Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In their contribution to the first edition of this Handbook, entitled "The Teeth," LEHNER and PLENK (1936) discussed the tissues constituting the "perio dontium" rather briefly. In contrast to the detailed paragraphs dealing with, for example, enamel and dentine, the section (about 40 pages and 20 illustra tions, mostly drawings) devoted to periodontal tissues failed to provide a factual review and summary of the contemporary knowledge and latest developments in research on the various components of the periodontium. Instead, much of the text was an attempt to arrive at conclusions from often purely semantic speculations, playing the various schools of thought against each other, provid ing arguments in favor of the authors' views and arguments for the feasibility and probability of accepting or rejecting the often diverse opinions, while the reader was referred to the already existing literature for factual details. Since 1936, however, factual details ofthe structural biology of the periodon tal tissues, i. e. their development, structure, function, and physiology, have been greatly extended and have been internationally accepted. With much less opin ionated belief to cope with, this knowledge has formed the solid foundation upon which diagnosis, prevention, and treatment in the fields of clinical perio dontology, modem orthodontics, and re- and transplantation procedures of teeth have been built.

Book excerpt: Lesions of the oral cavity have an enormous impact on the quality of life of patients with advanced disease. Psychological problems relate to the role that the oral cavity plays in communication and social life. This book provides comprehensive, clinically relevant, evidence-based guidelines on oral problems to ensure first rate care. The scientific foundations and research base for their management underpin the discussion throughout. A multi-disciplinary group of contributors provide authoritative guidelines on clinical features, investigations, and pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatment, as well as complementary therapies. Chapters cover oral assessment, hygiene, domiciliary dental care, infections, taste disturbance, pain, HIV infection and AIDS, neurological diseases, and paediatric problems. Highly illustrated throughout, the book also includes an extensive colour plate section. This book was released on 1994-05-31 with total page 656 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In our increasingly active society, children, teenagers, adults, and the elderly are swimming, jogging, weight training, and competing in a wide variety of individual and team sports. Approximately 85-95% of athletic problems are handled by primary care providers, many of whom are serving as team or school doctors. Sports Medicine for the Primary Care Physician, Second Edition, provides the latest information on major topics in sports science and clinical medicine that affect primary care physicians. The first section of the book presents the history of sports medicine, the role of the primary care doctor in sports, and the scientific ingredients of good athletic care (e.g., pre-participation exam, drugs/doping, prevention and protective equipment, nutrition). The second section considers the nonoperative management of common sports injuries. After an introduction in which epidemiological, rehabilitative, and healing concerns are presented, on-field emergencies and their management are discussed. General and individual sport injuries are detailed in a cohesive, consistent format that includes relevant anatomy; epidemiology; common eponyms; mechanism of injury; history; physical, laboratory, and radiological findings; differential diagnosis; treatment; rehabilitation; consultation guidelines; and prognosis and prevention. Chapter bibliographies provide general and specific references for additional information. Appendices include pertinent sports curricula for professionals involved in athletic care, equipment lists, ACSM position statements, sports jargon compendium, and a detailed guide to common stretching/rehabilitative exercises.
