Book Burrs Produced by Drilling

Download or read book Burrs Produced by Drilling written by and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Component parts of small precision mechanisms typically require nearly sharp edges to assure reliable operation. A burr-free condition also is needed to minimize a possible jamming of the mechanism because of burrs breaking loose. Small burrs are easily removed by many deburring processes. Increasing the feedrate resulted in longer exit burrs from 303Se stainless steel and 1018 steel. Drill geometry, workpiece materials, and workpiece thickness also affected the exit-burr length. Radial-lip drills produced shorter exit burrs at fast feedrates in 303Se stainless steel than did the other drills, and they produced thinner exit burrs at all feedrates. Little difference was observed in the results from different drill points used in other materials. Burr size varied with the number of holes drilled in a typical wear-life pattern. Exit-burr thickness was a linear function of exit-burr length for the stainless steel specimens. No relationship between these properties was observed for either 1018 steel or 6061-T6 aluminum. The use of a backup material having a hole equal in diameter to that of the drill resulted in significantly shorter and thinner exit burrs than did any other drilling method studied.

Book Burrs Analysis Control and Removal

Download or read book Burrs Analysis Control and Removal written by Jan C. Aurich and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-12-01 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In many machining operations burrs cannot be avoided. They can affect the functionality and the safe handling of the workpiece in the subsequent processing, and have to be removed by a special deburring process. Toleration of burrs, which are not part of functional edges, depends on their respective shape and size. High inspection effort is necessary to guarantee the workpiece quality. Therefore, the research results on burrs, with a focus on burr analysis and control as well as on cleanability and burr removal based on the presentations held at the conference are valuable for researchers and engineers in manufacturing development.

Book Investigation of Interlayer Burr Formation in the Drilling of Stacked Aluminum Sheets

Download or read book Investigation of Interlayer Burr Formation in the Drilling of Stacked Aluminum Sheets written by Cody Hellstern and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the drilling process, sharp edges of material called burrs are produced and protrude from the original surface. When a through-hole is drilled, burrs form on both the entry and exit surfaces around the hole, requiring expensive deburring operations to be performed in order to meet part specifications. A common hole producing operation in aircraft assembly is drilling holes through multiple sheet metal layers in order to fasten them together. However, at the interface between two layers, burrs form on both the exit of the first layer (termed "skin") and entry of the second layer (termed "frame"). Consequently, the layers frequently need to be taken apart, deburred, and put back together again before being fastened, resulting in additional costs and increased assembly time. The goal of this thesis was to understand the role of key factors such as drill geometry, drill wear and clamping conditions on burr formation at the interface of two thin sheets of 2024-T3 aluminum so that interlayer burr formation could be minimized. This problem was approached from three different angles. First, an experimental study was performed to find the drill geometry parameters for minimization of interlayer burrs and to ascertain the relationship between the average burr size and drill wear. Next, a new kind of clamping system for holding sheet metal layers together during drilling was designed, prototyped, and tested for its effectiveness. Finally, a preliminary analytical model of interlayer burr formation was created in order to better understand the burr formation process in stacked layers of sheet metal and to better understand the effect that each drilling parameter has on the resulting burr size.

Book Effects of Drilling Variables on Burr Properties

Download or read book Effects of Drilling Variables on Burr Properties written by and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An investigation utilizing 303Se stainless steel, 17-4PH stainless steel, 1018 steel, and 6061-T6 aluminum was conducted to determine the influence of drilling variables in controlling burr size to minimize burr-removal cost and improve the quality and reliability of parts for small precision mechanisms. Burr thickness can be minimized by reducing feedrate and cutting velocity, and by using drills having high helix angles. High helix angles reduce burr thickness, length, and radius, while most other variables reduce only one of these properties. Radial-lip drills minimize burrs from 303Se stainless steel when large numbers of holes are drilled; this material stretches 10 percent before drill-breakthrough. Entrance burrs can be minimized by the use of subland drills at a greatly increased tool cost. Backup-rods used in cross-drilled holes may be difficult to remove and may scratch the hole walls.
