Book excerpt: Madison tossed and turned as the nightmare came to life again. Billy was standing in front of her with his fist coming straight for her face. She threw her arms up but it didn't help. The pain of the impact splintered through her head as she loses her balance. She felt herself fall back on the end table and then to the floor. Her back came alive with the burning pain from the impact. She tried to scream “NO!” but was crying so hard and was so scared that she'd just make him madder. Madison prayed his rampage was over and he would just leave but instead he kicks her in the ribs as she crawls to get away. Madison heard her ribs break. The pain was so sever she thought she'd died. Through the pain and her own cries she could hear Billy yelling. “You will never belong to anyone else. You can't leave me, you'll die first.” Madison was so confused on how someone she had dated for years could change so quickly. It had to be the drugs. She tried to help him but he refused. She knew she had to leave him before their relationship got worse. Madison was forced back to reality with the pain of Billy jerking her up by her hair. Billy yelled something at her but Madison couldn't understand for she was losing consciences. He then threw her to the floor and began kicking her again. She tried to block the kicks with her arms and legs but it hurt too badly. Then he kicked her in the back of the head. She lost conscience as her world went black. The smell of smoke woke her from her black world. The pain ravished her body and she instantly wished she was dead. Madison looked around at flames engulfing the living room. She decided there must be a reason she awoke and that's to live not to die. Even though the pain was more then she could stand she made her way to the bathroom, away from the flames. She waits as long as she could to make sure Billy was gone before she tries to make her escape. After what seamed like forever she painfully made her way out the window.

Book Generous Mistakes

Download or read book Generous Mistakes written by Michael Anesko and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017-02-16 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By combining the techniques of textual criticism and the insights of close reading, Generous Mistakes offers new perspectives not only on two of Henry James's major novels (The Portrait of a Lady and The Ambassadors) but also on the process by which they became the books we know—or think we know. Through a better understanding of the conditions of production that affected James's author function, we achieve a deeper appreciation of the historical contingencies of his artistry. Closely examining new forms of evidence (even fingerprints), Generous Mistakes contends that authorship is a hybrid construction, a sometimes unpredictable sequence of different forms of practice, each of which contributes meaningfully to the texts we read and analyze. Offering a sustained examination of the 'textual condition' of James's work—going beyond the relatively familiar ground of authorial revision—this study brings into sharper focus the complex and sometimes arbitrary factors that contributed to the making of two masterpieces of modern fiction and to the legend of the master who wrote them.

  • Author : Ken Wylie
  • Publisher : Rocky Mountain Books Ltd
  • Release : 2014-10-07
  • ISBN : 1771600284
  • Pages : 336 pages

Download or read book Buried written by Ken Wylie and published by Rocky Mountain Books Ltd. This book was released on 2014-10-07 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On January 20, 2003, at 10:45 a.m., a massive avalanche in the Selkirk Range of British Columbia struck three members of two guided backcountry skiing groups and buried them. After a frantic hour of digging by those still standing, an unthinkable outcome became reality: seven people were dead. The tragedy made international news, splashing photos of the seven dead Canadian and US skiers on television screens and newspaper pages. The official analysis was that guide error was not a contributing factor in the accident. This interpretation was insufficient for some of the victims’ families, the public and some members of the guiding community. Buried is the assistant guide’s story. It renders an answerable truth about what happened by delving deep into the human factors that played into putting people in harm’s way as well as the peace that comes from accountability and the personal growth that results from understanding.

Book The Aesthetics and Politics of Linguistic Borders

Download or read book The Aesthetics and Politics of Linguistic Borders written by Heidi Grönstrand and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-10-18 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection showcases a multivalent approach to the study of literary multilingualism, embodied in contemporary Nordic literature. While previous approaches to literary multilingualism have tended to take a textual or authorship focus, this book advocates for a theoretical perspective which reflects the multiplicity of languages in use in contemporary literature emerging from increased globalization and transnational interaction. Drawing on a multimodal range of examples from contemporary Nordic literature, these eighteen chapters illustrate the ways in which multilingualism is dynamic rather than fixed, resulting from the interactions between authors, texts, and readers as well as between literary and socio-political institutions. The book highlights the processes by which borders are formed within the production, circulation, and reception of literature and in turn, the impact of these borders on issues around cultural, linguistic, and national belonging. Introducing an innovative approach to the study of multilingualism in literature, this collection will be of particular interest to students and researchers in literary studies, cultural studies, and multilingualism.

Book excerpt: Scottish zoologist IVAN TERRANCE SANDERSON (1911-1973) coined the word cryptozoology and first used it in print in this hard-to-find 1961 work, the story of "hairy hominids" across the planet from the very beginnings of human civilization until the mid 20th century. With its scientific, anthropological approach, this is one of the first books to treat the phenomenon of "Bigfoot" seriously, and introduced a groundbreaking classification system for the spectrum of subhumanoids. "I am happy that a whole new generation of cryptozoologists-in-training will be able to read Ivan T. Sanderson's classic book," says cryptozoologist Loren Coleman in his new introduction. "This book opened the minds of many to the vastness of the hominoid reports... and spotlighted for people that Bigfoot/Sasquatch research was the next area for exploration in North America." This new edition, complete with the original illustrations and maps, is part of Cosimo's Loren Coleman Presents series. LOREN COLEMAN is author of numerous books of cryptozoology, including Bigfoot!: The True Story of Apes in America and Mothman and Other Curious Encounters.
