Book The Economics of Distribution

Download or read book The Economics of Distribution written by John A. Hobson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-12 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Economics of Distribution This work endeavours to construct an intelligible, self-consistent theory of Distribution by means of an analysis of those processes of bargaining through which economic distribution is actually conducted, the results of industrial cooperation being apportioned to the owners of the factors of production in the several stages of production. The chief difficulty lies in coordinating the different factors of production, so as to bring the payments made respectively for the use of land, labour, and capital under a common law of price, and in showing that the same economic forces which determine the market and normal prices of commodities are applicable to the sale of all these uses of the factors of production. The extension to all these cases of the terminology and modes of measurement hitherto confined to land, or extended tentatively and by analogy to certain other factors, involves a complete restatement of some of the problems of wages and interest. Book The Economics of Retailing and Distribution

Download or read book The Economics of Retailing and Distribution written by Roger R. Betancourt and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2005-01-01 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book should become a standard reference in the field. . . It combines rigorous modeling with sophisticated econometrics and includes telling examples to illustrate general principles. Dennis C. Mueller, University of Vienna, Austria This book provides a uniform and coherent approach to the analysis of distribution systems in general and retail systems in particular. It develops the fundamentals of retail demand and supply, and demonstrates how the provision of distribution services is a principal determinant of economic outcomes in retail exchanges for both retailers and their customers, as well as for other agents such as suppliers and franchisors. The author integrates the existing literature with new applications to provide novel insights into the multi-product nature of retailing, the service aspects of packaging, and the evolution of retail formats such as supermarkets, non-store retailers (including the Internet) and shopping centers. He illustrates how the complementarity that underlies retail activities leads to lower average prices for customers. This integrative process also brings out the role of distribution services as mechanisms to exercise economic power. This is evident not only in channels of distribution but in the evolution of Wal-Mart and the development of franchise contracts. The author also identifies the crucial differences between the retailing of goods and the retailing of services. This impressive volume skilfully integrates conceptual, theoretical and empirical research to analyse critical issues in the economics of retailing and distribution. It will be required reading for academics and professional economists interested in industrial organization, marketing, applied microeconomics and business.

Download or read book Economic Distribution written by Fouad Sabry and published by One Billion Knowledgeable. This book was released on 2023-11-06 with total page 772 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is Economic Distribution In the field of economics, "distribution" refers to the method by which total output, revenue, or wealth is divided up among individuals or among the various components of production. Each unit of output is equivalent to one unit of revenue, according to the general theory as well as specific examples such as the National revenue and Product Accounts of the United States. The classification of factor incomes and the measurement of their respective shares, as in national Income, are two of the many applications of national accounts. Adjustments to the national accounts or other data sources are typically utilized when the focus of an investigation is on the income of individuals or families. In this context, researchers frequently focus their attention on the percentage of total income that is received by the top x percent of households, the next x percent of households, and so on, as well as the factors that may influence those percentages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Problems in Market Distribution: Illustrating the Application of a Basic Philosophy of Business This reprint of "Some Problems in Market Distribution" from the Quarterly Journal of Economics for August, 1912, I am preceding with an introductory chapter, "The Nature and Relations of Business Activities." As all the activities of business are interdependent and all the problems of business arise out of the relations of these interdependent activities, this added matter may aid the reader by placing the activities of distribution in their relation to all the other activities of business. Many of the ideas and even the forms of expression in this small book have come from those with whom I have been associated at Harvard University and in the editorial offices of the magazines System and Factory. It would be difficult to make an adequate statement of my obligation to Dean Edwin Francis Gay of the Graduate School of Business Administration, Harvard University. Without his cooperation - and I use the word in its broadest meaning - this book and the larger one, An Approach to Business Problems, soon to follow it, could hardly have been possible. Book Handbook on the Economics of Retailing and Distribution

