Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bush-Fruits Large areas of some Of the bush-fruits are grown at times, but their more important place is in diversified fruit growing. Under exceptional conditions, with an assured market at hand, the growing Of large areas of a single fruit may be wise, but under normal conditions it is likely to be fraught with disappointment. The production and consumption Of strawberries is nearly or quite as great now as ever, but the tendency is apparently away from larger areas, the total product being grown by a much larger number Of men, most Of whom supply the de mands of their own locality, rather than depend on the wider wholesale markets Of the country. This tendency is doubtless wise, for the home market is Often the best. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book Bush Fruit Culture in California Classic Reprint written by Arthur Howard Hendrickson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bush Fruit Culture in California Bush fruits, especially the brambles, or fruits of the raspberry and blackberry type (see frontispiece), are grown in nearly all parts of California. The plantings vary from the few bushes cultivated for home use to plantations in which several hundred acres may be devoted to the production of enough berries to supply both local and distant markets with fresh fruit and allow a considerable portion of the surplus to be canned. Nearly all of the bush fruits are adapted to California soil and climatic conditions. Although some of the sorts are not grown extensively in the hot, dry sections of the state, even these may be grown in home gardens by judicious handling. With a succession of varieties, berries for the table may be produced throughout a long season. Bush berries are, for the most part, best adapted for growing in regions comparatively close to the consuming centers. They are generally consumed in the fresh conditions and must, therefore, be fully mature. And present an attractive appearance when displayed for sale. In some districts a considerable portion of the crop is preserved, or made into jams and jellies. Small quantities are sometimes dehydrated and sold as dried fruit. Probably the chief outlet for the commercially canned berries is the bakery trade, in which they are made into pies or tarts. This trade also uses a. Considerable quantity of frozen berries. In the latter case, the berries are fro-zen and keptfin the original container at a temper 'ature of about 20 degrees Fahrenheit until used. Berries handled in this way are said to retain more nearly the fresh flavor and aroma than those preserved in any other manner. Card and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-21 with total page 554 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bush-Fruits a Horticultural Monograph of Raspberries, Blackberries, Dewberries, Currants, Gooseberries, and Other Shrub-Like Fruits In this book an effort has been made to dis cuss all those small fruits which have many or most points in common. Therefore, the strawberry and cranberry have been omitted, and the term bush-fruits, long in use in England, is employed to designate the group. The use of this term will go far towards elucidating the principles involved in the cultivation of the fruits here described, by eliminating unrelated topics; for the principles which underlie the management of the strawberry are no more like the principles underlying the management of the blackberry than they are like those concerned in the growing of the apple. Book Hardy Fruit Culture Classic Reprint

Download or read book Hardy Fruit Culture Classic Reprint written by Charles F. Lawrance and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hardy Fruit Culture The term "fruit tree" conjures up, for many people, the image of a great tree with immense spreading branches and wandering roots. "We have no room for fruit trees," they say, and that is the chief reason why many owners of small gardens do not plant fruit trees. Insecurity of tenure provides another reason - the man who hires his garden on a very short lease does not care to plant trees because he is under the impression that he cannot move them if, and when, he gives up the land. The general belief that fruit trees will not come into bearing until they are ten or twelve years old is another thing which militates against the planting of hardy fruits. It is time that all this misunderstanding was swept away; every one should know that when fruit trees are worked on the right kind of stock, they will take up very little room in the garden, they will come into bearing within two or three years after grafting and, if necessary, they may be lifted and moved even when they have been growing in the same spot for six or eight years. With respect to the last point, it is necessary under existing laws, to obtain the permission of the landlord before planting trees in hired gardens; then the trees may be moved when the tenancy expires. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Miniature Fruit Garden: Or the Culture of Pyramidal and Bush Fruit Trees With Instructions for Root-Pruning &C. &C I cannot - and it is not a matter of regret - add anything new. Trees do not change their nature, and the rules for their cultivation in one year, if sound, must be the same in all succeeding years. I have endeavoured to point out a method of making condensed orchards on a system which I believe to be sound, as it is no theory but practice. I can only hope that the present edition may deserve the same success that has hitherto attended all the previous editions. Book Fruit Growing for Amateurs Classic Reprint

Download or read book Fruit Growing for Amateurs Classic Reprint written by Harry Higgott Thomas and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-03 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fruit Growing for Amateurs The cultivation of fruit trees, if practised with care and dis crimination, proves of absorbing interest, and is profitable. If, however, the work is commenced by the inexperienced without due inquiry, and in ignorance of essential details of cultivation, failure, comparative if not absolute, is inevitable. Providing the amateur plants a representative selection of fruits, and disposes them in the positions best suited to their needs, he will not have long to wait for some return on his outlay. He should plant not only Apple, Pear, Plum, Peach, and Cherry - none of which gives a fair cr0p until several years have passed - but Strawberry, Raspberry, Gooseberry, and Currant. If Strawberries are planted in late summer a. Cr0p of excellent fruits may be obtained the following year, and the bush fruits quickly come into bearing. By widening the scope of his fruit garden the amateur adds not only to its interest, but secures a profitable return in as short a time as possible. If walls are available it should be the object of the gardener to cover them without delay, for wall area is valuable. The simplest way to do this is to plant trained standards between the fan-trained trees or espaliers; in the course of years the latter will spread and occupy the whole wall area, but, meanwhile, much fruit can be obtained from the trained standard trees planted to fill the upper part of the wall. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tree, Shrub and Fruit Seeds: Autumn, 1915 Spring, 1916 We cover the largest seed growing districts in the world, and with our experienced collectors, we are in a position to furnish you the best quality of seeds in the largest of varieties and quantities at the most reasonable prices. We do our best to send out sound and perfect seeds, but in the case of oaks, hickories and chestnuts the seeds are sometimes wormy, a defect that cannot be detected until the worm eats its way out, often after the seeds leave our hands. There are trees, too, that never perfect all their seeds - the Acer saccharum and Liriodendron are examples - and there is no way to separate the imperfect seeds.
