Book The Effects of Duration and Sonority on Countour Tone Distribution

Download or read book The Effects of Duration and Sonority on Countour Tone Distribution written by Jie Zhang and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-12-16 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Published in 2002. Part of the Outstanding Dissertations in Linguistics series, this is an in-depth investigation of the effects of duration and sonority on contour tone distribution. The term “tone language” usually refers to languages in which the pitch of a syllable serves lexical or grammatical functions. In some tone languages, the contrastive functions of pitch are sometimes played by pitch changes within a syllable. Pitch changes of this kind are called contour tones. The distribution of contour tones in a language, are when under what phonological contexts contour tones are more readily realized.

Book Generative Phonology and French Phonology

Download or read book Generative Phonology and French Phonology written by Dell and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1980-10-09 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Generative phonology has many adherents, and not a few critics, but surprisingly few good expositors. François Dell provides here both a general introduction and a detailed illustration of the operation of the theory in practice, introducing the main concepts of phonology and its place in the grammar of a language. The approach is in the tradition of Chomsky and Halle, emphasizing the interactions between syntax, morphology and phonology, and aiming at the discovery of general principles which shape the sound patterns of all languages. He then applies these concepts to particular case studies, on the maxim that the best way to understand a system of this kind is to use it. This was first published as Part I of Les règles et les sons (Hermann, 1973).

Book Principles of Radical CV Phonology

Download or read book Principles of Radical CV Phonology written by van der Hulst Harry van der Hulst and published by Edinburgh University Press. This book was released on 2020-07-06 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Harry van der Hulst's model of Radical CV Phonology has roots in the framework of Dependency Phonology, but proposes a rather different 'geometry', which reduces the set of unary elements to just two: |C| and |V|. The model explains the phonological distinctions that function contrastively in the world's languages rather than presenting it as a 'random' list. Van der Hulst shows how this model accounts for a number of central claims about markedness and minimal specification. He explains how the representational system accounts for phonological rules and shows how this theory can be applied to sign language structure. Through comparison to other models, he also provides insight into current theories of segmental structure, commonly used feature systems, as well as recurrent controversies.

Book The Form of Structure the Structure of Form

Download or read book The Form of Structure the Structure of Form written by Sabrina Bendjaballah and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2014-12-15 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together articles by some major figures in various linguistics domains — phonology, morphology and syntax — aiming at explaining the form of linguistic items by exploring the structures that underlie them. The book is divided in 5 parts: vowels, syllables, templates, syntax-morphology interface and Afro-Asiatic languages. Specific topics are the internal structure of vowels and its relation to harmony; the logic of recurrent vocalic patterns; syllabic prominence; the interaction of syllabic and templatic structure and segmental realization; the innateness of templates and paradigms; the limits of phonology; and various morpho-syntactic implications on phonological form. The volume renders homage to Jean Lowenstamm’s work, by underlining the importance of seeking structural and intermodular insight in the study of linguistic form.
