Book Reducing Burglary

Download or read book Reducing Burglary written by Andromachi Tseloni and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-12-11 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Domestic burglary has fallen significantly over the past 20 years in many countries, but still remains a high volume crime. On top of substantial financial loss and property damage, burglary also leads to high levels of anxiety and fear of crime. The research presented in this book represents the first systematic study of what actually works in security interventions against burglary, with cross-sectional data on different regions and socio-economic population groups. This work provides an overview of the scope of the problem and what can be done about it, drawing on extensive research evidence from projects funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) Secondary Data Analysis Initiative (SDAI), and other sources. It reports detailed findings about which interventions are most effective for different population groups and how these measures can be implemented. It includes burglary prevention advice for homeowners, law enforcement and other public agencies, and makes recommendations for future research. In addition to being relevant to concerned citizens, police, policy-makers and crime prevention practitioners, this book will also be of interest to researchers in criminology and criminal justice, particularly those working on security and crime prevention, as well as urban planning and public policy.

Book excerpt: Winner of the ASC Distinguished Book Award for International Research! 'Beautifully written and superbly conceived, with illustrations and examples that combine theory and practice across a range of disciplines, Cultural Criminology should be read by anyone – academics and smart readers alike – interested in crime, media, culture and social theory. Bravo to Ferrell, Hayward and Young on a tour de force that is at once cool and classic! Cultural Criminology will influence the field for a very long time to come.' - Professor Lynn Chancer, Hunter College, CUNY, USA `This is not just a book on the present state and possible prospects of our understanding of crime, criminals and our responses to both. However greatly criminologists might benefit from the authors' illuminating insights and the new cognitive vistas their investigations have opened, the impact of this book may well stretch far beyond the realm of criminology proper and mark a watershed in the progress of social study as such.' - Zygmunt Bauman, Emeritus Professor, University of Leeds, UK `Cultural Criminology offers a fresh new perspective on both criminality and criminal justice. It outlines the cultural hegemony of the powerful while also documenting the growing resistance to mindless criminalization and mass incarceration. Artfully written, the authors also document the work of those consciously creating a new political space to challenge the increasingly global, security society that seems inextricably tied up with late capitalism.' - Meda Chesney-Lind, University of Hawaii at Manoa `Creative, challenging and controversial: a manifesto for mean times' - Tony Jefferson, Visiting Presidential Scholar, John Jay College of Criminal Justice, USA Here is the definitive book on cultural criminology. Lively, innovative, engaging and accessible, Cultural Criminology draws together the work of three of the leading international figures in the field today. The book traces the history, current configuration, methodological innovations and future trajectories of cultural criminology, mapping its terrain for students and academics interested in this exciting field. The book highlights and analyses issues of representation, meaning and politics in relation to crime and criminal justice, covering areas such as: - Crime and the media - Everyday life and everyday transgression - Popular culture - Consumerism - Globalisation - Social control The use of vignettes, case studies and visual material throughout the text brings the subject to life. Cultural Criminology is indispensable to students, lecturers and researchers in criminology, sociology, cultural studies and media studies. Jeff Ferrell is Professor of Criminal Justice at Texas Christian University and Visiting Professor at the University of Kent. Keith Hayward is Director of Studies for Criminology/ Senior Lecturer in Criminology at the University of Kent. Book A Catalogue of Details on Pre Contract Schedules

Download or read book A Catalogue of Details on Pre Contract Schedules written by Edward Ayebeng Botchway and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2013-09-04 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There was the need to expand the eye centre at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), Kumasi. KATH requested for a design proposal for an eye centre of excellence to adequately cater for the growing needs of patients requiring ophthalmic care. It was to be sighted within KATHs premises, adjacent to the new Accident and Emergency Centre (A&E). Essentially, the idea was to provide a state-of-the-art facility that would accommodate all functions of the OPD eye clinic as well as provide surgical and in-patient services. While responding to the issues of context, the facility was to employ the most efficient and cost-effective methods of construction. In that regard, the massing and form had to sit harmoniously with its surrounding environment. Our consultancy firm brought on board all its expertise to bear on the realization of the scheme. In terms of the architectural theme, the ball had been set rolling. A terrific precedence had been set in the A&E block, which happens to be on the adjoining site. A parking lot had also been created to separate the two buildings. Such antecedence was inspirational, as it was challenging, in that it evoked some exciting ideas and thoughts with respect to the design solution vis-a-vis a limited budget and restricted site. Eventually, an evocative design was conceivedan intrepid and a very audacious piece of architecture, given the budget, proved very satisfactory to our clients, stakeholders, and target group. This book, which is the first of a series of three volumes of books, tells a visual story of how the noble vision of KATH was born. It is my hope that this book will inspire the reader, through the ideas and details presented, to find the design and construction process enjoyable.
