Download or read book Sociolinguistics and Business Talk written by Yeonkwon Jung and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-04-21 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book delivers essential skills in “spoken” professional communications, presenting theoretical and applied frameworks for business talk using English as a lingua franca. Adopting a role-playing approach mimicking various professional settings, it assesses the strength of the well-reasoned argument, the logical links that convince the audience of the coherence of the speaker’s argument and the necessary linguistics competencies. This book centers on a variety of situations that commonly take place in business organizations (such as relational talk; call center talk; job application talk) and addresses key skills such as conflict resolution and collaborative problem solving through communication, which are key for both students and practitioners. In addition it analyses spoken business discourse data with the four main sources of communicative competence: grammatical competence, discourse competence, sociolinguistic competence and strategic competence in order to highlight how they are used in business speaking practices.

Download or read book Adult English Language Teaching written by Valentina Kononova and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-05-25 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores cross-international experiences in the field of adult English language teaching and learning, using cross-cultural dialogues to hear voices from different countries and different settings – formal, informal and non-formal – discussing how their lifelong learning has or is still in the process of helping them to change their lives. The book addresses two major questions: (1) How do adults learn languages and transform themselves through learning? (2) How do authorities and societies build capacity for sustainable language development? It will be of interest to researchers, policymakers and adult language teachers, concerned with diverse aspects of teaching and learning English as lingua franca for enhancing the public good internationally. The book draws on the way in which the Western paradigm of lifelong learning was applied by an international team of inspired professionals to English language education in the Tempus project “Lifelong Language Learning University Centre Network for New Career Opportunities and Personal Development (UNICO)”. This project was undertaken by eleven universities in three countries: the Siberian Federal District of the Russian Federation, the Kyrgyz Republic, and the Republic of Tajikistan, in partnership with the Charles University in Prague, the Institute of Education from the University College London, and the University of Córdoba in Spain.

Download or read book Meanings and Prototypes RLE Linguistics B Grammar written by S.L. Tsohatzidis and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-02-03 with total page 631 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are fewer distinctions in any language than there are distinct things in the universe. If, therefore, languages are ways of representing the universe, a primary function of their elements must be to allow the much more varied kinds of elements out of which the universe is made to be categorized in specific ways. A prototype approach to linguistic categories is a particular way of answering the question of how this categorization operates. It involves two claims. First, that linguistic categorization exploits principles that are not specific to language but characterize most, if not all, processes of cognition. Secondly, that a basic principle by which cognitive and linguistic categories are organized is the prototype principle, which assigns elements to a category not because they exemplify properties that are absolutely required of each one of its members, but because they exhibit, in varying degrees, certain types of similarity with a particular category member which has been established as the best example (or: prototype) of its kind. The development of the prototype approach into a satisfactory body of theory obviously requires both that its empirical base be enriched, and that its conceptual foundations be clarified. These are the areas where this volume, in its 26 essays, makes original contributions. The first two parts contain discussions in which various kinds of linguistic phenomena are analysed in ways that make essential use of prototype notions. The last two parts contain discussions in which prototype notions themselves become the object, rather than the instrument, of analytical scrutiny.

Download or read book Life in a New Language written by Distinguished Professor of Applied Linguistics Ingrid Piller and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2024-06-03 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International migration and the social diversity it creates constitute one of the key global challenges of the early 21st century. Language and communication barriers can compromise equitable access in diverse societies, and where socioeconomic disadvantage becomes entrenched, it poses risks to security, productivity and quality of life. Clearly this is an important issue, and migrants and their language choices are heavily politicized; though political and media debates often rely on anecdotal conjecture or are ill-informed. Life in a New Language examines the language learning and settlement experiences of 130 migrants to Australia from 34 different countries in Africa, Asia, Europe, and Latin America over a period of 20 years. Reusing data shared from six separate sociolinguistic ethnographies, the book illuminates participants' lived experience of learning and communicating in a new language, finding work, and doing family. Additionally, participants' experiences with racism and identity making in a new context are explored. The research uncovers significant hardship but also migrants' courage and resilience. The book has implications for language service provision, migration policy, open science, and social justice movements.

Download or read book Dialogue With Bakhtin on Second and Foreign Language Learning written by Joan Kelly Hall and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2004-12-13 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is the first to explore links between the Russian linguist Mikhail Bakhtin's theoretical insights about language and practical concerns with second and foreign language learning and teaching. Situated within a strong conceptual framework and drawing from a rich empirical base, it reflects recent scholarship in applied linguistics that has begun to move away from formalist views of language as universal, autonomous linguistic systems, and toward an understanding of language as dynamic collections of cultural resources. According to Bakhtin, the study of language is concerned with the dialogue existing between linguistic elements and the uses to which they are put in response to the conditions of the moment. Such a view of language has significant implications for current understandings of second- and foreign-language learning. The contributors draw on some of Bakhtin's more significant concepts, such as dialogue, utterance, heteroglossia, voice, and addressivity to examine real world contexts of language learning. The chapters address a range of contexts including elementary- and university-level English as a second language and foreign language classrooms and adult learning situations outside the formal classroom. The text is arranged in two parts. Part I, "Contexts of Language Learning and Teaching," contains seven chapters that report on investigations into specific contexts of language learning and teaching. The chapters in Part II, "Implications for Theory and Practice," present broader discussions on second and foreign language learning using Bakhtin's ideas as a springboard for thinking. This is a groundbreaking volume for scholars in applied linguistics, language education, and language studies with an interest in second and foreign language learning; for teacher educators; and for teachers of languages from elementary to university levels. It is highly relevant as a text for graduate-level courses in applied linguistics and second- and foreign-language education.
