Download or read book Intuition written by Allegra Goodman and published by Dial Press. This book was released on 2006-02-28 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hailed as “a writer of uncommon clarity” by the New Yorker, National Book Award finalist Allegra Goodman has dazzled readers with her acclaimed works of fiction, including such beloved bestsellers as The Family Markowitz and Kaaterskill Falls. Now she returns with a bracing new novel, at once an intricate mystery and a rich human drama set in the high-stakes atmosphere of a prestigious research institute in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Sandy Glass, a charismatic publicity-seeking oncologist, and Marion Mendelssohn, a pure, exacting scientist, are codirectors of a lab at the Philpott Institute dedicated to cancer research and desperately in need of a grant. Both mentors and supervisors of their young postdoctoral protégés, Glass and Mendelssohn demand dedication and obedience in a competitive environment where funding is scarce and results elusive. So when the experiments of Cliff Bannaker, a young postdoc in a rut, begin to work, the entire lab becomes giddy with newfound expectations. But Cliff’s rigorous colleague–and girlfriend–Robin Decker suspects the unthinkable: that his findings are fraudulent. As Robin makes her private doubts public and Cliff maintains his innocence, a life-changing controversy engulfs the lab and everyone in it. With extraordinary insight, Allegra Goodman brilliantly explores the intricate mixture of workplace intrigue, scientific ardor, and the moral consequences of a rush to judgment. She has written an unforgettable novel.
Download or read book Intuition in Business written by Eugene Sadler-Smith and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023-01-19 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the science behind intuitive decision-making in business, and shows how people's innate capacity for intuition can be nurtured and strengthened to maximize performance. We are all familiar with those perplexing situations when we think we 'just know' without knowing how or why we know. In professional life it might be the job candidate's CV that checks all the boxes but somehow doesn't stack-up: should we perform some due diligence and dig a little deeper? In personal life it could be the apartment that we're looking to rent that just felt right the minute we walked through the front door: should we trust our hunch and grab it while we can? What if time is of the essence? What if there isn't any more data to be had in the time available? In this volume, Eugene Sadler-Smith examines why situations like these often leave us in a quandary, and why these decisions so often leave us in two minds. He reveals that metaphorically speaking, we have two minds in one brain: an 'analytical mind' and an 'intuitive mind', which sometimes come to quite different conclusions about what we ought to do in those consequential decisions that permeate our professional and personal lives. Rather than thinking of our intuitive and analytical minds in constant battle with each other, we might instead think of them as two information-processing systems that have evolved to complement each other. The main idea of this book is that our analytical mind evolved to 'solve' whilst our intuitive mind evolved to 'sense'. Neither is infallible, and our intuitions can be both flawed and marvellous at the same time. The author's clear and detailed explanation of the science behind intuition reveals how we can make intelligent use of our intuition to sense and solve our way through a world that is fast-moving, complex, and uncertain.

Book excerpt: "The Mammoth's Extraordinary Quest: A Tale of Friendship and Freedom" The summary of this story: Max, the last mammoth, goes on a journey in the vast wilderness that is full of excitement, friendship, and the search for the extraordinary. Excited and interested, he finds a plan that leads to the mythical Dragon's Lair. Max meets different animals along the way who tell him about the dangers ahead, but he doesn't change his mind. Max moves forward with the map in his trunk, facing dangerous barriers and working hard to get past them. He walks across a rickety bridge, climbs tall mountains, stays in hot areas, and solves difficult problems. Max's kind nature shines through as he makes friends with animals like the wise owl, the friendly camel, a family of mountain goats, and an old, wise turtle. Max gets to the huge stone door that protects the entrance to the Dragon's Lair. Max uses his intelligence and wit to figure out the questions written on the door, which lets him into the dark and scary cavern inside. To his surprise, he finds Ember, a beautiful dragon who is being held prisoner by a sorceress's spell. Max approaches Ember with kindness and interest, and as they talk about their lives and share stories, they become friends. Max and Ember are driven by their friendship to try something new to break the enchantress's spell. With the help of a wise old tortoise, they face problems, trick mischievous pixies, find their way through underground mazes, and avoid deadly plants. With the help of the enchantress, the group finds a magical amulet hidden in a fortress. This lets Ember go free. Ember's royal wings spread out, and he feels free as he flies into the wide sky. Max is amazed as Ember does dangerous acrobatics against the sky at dusk, leaving lines of sparks behind her. Their trips teach them how important it is to make friends, be kind, and look for the unusual. As Max and Ember keep exploring the world, their amazing friendship inspires other people. They stand up for nature and share stories, jokes, and information with the people they meet. Their amazing friendship becomes a timeless story of strength, unity, and the changing power of love that will live on long after they are gone. Max and Ember come back to the Dragon's Lair in their old age to