Book Bushveldt Carbineers

Download or read book Bushveldt Carbineers written by George Witton and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A war without pity on the South African veldt George Witton was a member of the Bushveldt Carbineers-a mounted, highly mobile unit trained to hunt down its Boer counterparts of the Commandos during the Boer War at the turn of the 20th century. Theirs was no 'gentleman's war' which took account of for fair play and the rules of war-it was a 'kill or be killed' existence of ambushes, night attacks and summary executions in which neither side could claim non-participation. War became a personal business for Witton and his fellow Carbineers-Morant and Handcock-as brother officers were found murdered and brutalised and prisoners were caught bearing their personal effects. Matters came to a head with the infamous courts-marshal of some of the Bushveldt Carbineers and the execution of some and imprisonment of others in a scandal that rocked the British Empire and struck to the core of the relationship between the mother country and one of its most loyal colonies.

Download or read book Scapegoats of the Empire written by George Witton and published by DigiCat. This book was released on 2023-11-20 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scapegoats of the Empire is an autobiography by George Witton. Witton was a lieutenant in the Bushveldt Carbineers in the Boer War in South Africa during the early 20th century. Excerpt: "Life in camp at Beira was almost a repetition of Langwarrin, being principally occupied in attending to and exercising the horses. On my arrival in camp I was instructed by Captain Dallimore to act as squadron-quartermaster-sergeant; my duties were to see that rations and forage were drawn daily and all camp equipment kept in order. Occasionally I went out on the veldt when exercising the horses; there appeared to be plenty of game about, and whenever a small buck rose up close to us there would be a hue-and-cry after it. Sometimes we would succeed in running it down in the long grass."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the true story of three Australian army officers and the events that led to a murder trial during Britain's Boer War in the 1880's. Its author, George Witton, was one of those officers serving with the Bushveldt Carbineers, an irregular counterinsurgency regiment set up to fight the Boer guerrilla units on their own level. Shortly before Witton joined his detachment of the Carbineers, its commander, Captain Hunt, was killed and his body apparently abused by the Boers. Lt. Harry "Breaker" Morant took over command. Bereaved over the death and mutilation of his senior officer and close friend, Morant decided to follow Hunt's earlier orders to execute prisoners, including some who took part in Hunt's death. However, Lord Kitchener, the commanding British general, had issued orders not to take Boer prisoners. Witton never knew Hunt, and barely knew Morant and Lt. Peter Handcock (also an officer with the Carbineers) when prisoner executions took place. Capt. Hunt allegedly ordered his men to shoot prisoners, saying the order came from as far up as Kitchener. But, the General's testimony was never admitted into evidence, and he was conveniently out of the country when the three men's verdicts were handed down. With quotes from pre-trial and court martial testimony, Witton sets forth his version of the facts in plain, unelaborated writing.

Provocative and opinionated, this record attempts to correct the historical record.

Book Reflections on War Diplomacy Human Rights and Liberalism

Download or read book Reflections on War Diplomacy Human Rights and Liberalism written by Adam Hughes Henry and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2020-12-01 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For most people, the idea that extremist ideologies glorify themselves through warfare, and commit crimes against humanity and genocide, is the natural extension of their moral and philosophical failings. As this volume outlines, liberal democracies such as Australia, and others, also glorify in war and they may also, at various times, engage in, support, or turn a blind eye to crimes against humanity or genocide. However, liberal democracies such as Australia, the US, and the UK, among others, routinely present themselves as arbiters of liberal values, defenders of human rights, and guardians of virtue. This book explores the obvious contradiction between the ideals of liberalism and how liberal democracies ignore, and at times even justify, their failure to uphold the principles they espouse.

Book British Foreign Policy and the Anglican Church

Download or read book British Foreign Policy and the Anglican Church written by Timothy Blewett and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-08-27 with total page 131 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whilst the views of leaders within the Church of England are frequently canvassed during periods of national crisis, little attention has been devoted to finding out whether there are Church perspectives on contemporary foreign policy issues. The Church of England has not been regarded as an actor with a strong input into international affairs, preferring to speak out on domestic and individual issues. Yet world politics present fundamental ethical dilemmas which call for careful deliberation and the Church has a role to play both in shaping the debate and arguing for particular policy directions. To what extent is national policy shaped by underlying Christian values. Do the campaigning efforts of faith groups really exert influence and guide the development of state policy? This book seeks to elucidate whether there are particular Christian perspectives on the role that Great Britain should play in the world today. It investigates the role that the Church of England has played in contemporary foreign policy issues: including the use of force - intervention, counter-terrorism and arms sales - and overseas trade, aid and debt forgiveness. The book brings together senior individuals from within the Church, academia and non-governmental organisations to investigate these various ethical dilemmas.

Book The Big Book of Australia s War Stories

Download or read book The Big Book of Australia s War Stories written by Jim Haynes and published by Allen & Unwin. This book was released on 2019-11-05 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A unique collection of poignant, horrific, sad and sometimes dryly humorous stories and tales about wartime experiences of Australian's on the front lines, in the air and on the sea. 'The bravest thing God ever made,' said a British officer of the insubordinate Aussies at Gallipoli. And before the Normandy invasion, Field Marshal Montgomery's chief of staff remarked, 'I only wish we had the Australian 9th Division with us this morning'. But there is more to the Australian experience of war than heroic endeavour and bravery. Jim Haynes has rediscovered stories that are as harrowing as they are uplifting, as strange as they are brutal and as heart-breaking as they are humorous. From Federation to the Vietnam War, from our first VC winner to our hundredth, this sweeping overview of Australia's military adventures both overseas and at home is a guide to understanding how this nation's role in the twentieth century's major conflicts unfolded as each war ebbed and flowed. These stories have formed Australia's collective memory of war. Some battles and campaigns are household names, although their historical significance may have been lost. Others are barely remembered now but are part of our history and deserve to be retold. These are the accounts, recollections and legends that explain Australia's wartime reputation. They demonstrate the extraordinary courage, resilience, stoic humour, personal heroism and sacrifice that created the mythology of the Aussie 'digger' - the soldiers, sailors, nurses and flyers who did things their own way and earned the undying respect of both their allies and their enemies.
