He recounts from many sources tales of ships and men who fought and, although outnumbered and outgunned, still played havoc with British shipping. He tells also of the profiteering that went hand in hand with the privateering of the war years. From the Mullica River to Cape May stretched the woodlands and the inlets that harbored smugglers. Stealthy and dangerous though their activities were, the smugglers were not outcasts. They were looked upon with indulgence by many respectable citizens of the day. As bitterness toward the mother country mounted, smugglers were encouraged and actively supported in their operation agains the Crown. The Jersey inns and taverns emerged as the "cradles of revolt" in the years immediately preceding the Revolution. A number of these inns and taverns are still in active use today and are depicted in the illustrations. Smugglers' Woods deals with smugglers, privateers, patriots, and loyalists to give an exciting account of the tensions and conflicts that gripped pre-Revolutionary and Revolutionary New Jersey.

Book excerpt: How American symbols inspired enslaved people and their allies to fight for true freedom In the early United States, anthems, flags, holidays, monuments, and memorials were powerful symbols of an American identity that helped unify a divided people. A language of freedom played a similar role in shaping the new nation. The Declaration of Independence’s assertion “that all men are created equal,” Patrick Henry’s cry of “Give me liberty, or give me death!,” and Francis Scott Key’s “star-spangled banner” waving over “the land of the free and the home of the brave,” were anthemic celebrations of a newly free people. Resonating across the country, they encouraged the creation of a republic where the right to “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness” was universal, natural, and inalienable. For enslaved people and their allies, the language and symbols that served as national touchstones made a mockery of freedom. Deriding the ideas that infused the republic’s founding, they encouraged an empty American culture that accepted the abstract notion of equality rather than the concrete idea. Yet, as award-winning author Matthew J. Clavin reveals, it was these powerful expressions of American nationalism that inspired forceful and even violent resistance to slavery. Symbols of Freedom is the surprising story of how enslaved people and their allies drew inspiration from the language and symbols of American freedom. English-speaking whalers and farmers from New England settled here in the late 1600s, buying large tracts they called plantations. Shipbuilding became an important industry in the 19th century, employing hundreds who crafted sloops and schooners used for coastal trading. Although Cape Island (now Cape May City) was advertised in the late 1700s as a popular, healthy place for sea bathing, the barrier islands remained largely uninhabited until train service from Philadelphia was established in 1863. With thousands of visitors arriving daily by rail during the summer season, the seaside resorts of Ocean City, Sea Isle City, Strathmere, Avalon, Stone Harbor, and the Wildwoods blossomed. Today, tourism is the county's largest industry, as vacationers enjoy both its 30 miles of beaches and the mainland's quaint historic villages.

Book excerpt: The abolitionist John Woolman (1720-72) has been described as a "Quaker saint," an isolated mystic, singular even among a singular people. But as historian Geoffrey Plank recounts, this tailor, hog producer, shopkeeper, schoolteacher, and prominent Quaker minister was very much enmeshed in his local community in colonial New Jersey and was alert as well to events throughout the British Empire. Responding to the situation as he saw it, Woolman developed a comprehensive critique of his fellow Quakers and of the imperial economy, became one of the most emphatic opponents of slaveholding, and helped develop a new form of protest by striving never to spend money in ways that might encourage slavery or other forms of iniquity. Drawing on the diaries of contemporaries, personal correspondence, the minutes of Quaker meetings, business and probate records, pamphlets, and other sources, John Woolman's Path to the Peaceable Kingdom shows that Woolman and his neighbors were far more engaged with the problems of inequality, trade, and warfare than anyone would know just from reading the Quaker's own writings. Although he is famous as an abolitionist, the end of slavery was only part of Woolman's project. Refusing to believe that the pursuit of self-interest could safely guide economic life, Woolman aimed for a miraculous global transformation: a universal disavowal of greed.
