Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Musicals, it is often said, burst into song and dance when mere words can no longer convey the emotion. This book argues that musicals burst into song and dance when one body can no longer convey the emotion. Rogers shows how the musical’s episodes of burlesque and minstrelsy model the kinds of radical relationships that the genre works to create across the different bodies of its performers, spectators, and creators every time the musical bursts into song. These radical relationships—borne of the musical’s obsessions with “bad” performances of gender and race—are the root of the genre’s progressive play with identity, and thus the source of its subcultural power. However, this leads to an ethical dilemma: Are the musical’s progressive politics thus rooted in its embrace of regressive entertainments like burlesque and minstrelsy? The Song Is You shows how musicals return again and again to this question, and grapple with a guilt that its joyous pleasures are based on exploiting the laboring bodies of its performers. Rogers argues that the discourse of “integration”—which claims that songs should advance the plot—has functioned to deny the radical work that the musical undertakes every time it transitions into song and dance. Looking at musicals from The Black Crook to Hamilton, Rogers confronts the gendered and racial dynamics that have always under-girded the genre, and asks how we move forward.

Book Breaking Into Song Why You Shouldn t Hate Musicals

Download or read book Breaking Into Song Why You Shouldn t Hate Musicals written by Adam Lenson and published by . This book was released on 2021-09-02 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: People rarely say they hate books, or television, or films. But they often say they hate musicals. Moreover everyone seems to have a fixed idea of exactly what a musical is; what it sounds like, looks like, or is about. Why is the collision and integration of music, song and storytelling so polarising and why have we allowed a form so full of possibility to become so repetitive and restrictive? Through a series of essays Breaking Into Song asks what audiences can do to stay open minded and what creatives can do to make new musicals better. Examining both sides of the divide, Adam Lenson asks how those who both love and hate musicals can further expand the possibilities of this widely misunderstood medium.

Book Demystifying Disney

Download or read book Demystifying Disney written by Chris Pallant and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2011-07-28 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Demystifying Disney: A History of Disney Feature Animation provides a comprehensive and thoroughly up-to-date examination of the Disney studio's evolution through its animated films. In addition to challenging certain misconceptions concerning the studio's development, the study also brings scholarly definition to hitherto neglected aspects of contemporary Disney. Through a combination of economic, cultural, historical, textual, and technological approaches, this book provides a discriminating analysis of Disney authorship, and the authorial claims of others working within the studio; conceptual and theoretical engagement with the constructions of 'Classic' Disney, the Disney Renaissance, and Neo-Disney; Disney's relationship with other studios; how certain Disney animations problematise a homogeneous reading of the studio's output; and how the studio's animation has changed as a consequence of new digital technologies. For all those interested in gaining a better understanding of one of cinema's most popular and innovative studios, this will be an invaluable addition to the existing literature.

Book excerpt: Hollywood's conversion from silent to synchronized sound film production not only instigated the convergence of the film and music industries but also gave rise to an extraordinary period of songs in American cinema. Saying It With Songs considers how the increasing interdependence of Hollywood studios and Tin Pan Alley music publishing firms influenced the commercial and narrative functions of popular songs. While most scholarship on film music of the period focuses on adaptations of Broadway musicals, this book examines the functions of songs in a variety of non-musical genres, including melodramas, romantic comedies, Westerns, prison dramas, and action-adventure films, and shows how filmmakers tested and refined their approach to songs in order to reconcile the spectacle of song performance, the classical norms of storytelling, and the conventions of background orchestral scoring from the period of silent cinema. Written for film and music scholars alike as well as for general readers, Saying It With Songs illuminates the origins of the popular song score aesthetic of American cinema.

Book The Altogether Unexpected Disappearance of Atticus Craftsman

Download or read book The Altogether Unexpected Disappearance of Atticus Craftsman written by Mamen Sánchez and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2016-08-09 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fiendishly fun and charming novel with the quirky appeal of a Pedro Almodóvar film—this feel-good read follows a tightly wound Englishman whose trip to Madrid takes an unexpected turn when he encounters a group of strong-minded women who will do anything to keep the jobs they love. Atticus Craftsman never travels without a supply of Earl Grey, an electric kettle, and a teacup—so he makes sure he has packed all three after his father, distinguished publishers of Craftsman & Co., sends him to Madrid to shut down a failing literary magazine, Librarte. But when nobody has heard from Atticus in three months, his father knows something must be very wrong. Fortunately, Inspector Manchego is on the case. Manchego gets to work unraveling the mystery of the Englishman’s disappearance, but there to block him at every turn are the five fiery and close-knit Spanish women who run Librarte and must devise a plan to save the magazine. A botched kidnapping and the rumored discovery of a trove of long-lost Federico García Lorca poems propel Atticus—with Manchego hot on his trail—on a madcap journey through the narrow streets of Madrid and down to the bohemian heart of Andalucía. Sánchez spellbinds us with larger-than-life characters and heartfelt emotions in this charming tale of clashing cultures and unlikely romance. The Altogether Unexpected Disappearance of Atticus Craftsman is at once a humorous, literary caper and a touching love story, marking for an altogether clever and delightfully different read.