think about their amazing journey. With thankful hearts and a shared sense of success, they take in the beauty of their memories and walk off into the sunset, leaving a legacy of inspiration and the enduring power of friendship in the hearts of everyone who hears their amazing story. How the story began: Once upon a time, Max, a kind and friendly giant, lived in a faraway land. Max was the last of his kind. He was a beautiful mammoth who roamed the vast desert with a warm heart and an insatiable curiosity. With each step, his big, padded feet left marks in the rich soil, showing his way through the wild land he called home. Even though the world around him had changed, Max never stopped looking for new adventures and deep connections with other people. He wanted to go into places no one had been before and see the secret wonders that lay beyond the horizon. Max liked to roam, but he also wanted friends because he knew the power and pleasure of having friends. He woke up every morning hoping to meet new friends with whom he could laugh, tell stories, and talk about memories that were important to him. Max wandered around with an unbreakable spirit, his big tusks proudly pointing to the sky, whether he was in a snow-capped mountain, a lush forest, or a quiet field. His eyes, full of gentle wisdom, looked out over the horizon, always on the lookout for possible friends. Max's appearance in the wilderness was a reminder of how grand and beautiful the world used to be, as well as a sign of how strong and determined his species is. Max continued his journey with his heart wide open and his trunk held high, ready to embrace the wonders that awaited him. He traveled through the vast wilderness in search of new adventures and friends who could share in the wonder of his life. Max was walking through an old, thick forest with his big feet crushing on dead leaves when he came across an unexpected treasure: a worn map with a lot of detail. It looked like the thin parchment told stories of danger and mystery. Max's eyes got very big as the map came out of his long trunk. It told everyone how to get to the famous Dragon's Lair, which got everyone excited. Legends and stories had been told about the lair, which was where dragons with golden scales and the ability to breathe fire lived, for many years. Max's heart was beating fast with a mix of joy and fear because he knew this trip would be special. The map was written in faded ink and had symbols that were hard to understand. It pointed to uncharted territory and hid risks. It said that Max would have to show how strong and determined he was, and that the trip would push him to his limits. Still, he was attracted to the unknown. As his trunk traced the fine lines and muttered secrets of the map, he could feel the excitement of the adventure he was about to go on. Max's heartbeat with the wonder of a child, and he knew he had to go on this amazing trip. His spirit yearned to find out what was hidden in the Dragon's Lair and maybe make a new friend along the way. He got excited just thinking about dragons with wings that could reach the sky and fire that danced on their mouths. As Max looked at the map's fine details, he thought about the problems he might face strange woods, dangerous mountains, and maybe even mythical beasts that guarded the lair. Even though the lair was dangerous, he thought about the chance of making friends and finding hidden beauty. Max set out on his amazing journey with a new sense of purpose. Once a safe place to live, the dense forest turned into a doorway to the unknown. Max used the directions on the map to find his way through the tall trees and winding trails. The air around him buzzed with excitement, and the leaves' rustling told him secrets from long ago. As he went deeper into the bush, the shadows got longer and the air got thicker, giving him a feeling of danger. When Max got to the Dragon's Lair, it seemed like the forest took a deep breath. His beating sounded like thunder in the distance, and each step he took brought him closer to a magical and dangerous world. Max's trip showed how curious he was, how strong he was, and how much he believed in the power of great bonds. This dangerous journey would not only bring him face to face with legendary dragons, but it would also show him how brave he was and how much magic was in his heart. Max moved forward with the map in his hand. His heart was full of energy, and he couldn't wait to face the unknown and write his name into the Dragon's Lair legends. Max went on a dangerous journey to find the Dragon's Lair, keeping the valuable map hidden in his trunk. As he went deeper into the woods, the air took on a mix of fear and excitement. Max met a lot of different animals on his way, and each one gave him their own advice and warnings about the risks that lay ahead. As Max got closer, the wise owl, which was perched high in the trees, hooted in a serious way. Its eyes shone with old knowledge as it spoke: "Be careful, Max. The dragon is fierce and smart, and its lair is hidden and full of traps and hidden dangers. Max's eyes showed both respect and determination as he nodded appreciatively. He knew the owl's words of caution were wise, but the fire within him kept him moving forward despite the dangers. Keep your eyes open and trust your gut. The lair has many secrets, but you'll need a sharp mind to figure them out." Max listened carefully and understood that courage alone would not be enough to get him through the next challenges. He thanked the fox for its advice and silently promised to follow it as he went on. But keep in mind that there are possibilities within the risks. Stay true to your kind heart and show the dragon how kind you are. Maybe, just maybe, a friendship can be made in the middle of all the trouble." Max smiled at the squirrel's words, grateful for the reminder that kindness and compassion could lead to unexpected places. He knew that bravery could come in many