Book excerpt: The history of Butte des Morts, Wisconsin is a story of a community whichbegan as a Menominee village and developed, as many American frontiercommunities did, as European immigrants settled there. With its desirablelocation on a hill overlooking the confluence of the Wolf and Fox Rivers, andlocated on a major Native American trail running from Green Bay to Prairie duChien, the Menominee people established the village they called Mas-pay-quota-noh. The waterways and marshes produced food and furs relied upon by theMenominee for their survival. The arrival of white traders who sought furs tofeed a demand in European markets would begin a transition which saw Buttedes Morts develop into a commercial center in the 19th Century and ultimatelyinto the quaint community it is today. The founding of a fur trading post at Butte des Morts by Augustin Grignon andJacques Porlier in 1818 began the transition of a Native American village into thecommunity of today. Settlers started to arrive after lands of the Menominee wereceded to the U.S. Government in a series of treaties. Commercial developmentfollowed, homes were built and Butte des Morts became a center of activity inwhat is now Winnebago County. Lands were platted, subdivided and sold. Bythe early 20th Century, the village had a number of businesses operating to servethe surrounding area. The location, with its abundant natural resources, attractedfisherman and hunters. Many seasonal and year-round homes were constructedto house them.Destination point eating establishments became an important part of the village.Real estate development proceeded to further plat and subdivide lands onwhich homes would be built to house the people who started moving into thearea in greater numbers. With its breathtaking panoramic views of Lake Buttedes Morts, the village was established as a cozy residential community, and anattractive slice of Americana.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fate and transport of natural and anthropogenic sediment-borne organic contaminants is a critical environmental issue and complex processes are involved that until now have been poorly defined. Organic Substances and Sediments in Water is a three-volume book that provides the best information available regarding the many interdisciplinary factors affecting organic substances associated with particulates in water. Topics discussed include absorption and transport of contaminants associated with particles; interfacial processes affecting fate and transport of organic substances associated with particles; the release of contaminants in receiving water bodies; water treatment; the role of biological factors in the fate and transport of organic contaminants in aqueous systems; development of biotransformation in natural and anthropogenic systems; the use of organic contaminant and sediment chemicals; biological and physical data to refine models to be used by resource managers; and chemical and biological processes that affect the fate and transport of organic constituents and determine degradation of contaminants and uptake in plants. This will be an important reference for environmental chemists, environmental engineers, environmental biologists, water treatment and natural system modelers, and soils scientists.
Download or read book The Flavor of Wisconsin written by Harva Hachten and published by Wisconsin Historical Society. This book was released on 2013-09-03 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Wisconsin Historical Society published Harva Hachten's The Flavor of Wisconsin in 1981. It immediately became an invaluable resource on Wisconsin foods and foodways. This updated and expanded edition explores the multitude of changes in the food culture since the 1980s. It will find new audiences while continuing to delight the book’s many fans. And it will stand as a legacy to author Harva Hachten, who was at work on the revised edition at the time of her death in April 2006. While in many ways the first edition of The Flavor of Wisconsin has stood the test of time very well, food-related culture and business have changed immensely in the twenty-five years since its publication. Well-known regional food expert and author Terese Allen examines aspects of food, cooking, and eating that have changed or emerged since the first edition, including the explosion of farmers' markets; organic farming and sustainability; the "slow food" movement; artisanal breads, dairy, herb growers, and the like; and how relatively recent immigrants have contributed to Wisconsin's remarkably rich food scene.
