Book MYSTICISM Complete Edition

Download or read book MYSTICISM Complete Edition written by Evelyn Underhill and published by e-artnow. This book was released on 2018-12-21 with total page 565 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This eBook has been formatted to the highest digital standards and adjusted for readability on all devices. The spirit of "Mysticism" is romantic, engaged, and theoretical rather than historical or scientific. Underhill has little use for theoretical explanations and the traditional religious experience, formal classifications or analysis. She dismisses William James' pioneering study, The Varieties of Religious Experience (1902), and his "four marks of the mystic state" (ineffability, noetic quality, transcience, and passivity). Excerpt: "All men, at one time or another, have fallen in love with the veiled Isis whom they call Truth. With most, this has been a passing passion: they have early seen its hopelessness and turned to more practical things. But others remain all their lives the devout lovers of reality: though the manner of their love, the vision which they make to themselves of the beloved object varies enormously. Some see Truth as Dante saw Beatrice: an adorable yet intangible figure, found in this world yet revealing the next."

Book Sweet Dreams and Flying Machines

Download or read book Sweet Dreams and Flying Machines written by Mark Ribowsky and published by Chicago Review Press. This book was released on 2016-06-01 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1970 a scraggly, antiheroic young man from North Carolina by way of Massachusetts began presenting a comforting new sound, a kind never heard before. Within a year, when young ears sought a new sound, there was "Fire and Rain" and "You've Got a Friend," and a new Southern California-fed branch of pop music. Taylor was its reluctant leader. Remarkably, Taylor has survived: his 2015 release, Before This World, edged out Taylor Swift and went to #1 on the charts. Today he is in better physical and probably mental condition than during the whirlwind when he influenced music so heavily, the decade when magazines and newspapers printed feverish stories about his gawky hunkiness, his love affair with Joni Mitchell, his glittery marriage to Carly Simon, his endlessly carried-out heroin habit, and sometimes even his music. Despite it all, Taylor has become the nearest thing to rock royalty in America. Based on fresh interviews with musicians, producers, record company people, and music journalists, as well as previously published interviews, reviews, and profiles, Sweet Dreams and Flying Machines is the definitive biography of an elusive superstar.

Book The Memorial of the Abundance of the Divine Sweetness

Download or read book The Memorial of the Abundance of the Divine Sweetness written by Gertrud the Great of Helfta and published by Liturgical Press. This book was released on 2022-09-15 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gertrud the Great (1256–1302) entered the monastery of Helfta in eastern Germany as a child oblate. At the age of twenty-five she underwent a conversion that led to a series of visionary experiences, some of which she recorded in Latin “with her own hand,” in what became Book Two of The Herald of God’s Loving-Kindness, the standard version of her revelations. The other four books were written down by a close confidant of the saint, now often known as "Sister N." Recently a different version of Gertrud's revelations has been discovered, in an early fourteenth-century manuscript held at the University of Leipzig, Germany, much older than the known manuscripts of The Herald. The Memorial of the Abundance of the Divine Sweetness is shorter than The Herald, and while the two versions have some text in common (notably most of The Herald's Book Two), the new manuscript also contains some completely new material, which sometimes modifies and sometimes complements what readers already know of the saint.

Book excerpt: Grace is a registered nurse with moxie. To date, she’s survived a divorce, a mastectomy, and a Toni home perm. Two children and two exasperating dogs keep her busy when she’s not working in the recovery room at St. Erik’s hospital. One of Grace’s co-workers is a nurse anesthetist named Dakota Kohler. Dakota has his own history of adversity and his own health issue. Like millions of middle-aged men, he deals with erectile dysfunction. Dakota would love the chance to know Grace on a personal level. Just as their platonic relationship turns romantic, however, Grace and Dakota land in the middle of a wrongful death suit and allegations of child abuse. Together they must navigate issues of personal trust, legal challenges, and bodies that have – no pun toward Dakota – let them down. Often funny and always warm, Sweet Dreams is the story of grown-ups growing more.

  • Publisher : Penguin
  • Release : 2018-06-05
  • ISBN : 0399573666
  • Pages : 188 pages

Download or read book Sweet and Low written by Nick White and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2018-06-05 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NAMED ONE OF THE MOST ANTICIPATED BOOKS OF SUMMER 2018 BY O Magazine, Entertainment Weekly, New York Post, The Millions, Southern Living, POPSUGAR, The Wall Street Journal, Chicago Review of Books Praised by the Washington Post as "Tennessee Williams . . . transposed to the twenty-first-century South," Nick White returns with a stunning short-story collection that tackles issues of masculinity, identity, and place, with a sharp eye for social commentary and a singular handling of character. At first glance, the stories in Sweet and Low seem grounded in the everyday: they paint pictures of idyllic Southern landscapes, characters fulfilling their roles as students, wives, boyfriends, sons. But they are not what they seem. In these stories, Nick White deconstructs the core qualities of Southern fiction, exposing deeply flawed and fascinating characters--promiscuous academics, aging podcasters, woodpecker assassins, and lawnmower enthusiasts, among others--all on wildly compelling quests. From finding an elusive bear to locating a prized timepiece to making love on the grave of an iconic writer, each story is a thrilling adventure with unexpected turns. White's honest and provocative prose will jolt readers awake with its urgency.
