Book excerpt: Julia Lang expected a nice night away from the office - free of thoughts about the case, her failed engagement, her past. But she should have known better. Her past haunted her every chance it got these days, and tonight it came in the form of lyrics she didn't ever expect to hear again - not after a decade, not with a thousand miles between them, not in the arms of another man - and definitely not in the form of a confession. Now, faced with the lyrics she had waited so long to hear, Julia must decide if the song - and more importantly, the boy behind it - is enough to leave her new life behind.

Through engaging anecdotes and inspired advice, profiles of home gardeners throughout the country, and interviews with scientists and horticulturalists, Lawson applies the broader lessons of ecology to our own outdoor spaces. Detailed chapters address planting for wildlife by choosing native species; providing habitats that shelter baby animals, as well as birds, bees, and butterflies; creating safe zones in the garden; cohabiting with creatures often regarded as pests; letting nature be your garden designer; and encouraging natural processes and evolution in the garden. The Humane Gardener fills a unique niche in describing simple principles for both attracting wildlife and peacefully resolving conflicts with all the creatures that share our world.

Download or read book Weeds written by Zachary J. S. Falck and published by University of Pittsburgh Pre. This book was released on 2011-03-15 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As long as humans have existed, they've worked and competed with plants to shape their surroundings. As cities developed and expanded, their diverse spaces were covered with and colored by weeds. In Weeds, Zachary J. S. Falck presents a comprehensive history of "happenstance plants" in American urban environments. Beginning in the late nineteenth century and continuing to the present, he examines the proliferation, perception, and treatment of weeds in metropolitan centers from Boston to Los Angeles. In dynamic city ecosystems, population movements and economic cycles establish and transform habitats where vegetation continuously changes. Americans came to associate weeds with infectious diseases and allergies, illegal dumping, vagrants, drug dealers, and decreased property values. Local governments and citizens' groups attempted to eliminate unwanted plants to better their urban environments and improve the health and safety of inhabitants. Over time, a growing understanding of the natural environment made "happenstance plants" more tolerable and even desirable. In the twenty-first century, scientists have warned that the effects of global warming and the heat-trapping properties of cities are producing more robust strains of weeds. Falck shows that nature continues to flourish where humans have struggled: in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, in the abandoned homes of the California housing bust, and alongside crumbling infrastructure. Weeds are here to stay.

Book Thoreau s Garden

  • Publisher : Stackpole Books
  • Release : 1996
  • ISBN : 9780811717281
  • Pages : 476 pages

Download or read book Thoreau s Garden written by H. Peter Loewer and published by Stackpole Books. This book was released on 1996 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The latest book by this notable writer on horticultural topics deftly weaves excerpted reveries from Thoreau's journals together with copious notes on native plants gathered by Loewer himself. The result is an agreeable foray into the fertile landscape Thoreau knew so well. Although today's gardeners can only dream of such remarkable wild spaces, as Loewer suggests, it might be that 'the best garden is a garden of the mind.' Thus, the lively text feeds the craving for imaginary gardens, first by musing on the scientific naming of plants, then by proceeding to highlight selected trees and shrubs, prairie grasses, and outstanding wildflowers--of wetlands and woodlands. Loewer conjures up enough plant minutiae (fascinating facts, myths, historical particulars, practical uses, etc.) to satisfy the most demanding avid gardener. A new book by Loewer is cause for celebration. - Alice Joyce-