forms, and that his gentle nature could be the key to a different kind of adventure in the Dragon's Lair. Max continued his journey with a strong will and a heart full of fear and excitement. He was ready to face the dangers and test his mettle in the Dragon's Lair, and the warnings of his friends were always in the back of his mind as a reminder of the risks and rewards that lay ahead. As Max traveled further along his path, he met Terrance, a wise old tortoise who had lived in the wilderness for many years. The dragon is a scary creature. Its scales are as hard as stone, and its breath is so hot that it can burn the ground. But don't let fear take over, because the dragon is guarding riches beyond your wildest dreams, things that are very wise and interesting. Max's eyes lit up with a mix of reverence and curiosity as he listened to Terrance. He knew that the risks and potential rewards were both big. Terrance's wise words reminded him that true bravery is shown in the face of danger. You might feel scared when you see the dragon but remember that you are strong. Protect what you care about and count on your own strength. May the spirit of the bear help you get through the hard times that are coming." Max felt a surge of gratitude for the bear's advice, which made him realize that he would need his own strength and resolve to face the challenges of the Dragon's Lair. When faced with adversity, he vowed to stay true to his beliefs and draw on his inner strength. With each step, Max's resolve grew stronger thanks to the advice and wisdom of the owl, the fox, the squirrel, the tortoise, and the bear. Max took a deep breath as the cool breeze brushed against his fur. He was ready for the challenges ahead, sure that his determination, intelligence, and the knowledge of his animal friends would get him through. As he continued his hard journey, Max's path led him to a mighty river whose rushing waters crashed against huge boulders with a deafening roar. The only way across was a rickety, narrow bridge that swayed dangerously with every gust of wind. However, Max's desire to reach the Dragon's Lair outweighed any hesitation. He approached the shaky bridge with unwavering determination and crossed it. Max reached out with his trunk to touch the old ropes that held up the bridge. He wanted to turn back, but the Dragon's Lair, with its promise of adventure and discovery, made him want to keep going. Max's excitement grew with each passing second, just like the landscape before him. The once dense forest had been replaced by a rocky landscape with towering cliffs and hidden caverns. A mist of ethereal substance floated through the air, carrying with it the echoes of long-forgotten legends. The change from what he knew to what he didn't know filled him with both excitement and awe for the wonders that lay ahead. Max pushed through the rough terrain, his huge body moving over the rocks with a grace that belied his size. With each step, the Dragon's Lair's vastness became clearer, and Max's spirit grew with awe, curiosity, and respect.
Download or read book Two Minds written by Roger S. Frantz and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2005 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The "Two Minds" noted economist Roger Frantz explores in this landmark book are, first, the analytical mind and, second, the intuitive mind. In part one he presents the leading theories on intuition, discusses recent developments in cognitive science, and borrows from such non-economist intuitors as Albert Einstein, Jonas Salk, Henri Poincare, Ludwig von Beethoven, and Robert Louis Stevenson to explore the role of intuition in science and creativity. In part two, Frantz considers the presumably analytic and logical nature of economics and then demonstrates the many ways in which economists from Adam Smith to Herbert Simon have relied on intuition as a fruitful mental activity. This book provides a rich complement and alternative perspective to some of the theoretical and mathematical models that have dominated the dismal science since the late 1940s.

Download or read book The Hubris Hazard and How to Avoid It written by Eugene Sadler-Smith and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-03-15 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hubris is something we’ve all seen in action and experienced all too often. It’s a significant occupational hazard and a serious potential derailment factor for leaders, organisations, and civil society. Hubristic leaders - intoxicated as they are with power, praise, and success–behave in ways that, if left unchecked, invite unintended and unforeseen negative consequences which impact destructively on individuals, industries, economies, and nations. Despite numerous examples throughout history of hubris’ destructive consequences, it nonetheless appears to be an ever-present and growing danger. Many leaders seem to be blind to the hazards of hubris and oblivious to the lessons of history. Prevention is better than cure and understanding the nature of the hubris hazard and the associated risk factors will help leaders and managers improve their personal performance and avoid derailment and, even more importantly, protect the well-being of employees and the resilience of their organisations over the long term. This book explains the characteristics, causes, and consequences of hubris, and shows how to combat the significant hazard it poses to managers, leaders, organisations, and society. With contemporary examples, each chapter explores a particular ‘hubris risk factor’ and shows how the risk can be managed and mitigated and exposure to the hubris hazard minimised. The Hubris Hazard, and How to Avoid It offers practical guidance and action points for managers and leaders on how to recognise hubris in themselves and others and what to do to combat it when it arises. It will also be useful for business and executive coaches and leadership trainers and developers.
