09-17
  • ISBN : 0306827654
  • Pages : 441 pages

Download or read book Talkin Greenwich Village written by David Browne and published by Hachette Books. This book was released on 2024-09-17 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The definitive history of the rise and heyday of the revolutionary Greenwich Village music scene, based on new research and first-hand interviews with many of its legendary performers Although Greenwich Village encompasses less than a square mile in downtown New York, rarely has such a concise area nurtured so many innovative artists and genres. Over the course of decades, Billie Holiday, the Weavers, Sonny Rollins, Dave Van Ronk, Ornette Coleman, Bob Dylan, Nina Simone, Phil Ochs, and Suzanne Vega are just a few who migrated to the Village, recognizing it as a sanctuary for visionaries, non-conformists, and those looking to reinvent themselves. Working in the Village’s smokey coffeehouses and clubs, they chronicled the tumultuous Sixties, rewrote jazz history, and took folk and rock & roll into places they hadn’t been before. Based on over 150 new interviews (Judy Collins, Sonny Rollins, Herbie Hancock, Eric Andersen, Suzzy and Terre Roche, Suzanne Vega, Steve Forbert, Arlo Guthrie, John Sebastian, Shawn Colvin, the members of the Blues Project, and more), previously unseen documents, and author David Browne’s longtime immersion in the scene, Talkin’ Greenwich Village lends the saga the epic, panoramic scope it’s long deserved. It takes readers from the Fifties jamborees in Washington Square Park and into landmark venues like Gerde’s Folk City, the Gaslight Café, and the Village Vanguard, onto Dylan’s momentous arrival and returns, the no-holds-barred Seventies years (West Village discos, National Lampoon’s Lemmings), and the folk revival of the Eighties (Vega’s enduring “Tom’s Diner”). In eye-opening fashion, Browne also details the often-overlooked people of color in the Sixties folk clubs, reveals how the FBI and city government consistently kept their eyes on the community, unearths the machinations behind the infamous “beatnik riot” in Washington Square Park, and tells the interconnected tales of Van Ronk, the seminal band the Blues Project, and the beloved sister trio, the Roches. In also recounting the racial tensions, crackdowns, and changes in New York and music that infiltrated the neighborhood, Talkin’ Greenwich Village is more than just vivid cultural history. It also speaks to the rise and waning of bohemian culture itself, set to some of the most enduring lyrics, melodies, and jazz improvisations in American music.

Book Your Table Is Ready

Download or read book Your Table Is Ready written by Michael Cecchi-Azzolina and published by St. Martin's Press. This book was released on 2022-12-06 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A front-of-the-house Kitchen Confidential from a career maître d’hotel who manned the front of the room in New York City's hottest and most in-demand restaurants. From the glamorous to the entitled, from royalty to the financially ruined, everyone who wanted to be seen—or just to gawk—at the hottest restaurants in New York City came to places Michael Cecchi-Azzolina helped run. His phone number was passed around among those who wanted to curry favor, during the decades when restaurants replaced clubs and theater as, well, theater in the most visible, vibrant city in the world. Besides dropping us back into a vanished time, Your Table Is Ready takes us places we’d never be able to get into on our own: Raoul's in Soho with its louche club vibe; Buzzy O’Keefe’s casually elegant River Café (the only outer-borough establishment desirable enough to be included in this roster), from Keith McNally’s Minetta Tavern to Nolita’s Le Coucou, possibly the most beautiful room in New York City in 2018, with its French Country Auberge-meets-winery look and the most exquisite and enormous stands of flowers, changed every three days. From his early career serving theater stars like Tennessee Williams and Dustin Hoffman at La Rousse right through to the last pre-pandemic-shutdown full houses at Le Coucou, Cecchi-Azzolina has seen it all. In Your Table Is Ready, he breaks down how restaurants really run (and don’t), and how the economics work for owners and overworked staff alike. The professionals who gravitate to the business are a special, tougher breed, practiced in dealing with the demanding patrons and with each other, in a very distinctive ecosystem that’s somewhere between a George Orwell “down and out in....” dungeon and a sleek showman’s smoke-and-mirrors palace. Your Table Is Ready is a rollicking, raunchy, revelatory memoir.

Book This is the Sound of Irony Music Politics and Popular Culture

Download or read book This is the Sound of Irony Music Politics and Popular Culture written by Katherine L. Turner and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-03 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of irony in music is just beginning to be defined and critiqued, although it has been used, implied and decried by composers, performers, listeners and critics for centuries. Irony in popular music is especially worthy of study because it is pervasive, even fundamental to the music, the business of making music and the politics of messaging. Contributors to this collection address a variety of musical ironies found in the ’notes themselves,’ in the text or subtext, and through performance, reception and criticism. The chapters explore the linkages between irony and the comic, the tragic, the remembered, the forgotten, the co-opted, and the resistant. From the nineteenth to twenty-first centuries, through America, Europe and Asia, this provocative range of ironies course through issues of race, religion, class, the political left and right, country, punk, hip hop, folk, rock, easy listening, opera and the technologies that make possible our pop music experience. This interdisciplinary volume creates new methodologies and applies existing theories of irony to musical works that have made a cultural or political impact through the use of this most multifaceted of devices.
