Book Architecture and Globalisation in the Persian Gulf Region

Download or read book Architecture and Globalisation in the Persian Gulf Region written by Nasser Golzari and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-15 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book ever to examine the architecture and urbanism of the Persian Gulf as a complete entity, dealing equally with conditions on the eastern Iranian shoreline as in Arabic countries on the western side. By inviting a range of architects and scholars to write about historical and contemporary influences on 14 cities along both Gulf coastlines, the book traces the changes in architecture and human settlement in relation to environmental factors and particularity of place. It provides an innovative contribution to the study of architecture and globalisation through a detailed investigation of this particular region, investigating how buildings and cities are being shaped as a result. A set of thematic essays at the end offer important insights into issues of globalisation, urbanism and environmental design, drawing from the experience of the Persian Gulf. The outcome is a unique record of the Gulf in the early-21st century at a point when global capitalism is making major inroads and yet questions of architectural design, climate change, ecological sustainability, cultural identity and so-called 'Facebook Democracy' are likewise shaking up the Middle Eastern region. The book thus offers a fresh reading of the architecture and urbanism of a fascinating and often contradictory region, while also showing how globalisation can be analysed in a more engaged and integrated manner.

Book Nuclear nonproliferation and safety concerns with the International Atomic Energy Agency s technical cooperation program report to Congressional requesters

Download or read book Nuclear nonproliferation and safety concerns with the International Atomic Energy Agency s technical cooperation program report to Congressional requesters written by and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 1997 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has the dual role of promoting the peaceful uses of nuclear energy and verifying that nuclear materials under its supervision are not diverted to military purposes (safeguards). Since 1958, in promoting the peaceful uses of nuclear energy through its technical cooperation program, IAEA has provided technical assistance to its member states by supplying equipment, expert services, and training that support the upgrading or establishment of nuclear techniques and facilities. Although the United States does not receive technical assistance, it has been the leading financial donor to IAEA'5 technical cooperation program. In March 1997, we reported to you on IAEA's technical assistance for Cuba, including assistance for the partially completed Cuban nuclear power reactors whose construction is suspended. As requested, this report examines (1) the purpose and effectiveness of IAEA's technical cooperation program, (2) the cost of U.S. participation in IAEA'5 technical cooperation program, and (3) whether the United States ensures that the activities of IAEA's technical cooperation program do not conflict with U.S. nuclear nonproliferation and safety goals.

Book Indonesia and Iran s Nuclear Issue

Download or read book Indonesia and Iran s Nuclear Issue written by Indriana Kartini and published by Yayasan Obor Indonesia. This book was released on 2005 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Psy-war" between Teheran and Washington in the context of Iranian nuclear issue has created the political escalation in the Middle East. The international community concerns about the US intention to attack Iran. Although, the pre-emptive strike doctrine is not a brand new doctrine in the US foreign policy, it is implied by Bush administration intensively. In fact, the implementation of the doctrine does not bring about a world peace. Otherwise, it is a threat to international security. In the case of Iran, Indonesia certainly has t oanswer the international call for standing together again US intention to attack Iran. When we concern nuclear issue on Iran, our mind actually realizes that the issue remains to be a high controversial problem. The judgement of Iran's nuclear power for a civilian purpose has t obe maintained under international agreement. Beyond that purposes, a country could develop a nuclear power for non-civilian purposes. For the later purposes, the international community must take a serious consideration on it.

Book Social Theory and Regional Studies in the Global Age

Download or read book Social Theory and Regional Studies in the Global Age written by Saïd Amir Arjomand and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2014-05-19 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this pioneering volume, leading international scholars argue for the development of a new approach to social theory that draws on regional studies for the conduct of comparative analysis in the global age. Social Theory and Regional Studies in the Global Age moves beyond facile generalizations based on the historical experience of modernization in the West by highlighting differences rather than similarities and contrasts rather than commonalities, and by examining civilizational processes and culturally specific developmental patterns distinctive of different world regions. Essays combine comparative and historical sociology with civilizational analysis and the study of multiple and alternative modernities. Different patterns of modernization are compared within the framework of global/local compressed communication and interaction that results from globalization. The introductory chapter puts the present effort in the context of the seminal work of three generations of comparative sociologists, and what follows is a penetrating analysis of modernization and globality, opening the way for rectifying the erasure of the historical experience of a very sizeable portion of humankind from the foundation of social theory.

Book Nuclear Iran The Birth of an Atomic State

Download or read book Nuclear Iran The Birth of an Atomic State written by David Patrikarakos and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2020-12-17 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Iranian nuclear crisis has dominated world politics since the beginning of the century, with the country now facing increasing diplomatic isolation, talk of military strikes against its nuclear facilities and a disastrous Middle East war. What is Iran's nuclear programme all about? What is its genesis? There is little real understanding of Iran's nuclear programme, in particular its history, which is now over fifty years old. This ground-breaking book is unprecedented in its scope. It argues that the history of Iran's nuclear programme and the modern history of the country itself are irretrievably linked, and only by understanding one can we understand the other. From the programme's beginnings under the Shah of Iran, the book details the central role of the US in the birth of nuclear Iran, and, through the relationship between the programme's founder and the Shah of Iran himself, the role that nuclear weapons have played in the programme since the beginning. The author's unique access to 'the father' of Iran's nuclear programme, as well as to key scientific personnel under the early Islamic Republic and to senior Iranian and Western officials at the centre of today's negotiations, sheds new light on the uranium enrichment programme that lies at the heart of global concerns. What emerges is a programme that has, for a variety of reasons, a deep resonance to Iran. This is why it has persisted with it for over half a century in the face of such widespread opposition. Drawing on years of research across the world, David Patrikarakos has produced the most comprehensive examination of Iran's nuclear programme - in all its forms to date.

Book excerpt: Bringing together historians of US foreign relations and scholars of Iranian studies, American-Iranian Dialogues examines the cultural connections between Americans and Iranians from the constitutional period of the 1890s through to the start of the White Revolution in the 1960s. Taking an innovative cultural approach, chapters are centred around major themes in American-Iranian encounters and cultural exchange throughout this period, including stories of origin, cultural representations, nationalism and discourses on development. Expert contributors draw together different strands of US-Iranian relations to discuss a range of path-breaking topics such as the history of education, heritage exchange, oil development and the often-overlooked interactions between American and Iranian non-state actors. Through exploring the understudied cultural dimensions of US-Iranian relations, this book will be essential reading for students and scholars interested in American history, international history, Iranian studies and Middle Eastern studies.
