Download or read book Becoming an Invitational Leader written by William Purkey and published by Humanix Books. This book was released on 2003-10-25 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: William Purkey and Betty Siegel have written much more than a guidebook to becoming a healthier and more effective leader. The book is radical and profound in its compelling argument that it is time for people in positions of authority to forge a new kind of relationship with others based on dialogue, respect and collaboration. What separates this text from others in its field and makes for such interesting and enjoyable reading are the countless quotes, metaphors and specific examples of highly successful leaders who have practiced invitational leadership. John Dewey, Thomas Jefferson, F.W. Woolworth are just a few leaders mentioned who held a strong belief in the importance of respect in all human interaction as well as faith in the self-directing powers of the individual. This insightful text is long overdue in an age of "might makes right" and contains great wisdom in promoting solid values found in various democratic and spiritual organizations. Supervisors and coaches, CEO's and shop stewards, managers and parents, anyone and everyone who deals with others, take notice. This is a truly inspirational book in its invitation for all people to join together in a shared vision of promise and greatness.

Download or read book In Other Words Leadership written by Shannon A. Mullen and published by Steerforth. This book was released on 2023-06-20 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A remarkable story of work, worry, art, faith, community, life, and hope. An instant classic.” — Heather Cox Richardson "A heartfelt and moving story . . . Just as important, it’s also a well-timed lesson in civics." — Richard Russo, author of Empire Falls Two unforgettable women from opposite poles of power in Maine forge an uplifting bond through good, old-fashioned letter writing that helps them navigate the COVID crisis Both women bring civility, grace, wit, and wisdom to the challenge of protecting those who depend on them — in other words, leadership This trip to the “Vacationland” of Maine — where the state motto is I Lead — offers an inspiring tale of civility and purpose, of doing the right thing and not just surviving, but prevailing. The first woman to serve as governor of Maine, Janet Mills, had been in office a year when COVID-19 reached the United States. The recently-widowed 72-year-old wrote in her journal there is “no playbook for a pandemic” as she imposed unprecedented restrictions on her state. When early support for the governor’s response curdled to rampant opposition, a young mother named Ashirah Knapp sent a letter of support from a remote homestead in the woods of Maine. Ashirah’s handwritten dispatch detailed how the public health emergency was upending her family’s life and livelihood, and she promised to keep writing “every week until we are through this time” to remind the governor how many Mainers supported her despite the disruption. Ashirah’s letters, with their simple wisdom and striking penmanship, stood out in a flood of correspondence Governor Mills was receiving that ranged in tone from appreciative to furious. They helped keep her grounded as she made wrenching, often unpopular choices. Shannon A. Mullen weaves from these two women’s letters and the governor’s journal, which were never intended for publication, an intimate and compelling true story that is a celebration of civility and compassion in the face of rancor and of resolve in the face of adversity.
Download or read book The Leadership Trifecta written by Joseph Welock and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2022-12-01 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: America is a spiritual battlefield. We are up against a powerful enemy. As Christians, we are constantly under attack, and it is of paramount importance that each of us learn how to battle this determined and capable adversary. What is at stake, you ask? The lives of our children, our families, our nation. Satan's number one goal is to keep all non-Christians from accepting the truth of Jesus Christ. He is a relentless warrior, and he is constantly on the prowl for those he can destroy. Throughout my life experiences, I have come to identify many parallels between the military, the parables in the Bible, and the athletic gridiron. All three are battlefields in their own right, and all three provide examples that can help us succeed in spiritual battle. Our personal legacy hangs on the decisions we make every day. But more importantly, the number of souls that end up in heaven depends on how we live our lives and the example that we set. To put it in military terms, it is time for Christians to "stand in the gap." We must be the ones who rise up and run toward the battle. We must be prepared and poised to react and respond when we identify a spiritual assault. No matter what mission we are tasked with, we must be the few, the proud, the elite warriors that will fearlessly sprint toward the chaos that has infiltrated our society. I have incorporated stories, event, and life lessons that stem from my personal life, my experiences as a US Marine, as well as my twenty-two-year coaching career. I looked to connect them to biblical teachings. My goal was to create an "essential knowledge blueprint" so that readers could refer to and draw from when they identify a spiritual attack. I want to help Christian leaders prepare for the battle, counterattack, and be the victor that I know you can be. I challenge you, as a Christian leader, to be courageous. Make the tough decision to lead every day. We are all imperfect. We are all sinners. But with God's, help we can be victors! The time is now. Be bold, step up, and be the leader that God knows you can be.
Download or read book Leaders and Leadership written by Lee Thayer and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2010-09-22 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the West, and in America particularly, we have deep-seated beliefs in 1. Evolution the idea that all things are constantly evolving in the right direction; 2. Progress the idea that whatever is newer is better, whether it is a theory or a technological tool; and 3. Consensus the idea that the more people who adopt a new idea or a new fashion in clothes or cars, the greater the likelihood that they are right. So we go from a new fashion to the next new fashion. We believe that change is progress. And we have faith that the changes over which we have no control are taking us where we ought to be going since evolving is inevitable. These are beliefs that structure the core of our thoughts and our lives. These are beliefs that lead us to see the world as linear and literal. Most of the longest-running civilizations of the past native American Indian, for example were cyclical. Every generation was expected to reprise and replicate the preceding generation, with only minor changes in execution. Those people were for thousands of years truth-keepers, carefully guarding the truths that had been passed down to them from the past. By contrast, we are truth-seekers, forever inventing newer truths in order to render the existing ones obsolete. As a result, we look for the wisdom for living and for running our organizations in the most recent emanations from our gurus and experts. In doing so, we miss the wisdom of the ages. This book attempts to redress that fl aw in our thinking. Lee Thayer shows us in this book how to fi nd the wisdom that could make a real difference in our lives and our businesses. Few would be more qualifi ed to do so.
Download or read book Leadership and Legacy written by Tom Lansford and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2021-02-01 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historic, intriguing, and important in so many ways, the Obama presidency will be studied by scholars and students for years to come. With the rise in hyperpartisanship, legislative gridlock, political dysfunction, "fake news," and other negative trends, it is imperative that academicians weigh in with a rigorous assessment of Obama's presidency. This volume applies a variety of scholarly approaches to analyze the impact of Obama as a leader and policymaker. Scholars from disciplines such as political science, history, environmental science, economics, and communication come together to provide an interdisciplinary and wide-ranging appraisal of the president. Across the varied chapters, Obama's leadership is central to understanding the success or failure of his policies and initiatives. The president's decisions and actions are also assessed against the constraints and possibilities created by the modern US political system, rapid changes in technology and society, and shifting patterns in international relations. The result is a book that covers executive leadership, administration, domestic issues, foreign and national security policy, and more, to present a comprehensive review of the Obama legacy.
