Book Feature Writing

Download or read book Feature Writing written by N. MEERA RAGHAVENDRA RAO and published by PHI Learning Pvt. Ltd.. This book was released on 2012-09-12 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If we ask the lay readers why they read newspapers, the obvious answer would be to get news. However, what keeps the newspaper endearing and, in a way, enduring are the longer stories about people behind the news, about the humorous everyday experiences we all have, or the closer look at someone and the unexpected surprises we get in the process. In short, we call these features. In this substantially revised book on Feature Writing, the author with her vast experience discusses various aspects of Feature Writing. She focuses on different types of features found in newspapers—Humour and Satire, Brights, Human Interest Features, Travel Features and News Features—and illustrates each of these. In addition, she provides a detailed description of Profiles, Interviews, and Online Features with examples, and gives a clear analysis of Feature Writing Techniques. Intended as a text for students offering courses in Journalism, this book would also be extremely useful for freelance writers, and anyone who has a flair for writing. What is New to THE SECOND Edition Includes two new chapters on Obituary and Tribute, and Sports and new sections such as Blogs and Professionalism in Journalism. Provides more illustrations culled from recent newspapers. Gives explanatory notes on some key words used in the book, and a section on Vocabulary. What the Reviewers Say In this delightful book on FW [Feature Writing], Meera Raghavendra Rao brings home to us that writing a story or a novel is one way of discovering sequence in experience, of stumbling upon cause and effect in the happenings of a writer’s own life. In my view Meera Raghavendra Rao’s book on FW is an exceptionally good and useful book not only for all students of Journalism but also for all writers interested in FW. —V. Sundaram, News Today The author has used instances from her career spanning more than two decades to illustrate various situations in this book. —Deccan Chronicle The book is a rather exhaustive guide on ways to tell a feature story. Among the other pluses is the Indianness permeating the book—most sample articles are home-brewn. —The Hindu, Metroplus Weekend

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new Beginner Book about manic skiing squirrels—by J. Hamilton Ray with illustrations by Pascal Lemaitre—has the feeling of an old classic read-aloud. "Nobody knew how the mania grew. First there was one, and then there were two. Three more came gliding from under the trees. LOOK! On the hill. Those are squirrels on skis! Below lay the town, snow-covered and still. Not a sound could be heard. All was silent, until . . . Swwwishhhh swooped the skiers, all dressed for play. Eighty-five squirrels and more on the way!" As you can imagine, the townsfolk are NOT amused. Can intrepid reporter Sally Sue Breeze find out where the squirrels are getting their skis-and make them stop skiing long enough to eat lunch-before pest-control guy Stanley Powers sucks them up in his vacuum device? (Don't worry—Sally triumphs in a most unexpected way.) With delightfully understated, funny illustrations by Pascal Lemaitre, this is the perfect book for beginning readers to curl up and chill out with on a snow day—or any day! Originally created by Dr. Seuss, Beginner Books encourage children to read all by themselves, with simple words and illustrations that give clues to their meaning.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If you know me, you know about my love of the critters that come visit me almost every day. Of course, I am closest to my sweet friend, “Little squirrel” that visits me every night at 5:00pm for his peanuts. The minute he hears me shake the peanut bag he knows it is “din din” time and all but trips over his own little paws to get to the tree where I place the peanuts on a concrete block that sits at the bottom of his tree! He loves watching me as much as I enjoy watching him! I also have 2 feral cats; a little gray kitten and a big ole’ long haired black cat with a white chest that looks very handsome and formal in his “tuxedo” when he comes to eat each day. He always looks like he is bored with life when he looks at me with his large deep set orange eyes. Little gray kitten just loves picking on him too! These two are so funny! They always keep me amused. Oh! I have the cutest bunny ever that hops through my side yard every day (especially when we plant our garden!). My bunny is so adorable! He looks just like a precious brown and white Easter Bunny! And I can’t forget my redheaded woodpecker. He is HUGE! He is either up in a tree pecking on the bark, or working on the tree stump in our side yard; helping us take it to the ground. He is a handy fellow to have around! With this being said, the sweet little characters in my book are written after real ones that visit me each day in my yard. They make my front porch my happy place! I hope you enjoy reading “OH My Little Squirrel” and following my Little squirrel’s adventures as much as I enjoyed writing about them!

Americans pour 300 million gallons of gas and 1 billion hours every year into mowing their lawns, not to mention 70 million pounds of pesticides and $40 billion for lawn upkeep. No Wonder the anti-lawn movement is thriving, as today's eco-conscious consumers realize that their traditional lawns are water-hogging, chemical-ridden, maintenance-intensive burdens. Lawn Gone!, from award-winning gardening blogger Pam Penick, is the first basic introduction to low-water, easy-care lawn alternatives for beginning gardeners, written in a friendly style with an approachable package. It covers all the available time-saving options: alternative grasses, ground cover plants, artificial turf, hardscaping, mulch, and more. • Release : 2009-10
  • ISBN : 144018416X

Download or read book Dr Judittle written by W. Etheredge Judean W. Etheredge and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2009-10 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author has always talked to animals and they have communicated with her but not in the traditional Dr. Dolittle way. From early childhood she has never been without an animal to cherish. In this book, she relates humorously some of her experiences in raising and caring for animals. Dr. Judittle is candid in expressing her lack of knowledge in animal care which adds to the hilarity in some of her encounters with unpredictable animals. From a runaway chipmunk to the hair tingling growl of a baby gray fox, she finds a way to relate to these creatures. While rescuing animals, she has crawled through attics, slithered under cars, and paddled through murky waters. These true tales of animal adventures focus on the life and death of animals, their unconditional love and sometimes laughter, their inspirational presence, and their ridiculous behavior. It also points to the God of creation who uses animals in unimaginable ways to minister to mankind.
