Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bussaco There are many people living who remember the time when everybody knew all about the Duke of Wellington and the Peninsular War, but a generation is now spring ing up, or rather has sprung up, of which the majority knows little and cares less about the Great Duke and his campaigns. On the other hand, I find a great number of people on both sides of the Atlantic who are so much interested therein as'to read every available book on the subject. Amongst these are, of course, to be found large numbers of soldiers - for the Peninsular Wars were wars in which strategy had an all-important part - while the display of tactics was of no mean order. I do not propose to put before the reader my views on strategy in these campaigns, and only occasionally do I intend to allude to tactics. My Object is to make available good plans of the battles accompanied by views illustrative of the important points. Some histories give the plans more or less correctly, and others give views, but what is wanted nowadays is a judicious mixture of both plans and views. A Vietnamese Moses is the story of Philiphê Binh, a Vietnamese Catholic priest who in 1796 traveled from Tonkin to the Portuguese court in Lisbon to persuade its ruler to appoint a bishop for his community of ex-Jesuits. Based on Binh’s surviving writings from his thirty-seven-year exile in Portugal, this book examines how the intersections of global and local Roman Catholic geographies shaped the lives of Vietnamese Christians in the early modern era. The book also argues that Binh’s mission to Portugal and his intense lobbying on behalf of his community reflected the agency of Vietnamese Catholics, who vigorously engaged with church politics in defense of their distinctive Portuguese-Catholic heritage. George E. Dutton demonstrates the ways in which Catholic beliefs, histories, and genealogies transformed how Vietnamese thought about themselves and their place in the world. This sophisticated exploration of Vietnamese engagement with both the Catholic Church and Napoleonic Europe provides a unique perspective on the complex history of early Vietnamese Christianity.
