Book Ranking Business Schools

Download or read book Ranking Business Schools written by Linda Wedlin and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In her admirable book, Wedlin entangles what [business school] rankings really are and why they have become so important. . . The book contains plenty to interest the growing army of business school employees whose duties, at least in part, are concerned with boosting their institution s position in the rankings. Education and Training In times when the management education field is increasingly impacted by a proliferation of ranking exercises, this book is a timely and welcome contribution. Linda Wedlin unpacks for us the real meaning of the contemporary explosion of rankings. Rather than simple classification schemes and mechanisms, rankings are, she suggests, arenas where the field of business education is being created and re-created. They are the loci of boundary-work , whereby a field is progressively evolving and constituting itself. This is a convincing study relying on rich empirical data and carefully anchored in relevant theoretical debates. A must-read for all those, academics, students, policy-makers and education professionals, who want to understand the complex contemporary logics of higher education in management but also probably well beyond. Marie-Laure Djelic, ESSEC Business School, Paris, France League tables appear everywhere and have become important aspects of business school environments. Based on in-depth and creatively combined empirical studies, Linda Wedlin provides us with explanations and insights on the emergence and impact of such rankings. This book should be of great value for all those who seek to "play the ranking game". It gives a fresh perspective on how classification mechanisms drive the emergence, boundary setting and change of organizational fields. Kerstin Sahlin-Andersson, Uppsala University, Sweden A fascinating study of the complex issues surrounding MBA rankings. Business schools really hate them but at times have to pretend to love them. Magazines and newspapers are really interested in their sales potential but have to make pretensions about their veracity. Linda Wedlin focuses on an area rich in hypocrisy and hype, but also one where there are real consequences: ranking furthered re-inforces the homogenising tendencies of MBAs. Anthony Hopwood, Saïd Business School, University of Oxford, UK This is a most fascinating topic, dealt with in a manner which is both serious and entertaining everyone in a business school would want to read it. Linda Wedlin s excellent research is presented with a no-nonsense approach if there is anything worth counting, she counts it, and then interprets it, no fuss. Exemplary! Barbara Czarniawska, Göteborg University, Sweden This engaging book offers a fresh perspective on the burgeoning field of European management education and its intense concern with rankings. Using a creative mix of well-crafted research tools, Wedlin deftly captures a professional field in transition as it both expands and develops shared standards. Walter W. Powell, Stanford University, US International comparisons and rankings of universities and business schools have proliferated in recent years. Ranking Business Schools provides a welcome analysis of this development and its implications for the field of management education, theorizing the role of classifications such as rankings in forming and structuring organizational fields. Focusing on the European experience with rankings and the subsequent response, the book illustrates how business schools use rankings to form identities and positions, and to draw boundaries for the field. By both creating and confirming belonging to a business school community and providing distinction within that group, rankings are important for defining an international field of management education organizations, constructing an international business school market, and constitute an arena for debating and establishing the boundaries of this field. Building an extensive theoretical framework for understanding classification

Download or read book Bellwether written by David J. Toscano and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2022-05-15 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout the early years of the 20th century, Virginia was viewed as a Republican state. Citizens in the Commonwealth had not voted for a Democratic presidential candidate since 1964. In 2000, the GOP had just won the governor’s race, held both U.S. Senate seats, and had majorities in both the House of Delegates and the State Senate. By 2020, all of that had been reversed. During that period, Democrats won four of five governors contests, elected two US senators, and voted for Democratic presidential candidates in every year since 2008. In 2019, the House of Delegates, where Republicans maintained a 68-32 supermajority in 2011, flipped to Democratic control. With it, the state became a Democratic trifecta, where the party controlled all of the state’s levers of power. Bellwether tells the story of how this happened from someone who was “in the room at the time.” David Toscano began his service in the House in 2006 and became the Democratic Leader of the body in 2011. He examines the special nature of Virginia politics, the demographic changes that underpin much of its shifting political fortunes, and the policies and personalities at the center of the state’s dynamics for the last two decades.

Book The Ethically Responsible Organization

Download or read book The Ethically Responsible Organization written by Ronald R. Sims and published by IAP. This book was released on 2023-01-01 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today’s businesses have an obligation to conduct themselves in an ethical and responsible manner at all times. Fortunately, many businesses have historically embraced the idea that they can operate in an ethically & responsible manner. However, there are way too many companies that are willing to cut corners and do whatever it takes to make a profit, thus contributing to the vortex of mistrust, distrust, misinformation, disinformation and less than full disclosures as a result of their unethical misconduct. This book takes the position that ‘enough is enough’ and argues that all businesses can and must be ethically responsible no matter its size or whether it operates locally or globally. The book describes the features of an ethically responsible (e.g., ethical and socially responsible) organization that is committed to always “doing the right things” which means they are committed to building, institutionalizing and sustaining an ethically oriented organizational culture. Ethical responsibility means maintaining —even improving— your bottom line, while setting a high bar for high ethical standards AND making a positive contribution to society. The book argues that organizations must be attentive to ensuring that the culture has as its core accountability, responsibility, and learning which means it invests in developing and expecting all of its employees to be fully engaged in making ethical decisions and being ethical leaders. The book also discusses what it means to be an ethically responsible global business, leader, middle manager, and lower level employee. The Ethically Responsible Organization provides a detailed look at the importance of organizations doing preventive work to avoid ethical falls or scandals and takes the position that if such a fall or scandal occurs then the company should seize the moment and learn from the experience by becoming a learning organization. The book also takes the position that an ethically responsible organization is already a learning organization where continuous inquiry, diagnosis, reflection, learning and self-correction is the keystone of the way it operates. Finally, the book offers some ideas on how organizations can reinforce and sustain themselves as ethically responsible businesses today and in the future by taking a strategic approach to ethics that includes constant and consistent ethics training and education for all its employees and partners. In the end, the purpose of the book is to continue to increase our understanding of why organizations stray from “doing the right things” and how a focus on being ethically responsible can position companies to avoid or quickly respond to any potential ethical misconduct or find themselves in the list of the years’ top ethical scandals. This book is written for all those who also take the stance that ‘enough is enough’ when it comes to the headlines of another failure because the organization’s leaders would not commit to being ethically responsible and find themselves in the throes of an ethical scandal and unable to recover from it – and like “Humpty Dumpty, all the kings horses and all the kings men the company can’t recover from what was a preventable ethical fall.”

The countries situated between the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn are largely developing in nature. While the primary audience for the book consists of academics and students from the fields of economics (environmental economics, developmental economics), business, international trade, tourism, and area studies, it will also provide a practical resource for government policy analysts wanting to fully appreciate some of the key economic and business issues facing the region.
