Book Butyl Benzyl Phthalate

Download or read book Butyl Benzyl Phthalate written by M. E. Meek and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A concise assessment of the risks to human health and the environment posed by exposure to butyl benzyl phthalate (BBP). This chemical is mainly used as a plasticizer in polyvinyl chloride for vinyl floor tiles, vinyl foams, and carpet backing. Smaller quantities are used in the production of cellulose, plastics and polyurethane. Releases to the environment may occur during manufacturing, from products containing BBP from municipal landfills, in exhaust gases from automobiles, and from combustion of refuse. Most environmental release is to the air, where BBP is removed by photooxidation and rainwater. The chemical is readily biodegraded in surface water sediment and soil. Most studies of exposure of the general population have concentrated on levels in indoor air and in foods stored in packaging containing BBP. The low levels detected support the conclusion that exposures via air drinking-water, and soil are negligible.

Book Phthalates and Cumulative Risk Assessment

Download or read book Phthalates and Cumulative Risk Assessment written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2009-01-19 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: People are exposed to a variety of chemicals throughout their daily lives. To protect public health, regulators use risk assessments to examine the effects of chemical exposures. This book provides guidance for assessing the risk of phthalates, chemicals found in many consumer products that have been shown to affect the development of the male reproductive system of laboratory animals. Because people are exposed to multiple phthalates and other chemicals that affect male reproductive development, a cumulative risk assessment should be conducted that evaluates the combined effects of exposure to all these chemicals. The book suggests an approach for cumulative risk assessment that can serve as a model for evaluating the health risks of other types of chemicals.

  • ISBN : 0128124342
  • Pages : 428 pages

Download or read book Toxicoepigenetics written by Shaun D. McCullough and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2018-11-02 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Toxicoepigenetics: Core Principles and Applications examines the core aspects of epigenetics, including chromatin biology, DNA methylation, and non-coding RNA, as well as fundamental techniques and considerations for studying each of these mechanisms of epigenetic regulation. Although its integration into the field of toxicology is in its infancy, epigenetics have taken center stage in the study of diseases such as cancer, diabetes, and neurodegeneration. Increasing the presence of epigenetics in toxicological research allows for a more in-depth understanding of important aspects of toxicology such as the role of the environment and lifestyle influencing the individual susceptibility to these effects and the trans-generational transmission of these health effects and susceptibilities. Methods chapters are included to help improve efficacy and efficiency of protocols in both the laboratory and the classroom. Toxicoepigenetics: Core Principles and Applications is an essential book for researchers and academics using epigenetics in toxicology research and study. Introduces the fundamental principles and practices for understanding the role of the epigenome in toxicology Presents the foundation of epigenetics for toxicologists with a broad range of backgrounds Discusses the incorporation of epigenetics and epigenomics into current toxicological studies and interpretation of epigenetic data in toxicological applications

Book Experimental Freshwater Microcosm Biodegradability Study of Butyl Benzyl Phthalate

Download or read book Experimental Freshwater Microcosm Biodegradability Study of Butyl Benzyl Phthalate written by WJ. Adams and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A 30-day freshwater microcosm study was conducted to measure the biodegradability of butyl benzyl phthalate (BBP) in water and sediment. Microcosms were designed to simulate the flow rate, water to sediment surface ratio, and environmental conditions of the Illinois River. Water and undisturbed sediment cores were brought into the laboratory from the Illinois River and placed in 53-L all-glass microcosms. BBP was tested at 10 and 100 ?g/L and at 100 ?g/L sterilized with five replicates at each concentration. BBP was added to each microcosm three times per week at one half the initial dose. The microcosms were sealed to trap radiolabeled carbon dioxide (14C-CO2) for purposes of assessing mineralization and obtaining a mass balance on each microcosm. Uniformly ring-labeled 14C-BBP was used as the test material and analyses were performed for parent BBP as well as for carbon-14 (14C) intermediates.

Book Application of Systematic Review Methods in an Overall Strategy for Evaluating Low Dose Toxicity from Endocrine Active Chemicals

Download or read book Application of Systematic Review Methods in an Overall Strategy for Evaluating Low Dose Toxicity from Endocrine Active Chemicals written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2017-08-14 with total page 423 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To safeguard public health, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) must keep abreast of new scientific information and emerging technologies so that it can apply them to regulatory decision-making. For decades the agency has dealt with questions about what animal-testing data to use to make predictions about human health hazards, how to perform dose-response extrapolations, how to identify and protect susceptible subpopulations, and how to address uncertainties. As alternatives to traditional toxicity testing have emerged, the agency has been faced with additional questions about how to incorporate data from such tests into its chemical assessments and whether such tests can replace some traditional testing methods. Endocrine active chemicals (EACs) have raised concerns that traditional toxicity-testing protocols might be inadequate to identify all potential hazards to human health because they have the ability to modulate normal hormone function, and small alterations in hormone concentrations, particularly during sensitive life stages, can have lasting and significant effects. To address concerns about potential human health effects from EACs at low doses, this report develops a strategy to evaluate the evidence for such low-dose effects.
