Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Business of War incisively interrogates the development and contemporary implications of the military-industrial complex. It exposes the moral dangers of life in neoliberal economies dependent upon war-making for their growth and brings the Christian tradition’s abundance of resources into conversation with this phenomenon. In doing so, the authors invite us to rethink the moral possibilities of Christian life in the present day with an eye toward faithful resistance to “the business of war” and its influence in every aspect of our lives. In combining biblical, historical, theological, and ethical analyses of “the business of war,” the authors invite us to better understand it as a new moral problem that demands a new, faithful response. Book Private Military and Security Companies

Download or read book Private Military and Security Companies written by Erika Calazans and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2016-05-11 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book’s primary concern is the application of International Humanitarian Law and International Human Rights Law in addressing the business conduct of Private Military and Security Companies (PMSCs) during armed conflicts, as well as state responsibility for human rights violations and current attempts at international regulation. The book discusses four interconnected themes. First, it differentiates private contractors from mercenaries, presenting an historical overview of private violence. Second, it situates PMSCs’ employees under the legal status of civilian or combatant in accordance with the Third and Fourth Geneva Conventions of 1949. It then investigates the existing law on state responsibility and what sort of responsibility companies and their employees can face. Finally, the book explores current developments on regulation within the industry, on national, regional and international levels. These themes are connected by the argument that, in order to find gaps in the existing laws, it is necessary to establish what they are, what law is applicable and what further developments are needed.

Book Laws of War and 21st Century Conflict

Download or read book Laws of War and 21st Century Conflict written by E. L. Gaston and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Laws of War and 21st Century Conflict explores how international law considers and confronts the so-called new warfare. To many, modern conflict appears unlike any we have known before. A modern battlefield might as easily be found in an urban shopping mall or in the frontline trenches of a failed state. Weaponry that once populated science fiction novels and movies is now a reality, with unmanned aerial drones used against military targets in several countries and automated robots replacing some soldiers on the battlefield. Globalization and the diffusion of technology have eroded state controls and empowered other actors, from terrorist groups to mercenaries. Now, the most deadly threats might be activated by the push of a cell-phone button or from a computer hacker's screen on the other side of the world.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The War Revenue Law of 1898: Explained The war revenue law OF 1898 touches the business world at every point, and a thorough collee tion of all authorities interpreting its provisions must, therefore, be of value to all whose interests are within their scope. The present work contains the text of the law; indicates the sources of the different sections; and, in connection with each section, presents such rules of interpretation as the government authorities and the decisions of the courts upon previous laws, from which the present Act is in great part derived, now make applicable; also the decisions of the English courts upon similar provisions of British Stamp Acts. In the Appendix, together with certain regulations of the Bureau of Internal Revenue, will be found a valna ble paper prepared by the Abstract Club of Boston, upon the practical workings of the law in relation to real estate transactions, and here included by their permission. In this matter we have especially to thank Charles S. Rackemanu, Esq., of the Boston Bar, a member of that club, for his kind offices The authors are also indebted to George P. Beckford, Esq., and George E. Fox, Esq., both of the Boston Bar, for their aid in the preparation of the book and the verification of authorities. Book War Economies and International Law

Download or read book War Economies and International Law written by Mark B. Taylor and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2021-07-15 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Economic activity continues during war. But what rules apply when US troops occupy Syrian oil fields? Who is responsible when multinational companies use minerals extracted by child labourers in war zones? This book examines how international law regulates the war economies that are at the heart of strategic competition between great powers and help sustain the irregular warfare in today's war zones. Drawing on advances in our understanding of the social and economic dynamics in war zones, this book identifies predation, a combination of violence and economic opportunity, as the core pathology of war economies. The author presents a framework for understanding the regulation of war economies based on the history of international law and existing norms of international humanitarian law, international criminal law, international human rights law and the law of international peace and security. War Economies and International Law concludes that the pathologies of predation in war demand answers based on an international regulatory strategy.
