Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Buried Cities and Bible Countries This book contains a description Of some of the most important modern discoveries bearing upon the Bible, the selection being made to meet the wants Of those who have no time to follow the course Of exploration, and no taste for technical details. The preparation of such a volume has often been urged upon me by those who have listened to my lectures on Palestine Exploration. In such a work accuracy is of more value than origin ality and therefore I have not hesitated to gather information from the best sources, and to use it freely. The authorities and sources will be found in a list at the end of each chapter; and thus, while due acknowledgment is made, the reader will know where to go to for further information. In one chapter, indeed - that relating to the topography of Jerusalem in Scripture times - I do venture to state my own views, and give my own map of localities; but it is only because my special study of the subject seems to justify my confidence, and compels me to differ from other writers. I desire to express my special Obligation to the Committee Of the Palestine Exploration Fund for allowing the use of their plates for the illustrations of this volume. Book Buried Cities Recovered Or Explorations in Bible Lands

Download or read book Buried Cities Recovered Or Explorations in Bible Lands written by Frank S. Dehass and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-25 with total page 614 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Buried Cities Recovered, Or, Explorations in Bible Lands: Giving the Results of Recent Researches in the Orient, and Recovery of Many Places in Sacred and Profane History Long Considered Lost; Illustrated With New Maps and Numerous Original Engravings The author's object in accepting an appointment under the United States Government was not the honor or emoluments of office, but a desire to visit the lauds of the Bible, that he might see for himself how far the manners, customs, and traditions of the people and topography of those countries agreed with the inspired word. These sketches were originally written for our own gratification, amid the vivid scenes where the events described occurred; and it is a remarkable fact that nearly all the places mentioned in the Bible where any great event transpired may still be identified by their old Hebrew names in the Arabic form - a most wonderful philological corroboration of the Biblical narrative. Recent explorations in the East have resulted in the recovery of many places in sacred and profane history long regarded as lost; and as the facts brought out by these researches are not accessible to the general reader, the author has compiled them in this concise form, and at the request of numerous friends gives them to the public, not as a scientific work for the antiquarian, but as an humble contribution to Biblical archæology for the home circle, believing that, such a volume will add greatly to the elucidation of the Scriptures, and serve to correct some of the errors which many travellers have fallen into by a too hasty or superficial view of the places visited. Book Historical Illustrations of the Old Testament Classic Reprint

Download or read book Historical Illustrations of the Old Testament Classic Reprint written by G. Rawlinson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-01-08 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historical Illustrations of the Old Testament During the last fifty years, and especially the latter part of this period, we have entered on a new epoch of Biblical knowledge and illustration. Cities that for ages lay buried in ruins have been disinterred. The pyramids have broken their long silence and spoken to us. The Assyrian inscriptions, which go back to the age of the earliest patriarchs, have been read, and have yielded up their hidden mean ing. Papyri, as old as the Hebrew Exodus, by the aid of modern science have been deci phered. Geographical explorations, more or less complete, have been made in all parts of the Holy Land, enabling us to judge of the accuracy with which the sacred writers speak of the relative situation of cities and villages, and of the scenery and agricultural or nomadic adaptations of this singular country, so diver sified in its aspects and characteristics. Book The Cities That Built the Bible

Download or read book The Cities That Built the Bible written by Robert R. Cargill and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2016-03-15 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For many, the names Bethlehem, Babylon, and Jerusalem are known as the setting for epic stories from the Bible featuring rustic mangers, soaring towers, and wooden crosses. What often gets missed is that these cities are far more than just the setting for the Bible and its characters—they were instrumental to the creation of the Bible as we know it today. Robert Cargill, Assistant Professor of Classics and Religious Studies at the University of Iowa, is an archeologist, Bible scholar, and host of numerous television documentaries, such as the History Channel series Bible Secrets Revealed. Taking us behind-the-scenes of the Bible, Cargill blends archaeology, biblical history, and personal journey as he explores these cities and their role in the creation of the Bible. He reveals surprising facts such as what the Bible says about the birth of Jesus and how Mary’s Virgin Birth caused problems for the early church. We’ll also see how the God of the Old Testament was influenced by other deities, that there were numerous non-biblical books written about Moses, Jacob, and Jesus in antiquity, and how far more books were left out of the Bible than were let in during the messy, political canonization process. The Cities That Built the Bible is a magnificent tour through fourteen cities: the Phoenicia cities of Tyre, Sidon, and Byblos, Ugarit, Nineveh, Babylon, Megiddo, Athens, Alexandria, Jerusalem, Qumran, Bethlehem, Nazareth, and Rome. Along the way, Cargill includes photos of artifacts, dig sites, ruins, and relics, taking readers on a far-reaching journey from the Grotto of the Nativity to the battlegrounds of Megiddo, from the towering Acropolis of Athens to the caves in Qumran where the Dead Sea Scrolls were discovered. An exciting adventure through time, The Cities That Built the Bible is a fresh, fascinating exploration that sheds new light on the Bible.
