Book Networked Regionalism as Conflict Management

Download or read book Networked Regionalism as Conflict Management written by Anna Ohanyan and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2015-04-15 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most regions of the world are plagued by conflicts that are made insoluble by a confluence of complex threads from history, geography, politics, and culture. These "frozen conflicts" defy conflict management interventions by both internal and external agents and institutions. Worse, they constantly threaten to extend beyond their local geographies, as in the terrorist bombings in Boston by ethnic Chechens, or to escalate from skirmishes to full-scale war, as in Nagorno-Karabakh. Consequently, such conflicts cry out for alternative approaches to the classic, state-focused, and sovereignty-based conflict management models that are practiced in traditional diplomacy—which most often produce rather short-term, ad hoc, fragmented interventions and outcomes. Drawing upon the cases of the South Caucasus, the Western Balkans, Central America, South East Asia, and Northern Ireland, Networked Regionalism as Conflict Management offers a theoretical and practical solution to this impasse by arguing for regional collective interventions that involve a long-term reengineering of existing conflict management infrastructure on the ground. Such approaches have been attracting the attention of scholars and practitioners alike yet, thus far, these concepts have rarely involved more than simple prescriptions for regional cooperation between grassroots actors and traditional diplomacy. Specifically, says Anna Ohanyan, only the cultivation and establishment of regional peace systems can provide an effective path toward conflict management in these standoffs in such intractably divided regions.

Book Business Administration Its Models in War Statecraft and Science

Download or read book Business Administration Its Models in War Statecraft and Science written by Edw; D. Jones and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-15 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Business Administration Its Models in War, Statecraft, and Science Confident that administration of manufacturing and operating companies under modern conditions is developing into a new profession, Professor Jones has sought its scientific principles by a remarkable study of the older professions with which it is most closely allied. His argument is, briefly: First - That success in dealing with men and affairs depends upon certain basic propositions and laws which can be discovered by studying the work of successful administrators; Second - That the rules and methods followed by masters of business and finance are usually deliberately hidden, and there are no records throwing clear, full light on their lives and acts; Third - That leaders in statecraft, war, and science, on the contrary, are figures of world interest whose careers and practice are illuminated fully and searchingly by public and private records, correspondence, personal reminiscences, and even petty gossip. From such data Professor Jones has analyzed definite primary principles of administration. In history and the biographies of military conquerors, diplomats, and scientists, he finds the elementary rules of success. Close systematic study of scientific management has expended its first force on machines and processes. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book Afghanistan Rising written by Faiz Ahmed and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2017-11-06 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Debunking conventional narratives of Afghanistan as a perennial war zone and the rule of law as a secular-liberal monopoly, Faiz Ahmed presents a vibrant account of the first Muslim-majority country to gain independence, codify its own laws, and ratify a constitution after the fall of the Ottoman Empire. Afghanistan Rising illustrates how turn-of-the-twentieth-century Kabul--far from being a landlocked wilderness or remote frontier--became a magnet for itinerant scholars and statesmen shuttling between Ottoman and British imperial domains. Tracing the country's longstanding but often ignored scholarly and educational ties to Baghdad, Damascus, and Istanbul as well as greater Delhi and Lahore, Ahmed explains how the court of Kabul attracted thinkers eager to craft a modern state within the interpretive traditions of Islamic law and ethics, or shariʿa, and international norms of legality. From Turkish lawyers and Arab officers to Pashtun clerics and Indian bureaucrats, this rich narrative focuses on encounters between divergent streams of modern Muslim thought and politics, beginning with the Sublime Porte's first mission to Afghanistan in 1877 and concluding with the collapse of Ottoman rule after World War I. By unearthing a lost history behind Afghanistan's founding national charter, Ahmed shows how debates today on Islam, governance, and the rule of law have deep roots in a beleaguered land. Based on archival research in six countries and as many languages, Afghanistan Rising rediscovers a time when Kabul stood proudly as a center of constitutional politics, Muslim cosmopolitanism, and contested visions of reform in the greater Islamicate world.

Book The Scientific Way of Warfare

Download or read book The Scientific Way of Warfare written by Antoine J. Bousquet and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2022-06-15 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bousquet's landmark book examines the impact of key technologies and scientific ideas on the theory and practice of warfare and the handling of the perennial tension between order and chaos on the battlefield. Spanning the entire modern era, from the Scientific Revolution to the present, it offers a systematic account of modern warfare as the constitution of increasingly complex assemblages of bodies and machines whose integration rests upon a military assimilation of scientific thought. Reflecting the pervasive influence of scientific conceptual frameworks upon warfare, modern armies have been successively organised by reference to the paradigmatic technologies of the clock, engine, computer, and network. Conversely, major scientific developments and technological breakthroughs have become intertwined with the experience of war, especially since the Second World War's unprecedented mobilisation of scientific rationality and technical expertise. This increasingly tight symbiosis between science, technology, and war is at the heart of both the tremendous powers and enduring pathologies displayed by the contemporary military machine. In this new and revised edition, Bousquet extends the analysis to encompass the latest developments in the scientific way of warfare in the midst of renewed great power competition and a wave of technological innovation in artificial intelligence and robotics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1950, when he commissioned the first edition of The Armed Forces Officer, Secretary of Defense George C. Marshall told its author, S.L.A. Marshall, that "American military officers, of whatever service, should share common ground ethically and morally." In this new edition, the authors methodically explore that common ground, reflecting on the basics of the Profession of Arms, and the officer's special place and distinctive obligations within that profession and especially to the Constitution.