Download or read book Handbook on the Economics of Retailing and Distribution written by Emek Basker and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2016-01-29 with total page 513 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Handbook explores and critically examines current research in economics and marketing science on key issues in retailing and distribution. Providing a rich perspective for the discussion of public policy, contributions from several disciplines and continents range from the history of chains and the impact of multinational retailers on international trade patterns to US merger policy in the retail context, the rise of the Internet, and consumer-to-consumer sales. The chapters address methodological issues such as the structural estimation of entry games between retailers, productivity measurement when both inputs and output are not fully observable, and demand estimation with variable assortment. Policy issues explored include mergers, zoning, and the regulation of buyer power, while other chapters address some of the recent exciting developments in technology, retail formats, and data availability. The book goes on to study the changes in online retailing and ‘big data’, and to examine competition in specific retail sectors including gasoline stations, automobile dealerships, supermarkets, and ‘big box’ retail. This state-of-the-art Handbook is an essential reference for students and academics of economics and marketing science, and offers an outsider’s perspective to specialists in operations research, data analytics, geography, and sociology.

Book The Marginal Productivity Theory of Distribution

Download or read book The Marginal Productivity Theory of Distribution written by John Pullen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2009-06-26 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Marginal Productivity Theory of Distribution (MPTD) claims that in a free-market economy the demand for a factor of production will depend upon its marginal product – where "marginal product" is defined as the change in total product that is caused by, or that follows, the addition or subtraction of the marginal unit of the factor used in the production process, with all other inputs held constant. From its inception in the early nineteenth century the MPTD has been claimed by some economists to be a solution to the ethical problem of distributive justice, i.e. to be a means of determining fairness in wages, profits, interest and rent. Other economists have rejected this ethical claim, but have seen the MPTD as a valid demand-side criterion in the determination of equilibrium and efficiency. This book argues that the MPTD is valid, neither as a normative theory of social justice, nor as a positive law of economics. It suggests that economics is yet to develop a satisfactory theory of distribution that is scientific in the quantitative or mathematical sense. Through a survey of the origin and subsequent evolution of the MPTD in the writings of over 50 contributors over 150 years, John Pullen presents a critical history of the concept. The book begins by examining the conceptual tools that have been deployed to facilitate this analysis of past contributions to the MPTD and then looks at various economists and their contribution to the debate including its supporters such as Wicksteed, Marshall, Wicksell and Stigler, and its critics such as Pareto, Hobson, Edgeworth, Adriance and Cassel.

Book The Economics of Artificial Intelligence

Download or read book The Economics of Artificial Intelligence written by Ajay Agrawal and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2019-05-22 with total page 643 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in artificial intelligence (AI) highlight the potential of this technology to affect productivity, growth, inequality, market power, innovation, and employment. This volume seeks to set the agenda for economic research on the impact of AI. It covers four broad themes: AI as a general purpose technology; the relationships between AI, growth, jobs, and inequality; regulatory responses to changes brought on by AI; and the effects of AI on the way economic research is conducted. It explores the economic influence of machine learning, the branch of computational statistics that has driven much of the recent excitement around AI, as well as the economic impact of robotics and automation and the potential economic consequences of a still-hypothetical artificial general intelligence. The volume provides frameworks for understanding the economic impact of AI and identifies a number of open research questions. Book The Economics of Knowledge Generation and Distribution

Download or read book The Economics of Knowledge Generation and Distribution written by Pier Paolo Patrucco and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-09-25 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contemporary capitalistic systems have been undergoing profound transformations determined by the transition towards the so-called knowledge based economy, i.e. a competitive system based on the capabilities firms have to create, use and circulate knowledge. These transformations concern both the characteristics of productive and innovative processes, and the resources used in these activities. This book captures these changes, where traditional R&D investments undertaken internally by firms are increasingly and strategically complemented by external sources of innovation and new knowledge. Collaborations between firms, and between firms and other organizations, as well as the mobility of human capital, are strategic processes in order to share and circulate knowledge and competencies. They are also key determinants in the creation of new knowledge and innovation, and ultimately in growth dynamics. The circulation and distribution of knowledge is now a key input in the production of knowledge. Knowledge and innovation are understood as the result of collective and interactive processes at the system level, and less at the micro level. In other words, new knowledge production is less and less the result of individualistic behaviours of the firms and much more the effect of explicit and pro-active interactions and transactions put in place by local networks of innovators. In this perspective, economic space is much more defined by the quality of the interactions among actors rather than by their mere technological, sectoral or geographical proximity. This book brings together new conceptual and empirical contributions and blends the analysis of the technological and geographical spaces in which innovation and knowledge are produced.
