Book excerpt: Presents a study of the business resources and capabilities in northern Canada, of the types of goods and services required now and in the future by oil and gas companies operating in that region, and of areas of opportunity for northern businesses in oil and gas industry markets. Study methodology placed special emphasis on obtaining first-hand information on northern supplier characteristics and constraints, and on oil/gas industry activity and purchasing practices. The study was oriented toward identifying incremental opportunities for northern companies to extend their sales or generate new sales to oil/gas company markets, and makes specific recommendations to that end. Oil and gas company purchasing profiles are presented for the exploration and production phases of development. Northern business characteristics are reviewed by sector and important supply issues are assessed. The appendix includes business profiles of major northern business centres such as Whitehorse, Yellowknife, Norman Wells, and Inuvik.

Download or read book Business Opportunities in Onshore Oil and Gas Exploration in the Northwest Territories written by T.J. Hawkings and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This booklet provides information on business opportunities resulting from Oil & Gas Exploration activities in the Northwest Territories. It is aimed at local entrepreneurs in communities close to oil and gas operations. It can also be used by individuals looking for information on employment opportunities associated with drilling and seismic operations. Five factors are critical to long term business success in Northern oil and gas operations. These are: 1) High quality and competitive service. 2) Aggressive marketing. 3) Location. 4) Knowledge of the requirements of oil companies. 5) Understanding the Exploration/Development Cycle. The first three of these factors can be controlled by local businesses. A better understanding of the last two factors will help Northern business people to make good decisions on whether to participate in opportunities resulting from oil and gas exploration programs. This booklet will help in this understanding. It begins with a discussion of the business opportunity followed by a description of the Exploration/Development Cycle. Awareness of the Cycle is key to taking advantage of the short term opportunities associated with exploration programs. Section 4.0 and 5.0 are the key sections of the booklet. They provide specific information on the business opportunities associated with seismic and drilling operations. The various phases of the operations are discussed and matched with the potential local requirements. A chart which summarizes the timing of an exploration project is provided in section 6.0. Section 7 includes a series of maps showing oil and gas activity in the Mackenzie Valley and southern NWT. This will further help the reader understand the exploration process, and also get some idea of the location and timing of anticipated activity. A brief description of the regulatory process of oil and gas exploration has been included to help give readers an appreciation of the steps an oil company goes through to carry out an exploration program"--ASTIS [online] database.

Book excerpt: First published in 1983, Offshore Oil is an early and prescient analysis of the prospects for oil and gas development off Canada's east coast. The book examines the potential of offshore oil to provide growth in Canadian industries. As development proceeds huge sums will be invested and oil companies' needs include platforms, drilling rigs, ships, plants and a host of smaller items such as drills, pumps, transformers and electronic equipment. This presents opportunities not only for traditional industries such as steel and shipbuilding but also for the high-technology sector. Offshore oil holds the prospect of energy self-sufficiency for Canada and of better times for the depressed Atlantic economy. But development of gas could also bring a "boom and bust" that damages the region's social and economic fabric. This book considers both possibilities.
