Download or read book Trucking in the Age of Information written by Dale Belman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-01-18 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trucking in the Age of Information provides a comprehensive overview of the contemporary trucking industry. Prior research on trucking has focused on the effects of deregulation on the industry, but the industry's current transformation is driven by information technology, emerging business strategies, globalization of commodity production and the rise of package express and logistics. The volume brings together acknowledged and emerging scholars of the industry including Thomas Corsi (University of Maryland), Chelsea White III (Georgia Tech), Starr McMullen (Oregon State University), Will Mitchell (Duke University), Jeff Liker (University of Michigan), Francine LaFontaine (University of Michigan), Kristen Monaco (California State University at Long Beach) and Michael Conyngham (International Brotherhood of Teamsters) to address issues including technological change, third party logistics, lean trucking, driver safety and health, homeland security and the consolidation of trucking services. Each chapter provides an overview of industry issues and a discussion of current research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Congress has charged the Department of Transportation with the task of achieving a reduction in traffic accidents and their resulting deaths and injuries. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is the Departmental agency which formulates and administers safety programs designed to meet these goals. To evaluate existing and proposed highway safety and motor vehicle safety standards, identify problem areas, establish better safety systems and generate improved standards and remedial measures, a strong analytical foundation is required. The National Center for Statistics and Analysis (NCSA) was established to develop a comprehensive, reliable and timely data collection program and provide the necessary foundation to support NHTSA's highway safety activities. The Center is responsible for all activities related to accident statistics from experimental design through data collection, storage, analysis and dissemination.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During day-to-day use, thousands of lives are lost each year due to accidents, directly or indirectly, resulting from poor transportation system reliability and safety. In the United States, automobile accidents alone result in around 42,000 deaths per year, costing billions of dollars to the economy each year. A common subject in journal articles
Download or read book A Guide to Sources of Texas Criminal Justice Statistics written by R. Scott Harnsberger and published by University of North Texas Press. This book was released on 2011 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This reference work was compiled as a resource for those needing assistance in locating Texas criminal justice statistics. R. Scott Harnsberger has compiled more than 600 entries describing statistical sources for Texas crime; criminals; law enforcement; courts and sentencing; adult and juvenile corrections; capital punishment and death row; victims of crime; driving/boating under the influence; traffic fatalities; substance abuse and treatment; polls and rankings; and fiscal topics such as appropriations, revenues, expenditures, and federal aid. The sources for these statistics originate primarily, but not exclusively, from federal and State of Texas agencies, boards, bureaus, commissions, and departments. The following types of publications are included: annual, biennial, and biannual reports; reports issued in series; analytic and research reports; statistical compilations; budgets and other fiscal documents; audits, inspections, and investigations; census publications; polls; projections; rankings; surveys; continuously updated online resources; and datasets. Harnsberger has annotated the entries to provide sufficient detail to enable users to decide whether the listed resources merit further investigation. Additional notes contain URLs and information regarding the scope of the published data; title changes; related publications; and the availability of earlier data, previous editions, online tables, and datasets. This book will prove to be a valuable resource for students, faculty, researchers, government officials, and individuals in the law enforcement, correctional, and judicial professions.
Download or read book Safety and Human Error in Engineering Systems written by B.S. Dhillon and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2012-07-05 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an approach that combines coverage of safety and human error into a single volume, Safety and Human Error in Engineering Systems eliminates the need to consult many different and diverse sources for those who need information about both topics. The book begins with an introduction to aspects of safety and human error and a discussion of mathematical concepts that builds understanding of the material presented in subsequent chapters. The author describes the methods that can be used to perform safety and human error analysis in engineering systems and includes examples, along with their solutions, as well as problems to test reader comprehension. He presents a total of ten methods considered useful for performing safety and human error analysis in engineering systems. The book also covers safety and human error transportation systems, medical systems, and mining equipment as well as robots and software. Nowadays, engineering systems are an important element of the world economy as each year billions of dollars are spent to develop, manufacture, and operate various types of engineering systems around the globe. A rise in accidental deaths has put the spotlight on the role human error plays in the safety and failure of these systems. Written by an expert in various aspects of healthcare, engineering management, design, reliability, safety, and quality, this book provides tools and techniques for improving engineering systems with respect to human error and safety.
