Book Cognitive Grammar in Contemporary Fiction

Download or read book Cognitive Grammar in Contemporary Fiction written by Chloe Harrison and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2017-05-24 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book proposes an extension of Cognitive Grammar (Langacker 1987, 1991, 2008) towards a cognitive discourse grammar, through the unique environment that literary stylistic application offers. Drawing upon contemporary research in cognitive stylistics (Text World Theory, deixis and mind-modelling, amongst others), the volume scales up central Cognitive Grammar concepts (such as construal, grounding, the reference point model and action chains) in order to explore the attenuation of experience – and how it is simulated – in literary reading. In particular, it considers a range of contemporary texts by Neil Gaiman, Jennifer Egan, Jonathan Safran Foer, Ian McEwan and Paul Auster. This application builds upon previous work that adopts Cognitive Grammar for literary analysis and provides the first extended account of Cognitive Grammar in contemporary fiction.

This book was released on 2023-03-12 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Birds love to sing. Some can even talk and sing. Ever seen a colorful parrot or a parakeet repeat everything you say? Or perhaps they’ve even serenaded you with a song. But what if you met a bird that could also rap? In the delightfully illustrated children’s book The Juggling, Rapping Buzzard and Friends, meet Mr. Pepper and his wife Cutie Pie. One day Mr. Pepper finds a waterlogged creature on the ground and comes to its rescue. Turns out that the creature is a buzzard named Survivor and she has some very spectacular talents. She can juggle and sing rap songs. She can also change the appearance of other animals. As you read this fascinating story, you will be able to imagine, identify, and visualize the uniqueness of the relationship Mr. Pepper and Cutie Pie have with their animal friends, and how they try to understand them all. The skunks nearby claim to have a special stinky juice power. Their juice can cause you to cry if it gets into your eyes. Hearing the animals’ raps will give you a reason to rap too as you read along. You might even be able to strike up a rap or two of your own.

Book God Dr Buzzard and the Bolito Man

Download or read book God Dr Buzzard and the Bolito Man written by Cornelia Walker Baily and published by Anchor. This book was released on 2001-07-17 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Equal parts cultural history and memoir, God, Dr. Buzzard, and the Bolito Man recounts a traditional way of life--that of the Geechee Indians of Sapelo Island-- that is threatened by change, with stories that speak to our deepest notions of family, community, and a connection to one’s homeland. Cornelia Walker Bailey models herself after the African griot, the tribal storytellers who keep the history of their people. Bailey’s people are the Geechee, whose cultural identity has been largely preserved due to the relative isolation of Sapelo, a barrier island off the coast of Georgia. In this rich account, Bailey captures the experience of growing up in an island community that counted the spirits of its departed among its members, relied on pride and ingenuity in the face of hardship, and taught her firsthand how best to reap the bounty of the marshes, woods and ocean that surrounded her. The power of this memoir to evoke the life of Sapelo Island is remarkable, and the history it preserves is invaluable. “A special book that reveals the unconquerable spirit of a people who, though torn from their African homeland, imprinted America with a unique culture that continues to endure.” --Ebony

Book excerpt: A coming-of-age story set in the isolated, murky swamps of Louisiana When the mighty wind blows through the swamps of southern Louisiana, it changes not only the land, but the inhabitants as well. Just such a wind brought a lone infant into the care of the Chitimacha Indians deep in the Atchafalaya swamp. Raised by the tribal holy man, Storm Rider grows to adolescence as a respected tribal member, steeped in the wisdom and traditions of his adopted people. Their clan competitions, life-cycle rituals, social interactions, and subsistence labors are well explained in this historical novel. When captured by an enemy raiding party, Storm Rider and his nemesis, the village bully, forge a bond that delivers them from danger and charts their futures. Love, hate, friendship, and loyalty ride the dark bayou waters and converge at the sacred Rain Tree. Swamps, hurricanes, cannibals, and unforgettable characters are interwoven as tightly as one of old Cane Basket's watertight baskets in this anthropologically accurate story of American Indian cultures in conflict.

Book Red On Red

    Book Details:
  • Author : Craig S. Womack
  • Publisher : U of Minnesota Press
  • Release : 1999-11-15
  • ISBN : 1452942552
  • Pages : 356 pages

Download or read book Red On Red written by Craig S. Womack and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 1999-11-15 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An entertaining and enlightening proposal for a new way to read Native American literature. How can a square peg fit into a round hole? It can’t. How can a door be unlocked with a pencil? It can’t. How can Native literature be read applying conventional postmodern literary criticism? It can’t.That is Craig Womack’s argument in Red on Red. Indian communities have their own intellectual and cultural traditions that are well equipped to analyze Native literary production. These traditions should be the eyes through which the texts are viewed. To analyze a Native text with the methods currently dominant in the academy, according to the author, is like studying the stars with a magnifying glass. In an unconventional and piercingly humorous appeal, Womack creates a dialogue between essays on Native literature and fictional letters from Creek characters who comment on the essays. Through this conceit, Womack demonstrates an alternative approach to American Indian literature, with the letters serving as a “Creek chorus” that offers answers to the questions raised in his more traditional essays. Topics range from a comparison of contemporary oral versions of Creek stories and the translations of those stories dating back to the early twentieth century, to a queer reading of Cherokee author Lynn Riggs’s play The Cherokee Night.Womack argues that the meaning of works by Native peoples inevitably changes through evaluation by the dominant culture. Red on Red is a call for self-determination on the part of Native writers and a demonstration of an important new approach to studying Native works-one that engages not only the literature, but also the community from which the work grew.
