Book excerpt: 'Buying a Horse' is an essay sharing several anecdotes on buying horses by William Dean Howells. He begins by saying that if one has enough money, there seems no reason why one should not go and buy such a horse as he wants. A friend of his proceeded to do so: He was about removing from Charlesbridge, where he had lived many happy years without a horse, farther into the country, where there were charming drives and inconvenient distances, and where a horse would be very desirable, if not quite necessary. But as a horse seemed at first an extravagant if not sinful desire, he began by talking vaguely round, and rather hinting than declaring that he thought somewhat of buying. The professor to whom he first intimated his purpose flung himself from his horse's back to the grassy border of the sidewalk where my friend stood, and said he would give him a few points. "In the first place don't buy a horse that shows much daylight under him, unless you buy a horse-doctor with him; get a short-legged horse; and he ought to be short and thick in the barrel,"—or words to that effect. "Don't get a horse with a narrow forehead: there are horse-fools as well as the other kind, and you want a horse with room for brains. And look out that he's all right forward."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from "How to Buy a Horse" Sales. Sales are either public or private. Public sales are conducted by auctioneers and dealers; private sales by private owners and dealers. Sales, whether public or private, are usually followed as soon as possible by a transference of the horse to the buyer, who is allowed two days in which to give the horse fair examination and trial, at the end of which time, if the horse is not returned the sale is considered complete. Two days is the rule most strictly abided by, but under certain conditions this may be extended to ten days or even two weeks. Letters or evidence bearing upon a contract may complete it in law so that when horses are bought by correspondence the letters and documents act as a part of the contract. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Points on Buying a Horse: Showing the Means by Which Unsoundness and Faults May Be Discovered; Also the Tricks and Methods Frequently Used to Effect Sales The horse is a noble and useful animal, yet very little is known about him, as regards good and bad points, by the average person. In consequence, when buying for the first time, the buyer must either enlist the services of a friend who is a judge of a horse, employ a veterinary surgeon, or blindly bid in a horse at auction on general appearances and trust to luck that he will turn out satisfactorily. Such persons seem to forget or entire ly disregard the fact that horses when offered for sale, especially by dealers, are brought to the best possible condition, perhaps having been doctored for weeks prior to sale, and possibly when they pass into their owners' hands will steadily decline and be almost useless. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Horse: Its Selection and Purchase; Together With the Law of Warranty, Sale, C The object of this book is to show buyers of horses what to select and what to reject when purchasing without professional guidance. Veterinary Surgeons too often make a distinction - a convenient one - between the terms "practically" and "legally" sound. For instance, a horse may have some slight defect, not likely at the time nor indeed at any future date to interfere with its working capabilities, and the animal may in fact be likely to prove just as serviceable as one free from the defect Such a horse would be spoken of as being "practically" sound, but soundness at law means that the animal is entirely free from any defects which at the time or at any subsequent date could interfere with its usefulness. At law a horse is either sound or unsound, no matter how trifling the defect from which it may be suffering. Defective conformation does not constitute unsoundness; yet, as it may predispose an animal to injury, it may rank as being on the border line. The chapter on "Conformation" is intended to give the reader a general idea of the good and bad points of a horse. Although it must be a very difficult matter for an amateur to form a correct, or even a fairly correct, estimate as to the usefulness of a horse in the absence of considerable practical experience, it is hoped that the information given on this point may be found of real practical use. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Gleason's Horse Book: The Only Authorized Work by America's King of Horse Tamers; Comprising History, Breeding, Training, Breaking, Buying, Feeding, Grooming, Shoeing, Doctoring, Telling Age, and General Care of the Horse It is certain that at no period in the history of this country has the horse stood so high in general estimation, or by the dis play of his various powers rendered himself an object more worthy of our consideration. As greater attention is now paid to the breeding of horses, for the different purposes of the turf and the road, so should our anxiety for their education increase. The object of this publication is to render as plain and familiar as possible a subject that has for a length of time remained in obscurity. The want of a work advancing practical facts and illustrations has long been severely felt and acknowledged. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The ABC of the Horse: How to Buy, How to Tell Age, Management, Fraudulent Practices, Ailments, Treatment, Etc., Etc The little book, which now makes its bow to the public, has not any pretentious aims. It is not intended as a competitor with the large and serious works which have of late years placed such a fund of valuable information at the disposal of the lover of the equine race. T lze ABC of Me Home merely seeks to render a little help to the man who keeps one, or, it may be two horses for pleasure, and who whilst desirous for the well-being of his animals, has not the time, or perhaps the inclination, to wade through a large and technical volume. I do not for one moment profess to say anything new in the book, but merely to give the owner an opportunity of learning sufficient to prevent a display of ignorance in the presence of the groom he employs, the dealer he may be buying from. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Examination of Horses as to Soundness: And Selection as to Purchase In offering this treatise to the public, my idea is to assist the horse-owner, the farmer, and the colonist to judge for himself as to the practical soundness of a horse he may be interested in - for it is not always convenient, or even practical, to send for the veterinary surgeon whenever a horse has to be looked over - and I shall endeavour to make myself as clear as possible to this class of my readers, avoiding as far as I can all technicalities with this purpose in view. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Horse Hay and grain have always been so abundant in America that every farmer could afford to keep at least one horse, however small his holding. The business of all except the older great cities is still largely carried on by men who were reared on the farm and who love the horse. This fact, coupled with cheap maintenance and abundant traffic, has-filled the cities as well as the country districts with horses. Unfortunately, until the twelfth Census was taken, we have had no means of knowing the exact number. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
