It is believed that burials were made here in the 1600s, but no records or markers survive from that period. Record keeping was equally lax in the 1700s. To bring order into the use of the cemetery, the Selectmen were authorized in 1795 to lay out the "Burial Ground into regular plats & divisions," but it was not until 1890 that a thorough and systematic survey of this large cemetery was finally done. At that time William Augustus Goodwin produced a listing of 4,136 gravestones, monuments, tombs, and grave sites, along with an accurate map showing the location of every marker. In compiling the present volume, Professor Jordan visited and checked each grave on the Goodwin map, and made additions and corrections as required. He also compared the stones with the extant burial records, and has included entries for allthose persons known to have been buried here, but for whom there are no markers. In addition, several appendices list individuals whose bodies were consigned to the Portland Medical School or the Maine Medical School for teaching purposes, individuals buried in the Alms House Yard, victims of the shipwreck of the Bohemia and the 1866 Portland fire, and individuals placed in the City Tomb whose subsequent burial place was not recorded in the city burial records. In this large collection of about 7,000 records, each entry gives the person's full name, death date, and burial location. Other data, such as age, relationships, military service, race, and religion are given where known. The data are alphabetically arranged by the name of the deceased, and there is a cross-index to other persons named. The introduction to the volume gives a detailed history of the cemetery.

Unwitting personnel can do irreparable harm to these important cultural resources. The Primer is an effort to protect historic cultural resources by breaching the gap between maintenance staff, cemetery boards, friends’ groups, and graveyard preservation professionals by offering readily available, responsible information regarding graveyard protection and preservation. It is also designed to assist those who would undertake a preservation project in the reclaiming of a neglected or abandoned historic cemetery. The book is generously illustrated with diagrams and photos illustrating procedures and gravemarker and graveyard forms, styles, and materials. Harrison is the northern-most township of Hamilton County, and the first plat for this village was recorded in 1813. Records are grouped by cemetery, arranged by lot number, and include (as available) first and last name, date of birth or age, date of death, and remarks. In 1817, Jabez C. Tunis donated one acre of land for a cemetery, stipulating that it always be used as a public burial ground-the Harrison Park Cemetery. Sixty-three burials were removed to Glen Haven Cemetery in 1887, and in 1894, the remaining burials were removed to the Woodlawn Cemetery. Three burials remain in the park to fulfill the donation requirements. Glen Haven Cemetery was incorporated in 1857 and is still active. This, the largest section, also provides (as available) place of birth, cause of death, and place of residence. Land for the Woodlawn Cemetery was deeded to the Presbyterian Church in 1832. The cemetery, now owned by Harrison Township, is still active. On February 10, 1829, two and three-tenths acres of land were deeded to the Presbyterian Church. The church building was demolished in 1879, but the Old Baptist Cemetery remains. The cemetery that later became St. John The Baptist (Catholic) Cemetery was first established in 1857. A map of Hamilton County cemeteries, maps of the individual cemeteries (with lot locations), a list of abbreviations used, and a surname index augment the text.

Though many local residents knew the property had once been a Catholic burial ground, they believed the graves had been moved to a new cemetery in the late nineteenth century in response to overcrowding and changing burial customs. But in 2007, when a developer broke ground for a new condominium complex here, the heavy machinery unearthed human bones. Clearly, some of Dubuque’s early settlers still rested there—in fact, more than anyone expected. For the next four years, staff with the Burials Program of the University of Iowa Office of the State Archaeologist excavated the site so that development could proceed. The excavation fieldwork was just the beginning. Once the digging was done each summer, skeletal biologist Robin M. Lillie and archaeologist Jennifer E. Mack still faced the enormous task of teasing out life histories from fragile bones, disintegrating artifacts, and the decaying wooden coffins the families had chosen for the deceased. Poring over scant documents and sifting through old newspapers, they pieced together the story of the cemetery and its residents, a story often surprising and poignant. Weaving together science, history, and local mythology, the tale of the Third Street Cemetery provides a fascinating glimpse into Dubuque’s early years, the hardships its settlers endured, and the difficulties they did not survive. While they worked, Lillie and Mack also grappled with the legal and ethical obligations of the living to the dead. These issues are increasingly urgent as more and more of America’s unmarked (and marked) cemeteries are removed in the name of progress. Fans of forensic crime shows and novels will find here a real-world example of what can be learned from the fragments left in time’s wake.
