Book The Management of Enterprises in the People s Republic of China

Download or read book The Management of Enterprises in the People s Republic of China written by Anne S. Tsui and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2002-08-31 with total page 524 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With China's eminent entry into the World Trade Organization, past speculations of China becoming a world economic power in the 21st century is a reality with which few would disagree. We are witnessing the awakening of many sleepy giants, such as the successful reformed state-owned as well as township and village enterprises. We are also witnessing the birth and growth of a significant private sector, along with ever-increasing foreign investments. In this development process, there is a critical need to document and theorize about the management process by firms in this changing and dynamic context. The Management of Enterprises in the People's Republic of China aims to contribute to the knowledge base of management within the Chinese context. The book begins with a mapping of research on management in PRC, and offers theoretical insights for cross-context, institutional, and behavioral studies. It then reports the results of fourteen empirical studies of management issues in the PRC firms. The issues studied include SOE transformation, globalization, governance, employment relationships, managerial networks, corporate culture and leadership. Also included are studies on the knowledge management process and management team characteristics of high technology firms. The methods of study include large-scale surveys, case studies, and interviews. The contributors are international experts in Chinese management research. Finally, we offer executive perspectives on several successful firms operating in China through interviews with their CEOs.

Book excerpt: The West cannot afford to ignore China. Not only is China one of the few markets in the world that is still showing healthy signs of growth, but Chinese companies are increasingly coming out into the wider world and competing with Western firms on their own turf. China is the coming economic superpower of the Twenty-first-century, and now is the time to start understanding China and building relationships to it. This book aims to describe some features of the Chinese business environment and culture, including the origins and development of that culture, and introduce Western business people to some of the key features, as well as some of the less obvious ones. It offers cautionary tales and warnings of risk, along with advice on how the latter can be overcome. It breaks down a number of misconceptions about China and offers managers a more realistic view of management in China today.

Book Family Business in China Volume 1

Download or read book Family Business in China Volume 1 written by Ling Chen and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-11-30 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unlike other economies, family businesses in China are greatly affected by the derived Confucian culture, excessive marketization, as well as the seemingly endless institutional supervision by a transitional Chinese government. China has a strong historical legacy, devoted to patriarchal values and strong family-centered traditions. This volume explores the social foundations and historical legacies of families, business families, and family businesses in China. It begins with an overview of a household, family, and clan in ancient China before an examination of the economic, social, and cultural functions that the family system served in Ancient China as well as the four unique features that distinguish the family system in ancient China from those in western societies. It later discusses the evolution of the family system and the rise of family business before the establishment of the People’s Republic of China in 1949. Finally, it evaluates the family system before and after the “Open-up and Reform” in 1978. This interdisciplinary work, incorporating sociological, anthropological, and institutional contexts pertaining to China, offers researchers the first advanced perspective of the development of family firms in China.

Book China Business

Download or read book China Business written by Henry C. Steele and published by Chinese University Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For foreign business to succeed in China, it needs to be better informed of the challenges that China is faced with today. China was a centrally planned economy with very little international ties only three decades ago. Thus, it has to catch up for the lost years when there was neither opportunity to gain management experience nor any meaningful legal and regulatory framework to speak of. China is making up for lost time with unequalled energy and determination. Contributors in this book address a wide range of business issues through their research and present a glimpse on the complexity of doing business in China today. The book consists of four sections: the business environment; management issues; sales and marketing; international business. Contributors are from both business circles and the academia, who have witnessed not only progress but also the pain that has accompanied the path to a market economy.

Book Business Opportunities and Risks in China

Download or read book Business Opportunities and Risks in China written by Tracy Dathe and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-06-23 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rise of China poses a significant challenge to the existing, Western-dominated world economic order. The effectiveness of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) is contingent on a smooth transition of the world’s economic center toward the Asia-Pacific Region. For Western investors, the vast market opportunities can be tempting. However, the lack of experience and knowledge of international management in China – a country with radically different business rules and cultural background – poses a substantial risk. This book provides comprehensive insights into the fast-changing business world in China. Based on the authors’ theoretical knowledge and invaluable years of practical experience, it discusses the various options for doing business in China, with current examples that demonstrate how European SMEs can successfully position themselves between multinational companies and local competitors. It also highlights new opportunities arising from China’s international involvement (New Silk Road, RCEP) and addresses risk management for European SMEs operating in China. Moreover, it sheds light on how to form relationships of mutual trust between Chinese policymakers and their advisors/cooperation partners from abroad. Readers with an interest in doing business in China will find this book particularly valuable.

Book American Businesses in China

American businesses that have been successful in China, such as General Electric, Children's Television Workshop, Holiday Inn, DaimlerChrysler and the Foxboro Company, to name just a few, know how important a consideration for Chinese culture is in business operations. Their efforts in China are profiled in this work to serve as case studies for others interested in doing business in China. This book also examines the Chinese worldview, a fusion of Confucianism, Taoism, Buddhism and communism, and the effects of globalization on business ventures. It also considers the changing nature of Chinese consumerism, highlighting significant differences between urban and rural populations and a distinctive generational divide. It ends by offering some general conclusions as well as suggestions for those interested in doing business in China.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rapid and continuing development of the Chinese economy and its markets has made business with China an integral component of the strategies of countless foreign companies, regardless of their size or form. However, in order to turn opportunities into successful enterprises, managers need a practical guide on the legal aspects of conducting business in China, and on the strategies for effectively circumventing unnecessary risks while simultaneously using the legal system to strengthen operations and protect interests. This remarkable book provides the necessary insight and guidance to devise a corporate strategy, and to tackle issues relating to common aspects of doing business with Chinese counterparts, investing in a Chinese enterprise, and engaging in business operations there. Drawing on expertise gained during eight years in China serving the legal needs of foreign companies, the author shows how many of the mistakes that foreign companies make can easily be avoided by conducting a proper due diligence and understanding how applicable laws work in practice. He clearly describes the opportunities and pitfalls exposed as a foreign investor engages with such elements of business in China as the following: negotiating a detailed written contract; performing a legal and commercial due diligence on a prospective partner; resolving disputes through negotiation, arbitration or litigation; establishing and enforcing trademarks, patents and other intellectual property rights; investing in China; considering the joint venture structure; expanding through a merger or acquisition; restructuring or liquidating an operation; designing and implementing effective corporate governance; retaining, managing and terminating employees; arranging funds into and out of China; ensuring both tax efficiency and tax compliance; and avoiding criminal liabilities in the course of doing business. Whether seeking to source from China or to establish manufacturing facilities in China to produce for export, to sell products or services on the domestic market, or even just to act as a conduit between China and the outside world, business managers and their counsel from all over the globe and across all industries will benefit enormously from this deeply informed, insightful, and practical guide
