These facts have been chiefly derived from the editions by Chambers and Scott Douglas; the latter's arrangement of the poems has also been followed in tracing the development of the poet's work. The bibliography has been selected from various sources, and it is hoped that no work of importance has been omitted. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Robert Burns But otherwise the story of Burns's life has been told with such minuteness of detail, that the internal evidence of his poetry would seem only to be called in to verify or correct the verdict of tradition and the garbled gossip of those wise after the fact of his fame. It is so easy after a man has compelled the attention of the world to fill up the empty years of his life when he was all unknown to fame, with illustrative anecdotes and almost forgotten incidents, revealed and coloured by the light of after events! This is a penalty of genius, and it is sometimes called fame, as if fame were a gift given of the world out of a boundless and unintelligent curiosity, and not the life-record or work achieved. It is easier to collect ana and to make them into the patchwork pattern of a life than to read the character of the man in his writings; and patchwork, of necessity, has more of colour than the homespun web of a peasant-poet. Those 'who can wallow in the muck of degraded biographers are only a degree less wicked than the biographers themselves, who sin against the dead, and sin against the living by providing debasing matter for them to read. This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Genius, and Character of Burns Burns is by far the greatest poet that ever sprung from the bosom of the people, and lived and died in an humble condition. Indeed, no country in the world but Scotland could have produced such a man; and he will be for ever regarded as these glorious representative of the genius of his country. He was born a poet, if ever man was, and to his native genius alone is owing the perpetuity of his fame. For he manifestly had never very deeply studied poetry as an art, nor reasoned much about its principles, nor looked abroad with the wide ken of intellect for objects and subjects on which to pour out his inspiration. The condition of the peasantry of Scotland, the happiest, perhaps, that providence ever allowed to the children of labor, was? not surveyed and speculated on by him as the field of poetry, but as the field of his own existence; and he chronicled the events that passed there, not merely as food for his imagination as a poet, but as food for his heart as a man. Hence, when inspired to compose poetry, poetry came gushing up from the well of his human affections, and he had nothing more to do, than to pour it. like streams irrigating a meadow, in many a cheerful tide over the drooping flowers and fading verdure of life. Book Life of Robert Burns Classic Reprint

Download or read book Life of Robert Burns Classic Reprint written by James Craig Higgins and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-05-14 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life of Robert Burns Most people are aware that the Life of Burns has already been dealt with by not a few eminent writers. It was, therefore, with reluctance and misgivings that I - alto gether without experience of this kind of work - under took to pen a sketch of the Poet's career, with a View to the completion of the Third Volume of The Book of Robert Burns, which was projected and so far carried through by the late Dr. Charles Rogers, under the auspices of the Grampian Club. When the third volume of the above-named work appeared, my narrative met with many unexpectedly favour able press notices, in some of which the opinion was expressed that this Life of Burns should be recast for publication in separate form, and at a cost easily acces sible to those of the general public who might care to have it. The Biography is now issued in accordance with this opinion. It is nowadays next to impossible to lay any large or just claim to originality in dealing with the Life of Burns. This volume only claims to be a faithful and sympathetic effort to put together a record of facts, as full as moderate space would hold, and in language as simple and concise as the writer could employ. A biographer's first and constant aim should be to keep himself in the background. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of Robert Burns, Vol. 1 of 3: Genealogical and Historical Memoirs of the Poet His Associates and Those Celebrated in His Writings Robert burns came forth with a special mission to his country and to humanity, by illustrating the doctrine of the Divine Father hood, and the consequent brotherhood of man also by enforcing the duty of cherishing the virtues of sincerity, sympathy, and benevolence. Wherein in the exercise of his great function he struggled and fell short, and wherein he triumphed, it is our chief object in the present work to denote or signalize. Book The Life and Works of Robert Burns Vol 1 of 4 Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2018-03-02 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life and Works of Robert Burns, Vol. 1 of 4 Tm; writings of Burns - his Poems, Songs, and Letters - are most of them so expressly the coinage of his immediate experiences and feelings, that his life might be read in them alone. As hitherto arranged, each series might be likened to a fragmentary view of the Poet's life, supplementary to the meagre memoir usually prefixed. So arranged, the biographic effect of the whole is either imperfectly developed, or lost by dissipation. It occurred to me - and I find that the same idea had latterly occurred to Allan Cunningham - that if the various compositions were strung in strict chronological order upon the memoir, they might be made to render up the whole light which they are qualified to throw upon the history of the life and mental progress of Burns, at the same time that a new significancy was given to them by their being read in connection with the current of events and emotions which led to their production. Such is the plan here adopted, and the menlt is not merely a great amount of new biographical detail, but a new sense, efficacy, and feeling, in the writings of the Poet himself.' This quotation from the preface to the first edition of Dr Robert Chambers's Life and Works of Robert Burns fully explains the spirit in which that work was undertaken, and the plan in accordance with which it was carried out. The forty-five years that have passed since these words were written have signally proved their wisdom. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Robert Burns: And the Common People At the request of the publishers, and for my own pleasure, I have written a book about Robert Burns. I am now told there must be a foreword or preface. This I believe is quite in accordance with orthodox bookmaking practice. A foreword is never a foreword. It is an afterthought. It is the last thing written, and would be described as a postscript were it not that it is placed at the beginning instead of at the end. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Robert Burns and the Medical Profession I was asked, some time ago, at a Burns Anniversary Celebration, to reply to the toast of the Medical Profession; and in casting about in my mind what to say in justification of the honour, it occurred to me that the name of the Bard was associated with the medical faculty in a much more intimate manner than at first sight appeared, or was even generally understood; and that it was, therefore, a not inappropriate toast to be proposed at a gathering of Burns admirers. Afterwards, pursuing the same train of thought, and going deeper into the subject, I soon became convinced of the accuracy of my conjecture - that, indeed, the field, if somewhat circumscribed, was so rich in materials and interest, that justice could not be done to it within the prescribed limits assigned either to an after-dinner toast or in a reply to the same. A lecture, or even a book, as the matter grew under my hand, seemed the likelier and the truer destination to which its dimensions should reach. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early Critical Reviews on Robert Burns None of the following works (we are told in the preface) were ever composed with a View to the press. To amuse himself with the little creations of his own fancy, among the toil and fatigues of a laborious life; to transcribe the various feelings, the loves, the griefs, the hopes, the fears in his own breast; to find some kind of counterpoise to the struggles of a world, always an alien scene, a task uncouth to the poetical mind - these were his motives for courting the muses, and in these he found poetry its own reward. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Robert Burns: As a Poet, and as a Man There is a spirit of romance in the heart of man, that is ever striving after something better than the realities of life. This spirit is allied to the noblest faculties of the soul, and, as it is native to the mind, must be gratified in some way. There must be a literature, in which it is embodied, in order, by its representations, to satisfy its cravings. It is this spirit which writes novels and it is this spirit which reads them. And novel-reading is the literary bane of this age. It renders the mind superficial, and far worse, it renders the heart superficial. The representations of novels do not touch the deeper, and more solemn sympa thies of the heart. Even in its highest form, the novel is an inferior species of literature. Easy in its narrative, in teresting in its incidents, requiring no effort to fix the atten tion upon its rehearsals, it draws the mind off from the monotony of life, and pleases for the moment. But when the fictitious visions pass from before the eyes, there is nothing of permanent truth left, in either the mind or the heart. We pass into an apathy like that after a revel.
