Book Business and Government in Canada

Download or read book Business and Government in Canada written by Jeffrey Roy and published by University of Ottawa Press. This book was released on 2007-09-06 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Boundaries between business and government are increasingly fluid and often transcended. Yet it remains important to acknowledge and make appropriate use of the fundamental differences between these sectors. Five areas that offer the most critical challenges to business and government in Canada today are corporate governance, lobbying and influence, security and privacy, public-private partnerships, and geography and development. This book is an exploration of the systemic dynamics of the inter-sectoral governance that shape the collective performance of Canada's national jurisdiction. Three perspectives of the relational dynamics between business and government, drawn from leading Canadian scholars, are adopted in order to frame the examination of independence, influence, and interdependence. This book makes a case for the advancement of “virtuous hybrids,” while pointing out the challenges that remain in terms of the formation and successful performance of such hybrids in Canada, a challenge that calls for political leadership as well as social learning. An informed and engaged public, wearing multiple hats (i.e. as voter, shareholder, employee, activist etc.) would be the ultimate arbiter of sectoral and collective performance.

Book excerpt: The Canadian economy is undergoing profound and continuous structural changes that are re-ordering not only the basis of economic activity in this country, but also the relationships between business, labour and government. The process of economic restructuring requires changes in institutions and organizations to make an effective transition to a new economic environment. This report is a recognition that we have to search for better ways of working together. This report aims to provide advice to governments on how best they can promote and support business-labour approaches to economic restructuring. The report is organized into two main parts. The first section outlines a set of general principles developed by the CLMPC Economic Restructuring Committee common to successful joint business-labour initiatives. The second part puts forth a set of 12 recommendations on the roles of government in supporting business-labour approaches to economic restructuring.

Book Uneasy Partnership

Download or read book Uneasy Partnership written by Geoffrey Hale and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2018-01-25 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Canadian government's pursuit of economic growth is central to its economic policy and to the nature of its relationship with the business community. The government depends on business investment for economic growth vital to the prosperity of citizens, the generation of tax revenues, and enough public satisfaction to win re-election. Businesses depend on the government for stable sets of rules that are necessary for success. They often look to governments for protection against threats to their well-being and for assistance in competing with other businesses. In this new edition of Uneasy Partnership, Geoffrey Hale examines the interdependent relationship between Canadian governments and businesses, considering the political role of the government in the economy and what effect this has on the business environment. Hale provides an overview of the historical dimensions of Canada's political economy and relations between government and business, giving readers background to consider topics such as corporate power, the implications of Canada's economic structure, regional economic differences, and the role of interest groups in political and policy processes, among others. In a thoughtful and well-researched style, Hale lays out how the partnership between business and government in Canada is an uneasy one--and one whose capacity to adapt to ongoing changes is essential in an uncertain world."--

Book Government Limited

Download or read book Government Limited written by John Calvert and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the back cover: Government Limited challenges the view that big government is responsible for Canada's economic crisis. The fundamental problem with government, according to authro John Calvert, has been its subordination to business interests. This has resulted in the adoption of regressive social and economic policies which have sacrificed the interests of ordinary Canadians to placate the insatiable demands of the corporate sector. Calvert is no apologist for existing governments. He holds that the mismanagement of the public sector by the pro-business governments has resulted in widespread alienation among citizens towards public programs....The solution to Canada's economic crisis and to the deteriorating financial situation of governments lies in the adoption of a fundamentally different approaclh to economic policy. Calvert puts forward a controversial 10-point Alternative Economic Strategy which he believes can form the basis of this approach.
