When the third volume of the above-named work appeared, my narrative met with many unexpectedly favour able press notices, in some of which the opinion was expressed that this Life of Burns should be recast for publication in separate form, and at a cost easily acces sible to those of the general public who might care to have it. The Biography is now issued in accordance with this opinion. It is nowadays next to impossible to lay any large or just claim to originality in dealing with the Life of Burns. It occurred to me - and I find that the same idea had latterly occurred to Allan Cunningham - that if the various compositions were strung in strict chronological order upon the memoir, they might be made to render up the whole light which they are qualified to throw upon the history of the life and mental progress of Burns, at the same time that a new significancy was given to them by their being read in connection with the current of events and emotions which led to their production. Such is the plan here adopted, and the menlt is not merely a great amount of new biographical detail, but a new sense, efficacy, and feeling, in the writings of the Poet himself.' There must be a literature, in which it is embodied, in order, by its representations, to satisfy its cravings. It is this spirit which writes novels and it is this spirit which reads them. And novel-reading is the literary bane of this age. It renders the mind superficial, and far worse, it renders the heart superficial. The representations of novels do not touch the deeper, and more solemn sympa thies of the heart. Even in its highest form, the novel is an inferior species of literature. Easy in its narrative, in teresting in its incidents, requiring no effort to fix the atten tion upon its rehearsals, it draws the mind off from the monotony of life, and pleases for the moment. But when the fictitious visions pass from before the eyes, there is nothing of permanent truth left, in either the mind or the heart. We pass into an apathy like that after a revel.
