Book Lacrimal Gland Tear Film and Dry Eye Syndromes 2

Download or read book Lacrimal Gland Tear Film and Dry Eye Syndromes 2 written by David A. Sullivan and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 1013 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the past two decades, a significant international research effort has been di rected toward understanding the composition and regulation of the preocular tear film. This effort has been motivated by the recognition that the tear film plays an essential role in maintaining corneal and conjunctival integrity, protecting against microbial challenge, and preserving visual acuity. In addition, research has been stimulated by the knowledge that alteration or deficiency of the tear film, which occurs in countless individuals throughout the world, may lead to desiccation of the ocular surface, ulceration and perfo ration of the cornea, an increased incidence of infectious disease, and, potentially, pro nounced visual disability and blindness. To promote further progress in this field of vision research, the Second International Conference on the Lacrimal Gland, Tear Film and Dry Eye Syndromes: Basic Science and Clinical Relevance was held at the Southampton Princess Resort in Bermuda November 16-19, 1996. This conference was organized and directed by David A. Sullivan, Ph. D. , codirected by Darlene A. Dartt, Ph. D. , and Michele A. Meneray, Ph. D. , and sponsored by the Schepens Eye Research Institute (Boston, MA), an affiliate of Harvard Medical School. The meeting was designed to assess critically the current knowledge and "state of the art" research on the structure and function of lacrimal tissue, tears, and the ocular sur face in both health and disease.

Book The Retinal Pigment Epithelium

Download or read book The Retinal Pigment Epithelium written by Michael F. Marmor and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1998 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The retinal pigment epithelium is a critical tissue within the eye. It lies directly behind the retina, where it provides metabolic support to the photoreceptors and controls their local environment. As a result, the RPE is vital to retinal function, but also a site of aging and disease that cause dysfunction and visual loss. This book brings together comprehensive reviews of basic and clinical science concerning the RPE. It is organized to juxtapose chapters on RPE disease with chapters on the underlying pathophysiology. These include up-to-date accounts of growth factors, laser effects, proliferative vitreoretinopathy, Bruch's membrane pathology, as well as new diagnostic tools such as ocular coherence tomography, in vivo imaging of lipofuscin and non-photic electrical responses. Other chapters cover pharmacology and toxicology, mechanisms of retinal adhesion and detachment, RPE pigments and transport, congenital and dystrophic diseases, animal models of RPE disease, and different aspects of age-related macular degeneration. The history and evolutionary aspects of the RPE are also presented. The contributing authors are experienced clinicians and eminent basic scientists who work on this critical part of the eye. The book will be a valuable resource for anyone interested in the eye, and a necessity for specialists in the fields of retinal physiology and retinal disease.

Book Diseases of the Vitreo Macular Interface

Download or read book Diseases of the Vitreo Macular Interface written by Aniz Girach and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-10-01 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This clinically oriented book is the first to be devoted wholly to the diagnosis and treatment of vitreo-macular interface disease, characterized by a combination of vitreo-macular adhesion (VMA) and vitreo-macular traction (VMT) that is implicated in a variety of disorders. World-renowned experts in the field discuss epidemiologic, anatomic, and physiologic aspects, document the findings obtained with newer imaging techniques, such as spectral domain optical coherence tomography, describe the treatment options, and report on the results of preclinical and clinical trials, including some previously unpublished findings. This book will prove invaluable for ophthalmologists as we advance toward a future in which treatments of diseases such as age-related macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy will likely require adjunctive therapy to tackle VMA/VMT concurrently.
